Super Strength - is Hand Clap worth taking?
For the power? NO. a big huge no. If there is someone worse then others in the team doing knockback, its doing knockback yourself. The thug (MM) version btw has changed into a knockdown, although i love to see this also for the SS set its unlikely.
Stun sets are not that great afaik, In that case you rather can pick a 'random' power that can be better used for IO sets, like hover (def sets are always nice) or even aidother (healset).

Handclap is pretty low on many peoples lists but perhaps not to those Shield/SS tankers who are only wearing torn purple pants, are green all over and carrying a manhole cover.

Do you have Stealth yet? Stimulant? Jump Kick? Group Fly? Whirlwind? Is there a travel power pool you aren't in yet? Whichever of Swift or Hurdle you didn't take?
All of those would be more useful than Hand Clap.

I see the Hand Clap supports are late sleepers and have not assaulted this thread yet
It has uses and in the right hands can be a very valuable tool. It will give you a bit of breathing room, stun, and acts as a nice secondary taunt.
All that being said I found it was redundant once I took Foot Stomp. It is a relyable knockdown with damage and a great aggro management utility. The only real benefit offered by Hand Clap over Foot Stomp is the stun. If we could slot for -kb it may be useful but to most the stun is not worth scattering the mobs.
I would only slot it if you were looking for a place to put IO's for set bonuses.
So, I'm currently 37th level on my SD/SS tanker, and I'm looking at how many more powers I will be able to take. I know I'm going to take One With The Shield, and I know I'm going to take Foot Stomp (and not take Hurl), and I want to pick up the Fighting power pool for Tough and Weave, but that will require taking Boxing or Kick as well.
That would eat up all five of my remaining powers. However, I could respec and not take Jab at all, giving me one more power slot. So, the question is, is Hand Clap worth taking? According to the paragonwiki site, it can't take PBAOE sets, and the stun sets seem a bit less then stellar.... Basically, I'm looking for your views on the matter, sort of a second opinion. |
In my opinion ... don't bother.
P.S. - You can't respec out of Jab as its your default secondary power.
if handclap was changed to a knockdown, I'd like it on my ss/da brute
Spines/ D A lvl 50 Scrap, stone/wm lvl 50 tank, Kat/reg lvl 50 Scrap
Grav/Kin lvl 50 Cont, Fire/Enegry lvl 50 Blast
Warshade lvl 50, PB lvl 39, nightwidow lvl 50, crab lvl 42
plant/thorns lvl 50 dom, ice/fire lvl 40 dom, grav/nrg lvl 41 dom
Knockdown in Hand Clap would make it a bit more useful. Could also use a bit of spicing up in terms of animation and effect.
Then again, that would make SS/SD a monster in terms of mitigation. Shield Charge, Hand Clap, Foot Stomp timed right could take large groups out of the game very quickly. Stack in Energy Torrent epic and some global recharge and it would be deadly...fun but deadly.

If Hand Clap did knockdown rather than knockback, at least for even con foes and higher, it probably would be worth a look. After all, nobody who takes Stone Melee should skip Fault.
It may be of some use for DA/SS tankers who will benefit from stackable stuns. For WP/SS tankers, Hand Clap is pure poison. For other tanker primaries, it is simply useless.

I'm forgainst it.
srlsy tho, I haven't picked it up yet. With all this negatively towards Handclap it makes me want it even more!
hmm..maybe put some proc's in it..does it take taunt or kb io's? must investigate...
perma jump is ---> /up 1
we really need -kb IOs to change handclap into a weak footstomp

And I think it should be done.

Onto toe-pick. Green man want to clap hands strong. Green man wants pow to lots of bad men, but friends get mad when Green man goes pow with hands. Green man not have many friends. Green man stop clapping hands. Green man stomp instead. Stomping fun.

I like handclap as it is. Especially when Unstoppable starts blinking and I hit conserve power before it drops, and then it drops and I handclap and start turning on toggles and DP to recover.
If you're willing to control the knockback, it will be situationally useful to you, though it may still bother teammates.
Other than that, it's good for bowling
Hand Clap is a fun power with a great Super Strength "feel" to it, but of limited actual use during combat. The fun factor is very important to me, so I like to squeeze it in eventually. Your mileage may vary.
At one point I would have defended Hand Clap, but not so much anymore.
The reason Hand Clap, a power that has historically received much more flak than the ancillary powers that were almost replaced in I13, remains unchanged is because its presence arguably "balances" the power set. I personally do not see missing a viable mid-tier power option as a legitimate balancing tool for a power set. But then, Super Strength has been under fire more than once in the past so I should be grateful no one is tinkering with the set at all.

Now soloing: GM-Class enemy Adamaster, with a Tanker!
Handclap is not quite as big of a floating turd as Conserve Power on a melee was, but its pretty close. Now, change it to KD instead of KB and I would consider it a requirement to have for a Tanker.
