/rad universally good?

I've been reading the many positive opinions on /radiation controllers, and the major discussion of whether illusion or fire control is the better primary for damage, but generally, does radiation pretty much work with any primary? For instance gravity/radiation sounds quite fun to me. Waddya think?

It is the best overall debuff set, so yes, it goes with pretty much anything. /rad is one of the better pairings for Grav.

Rad works with EVERYTHING

Fire and Ill are the best (and, if you want a completly proced out Ice/) because with Fire and Ice you have to stay in melee (Hot Feet and Artic Air) and can get the benefit of Chocking Cloud. For Ill it's because PA cannot be buffed and the -res that you provide with EF add a portion of dmg that will'not get healed back

Anyway, just do the primarie that you like, Rad just will make it awesome xD

Since i3 Rad has always been one of my favourite sets. Really no longer like my ill/rad any more especially with reference to damage but I guess that may just be my own opinion. For me PA used to contribute quite a bit to damage and as rad debuffs instead of buffs I guess it goes well together. But rad goes well with anything.

Much has probably changed but isnt fire/kin still the way to go for damage?

Radiation is the most flexible secondary for any primary. It works well with any primary. In most cases, it is the best or second best secondary for each of the primaries. Rad is also very "stackable;" the more Rads you have on a team the better the team will be.

Fire/Kin does more damage in upper levels, but Fire/Rad is safer and does plenty of damage. And if you have multiple Fire/Rads, they will go faster than a team of Fire/Kins. (The Statesman's TF speed record was set by a team of 8 Fire/Rads.) Why? The combo of Hot Feet+Choking Cloud stacked from multiple players is pretty much instant control of any group, without having to wait for recharge. Then stacked AM gives you constant buffs to Damage, Endurance, run speed, recharge and other stuff. A team of Fire/Rads can, if they stick together, pretty much run through any mission knowing that everything short of an AV will die in seconds. And then they have all those stacked debuffs to turn AV's into kittens.

I have also run on teams of Ill/Rads -- almost as fast. Pretty much any primary + Rad can make a superteam.

If you want details on the Rad powers, take a look at my Ill/Rad guide, linked in my sig.

For sheer damage numbers, then yes.

Better pairings you say? Anyone know the best secondary for Grav?

I won't say they are better pairings, but /rad, /ta, and /storm will all be ideal pairings for Grav.

I'd imagine that Trick Arrow would pair wonderfully with Gravity also. I just took an Illusion/TA to 50 over the dbl xp weekend, and I dearly LOVE LOVE LOVE how TA fills in a lot of gaps in the Illusion set.

I can only think it would help with Gravity's control gaps too.

Think of rad like the potato. Normal lunch nothing fancy: french fries. Nice dinner steak and baked potato. In the mood for Italian: gnocchi. Breakfast: hash browns. Downhome good: fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. Comfort food: pot roast with carrots and potatoes. A nice hearty winter dinner: Scalloped potatoes. Hop over the pond: Shepherds Pie.

It's the all around set that just makes everything a little better but it doesn't bind you into just one type of "dinner". With rad you have choices.

One thing i didn't see mentioned was rad's ability to compliment any controller primary through the recharge reduction granted by accel metab. Accel metab makes perma-ing hasten worlds easier. Accel metab is also a damage buff for you and your primary pet (excluding PA of course).

More recharge = those long cooldowns coming up faster which is nice for pretty much any controller primary.

I read this board and have been interested in rolling up a new controller. It seems with the forum switch the guides have lost their links

I picked Earth for my primary as I was on a TF recently with one, and the visuals and sound effects were great! I am loving the sound effects on my own PC as it sounds like the constant rumbling of the earth. Seems like a very fun set. (Any advice?)

Rad? Wow. Like really, wow. My last troller was a /kin and I thought that was something, but this Rad appears to be fantastic. I am really looking forward to picking up some uniques for slotting. Could you fellow Rads tell me about slotting a Regen Tissue in Radiant Aura? What about a Miracle? Is this going to effect myself and the party??

Here's a working link to Local_Man's Earth/Rad guide.

It would only affect yourself. Put those uniques in Health instead, that way you get the bonus all the time without having to click anything.

I

Gravity is in my opinion the weakest control primary and in serious need of a buff - having said that it is also one of the quirkiest and fun.
I've tried a number of Grav Controllers and found that /Rad and /Storm work best.

Storm gives you much needed additional control and AoE debuff
Rad gives better pseudo holds in immob and debuffs.
Having debuffs be it via anchors or AoE plays to the ability of Wormhole to relocate mobs.

Take a look at my Earth/Rad guide. The link in my sig works.

Do not put the heal uniques from Numina, Miracle or Regen Tissue in Radiant Aura -- they will only work for 2 minutes on yourself only after you use the power. Those need to go in Health.

EDIT: Oops, hilker beat me to it.

Also the tier 9 power in rad is another AOE hold. My plant/rad really goes to town on hard control, with seeds, plant's aoe hold, and rads EM pulse.

They would only affect you, and would only be "on" for a limited time after using the heal power. It is better to slot them in a passive like health so they are always on.

Sorry for the minor derailment however is there a time associated to this record STF?

Back OT, Rad is my most favourite set, like others have said it's so versatile, it has;

1 great, easy to use, buff
1 auto-hit heal, weak but spam able if you so desire
3 awesome debuffs, 2 of which are auto-hit toggles
a rez and a 3 of late powers that you don't have to take if you don't want. Which to me sums up the set - 'blossoms early and is fun all the way'.

Rad – It’s full of win!

I don't recall the number. It was a while ago, when the Stateman TF was all the rage and before Cimmeroa. Someone on the boards issued a challenge, and a bunch of people tried it, with the full team of experienced Fire/Rads getting the best time. For some reason, I think it was well under 30 min. I also think there have been some changes to the STF since then, and some of the tricks they used no longer work.

But, the point of the comment was to say that FRad teams are arguably the fastest in the game.

Totally agree - just wondered if our 27:09 on Defiant was beaten?

I'm thinking it was something like 23 or 24 minutes, but I'm not sure. Call Me Awesome may remember better than I do . . . (As one gets older, the memory is the first to go . . .)

Yours is a pretty amazing time, though. Was it a team of Fire/Rads? Or some other combination? I could see something like 7 Fire/Rads and a Stone Tank to hold the aggro.
