Useropts?

Are there any commands users can use, for example adding to to a text file in the game file directory, which would give greater control over the appearance/setup of the game on the client side?

Other MMO's have the ability to enter a commands which would disable any intro movies or remove certain visual (non-interactive) elements or even allow a powerful PC to exceed the settings (view distance etc..) available from the client options.

Does CoX have anything like that? I have a fairly decent PC although it' getting old now but I find that CoX's initial loading times are extremely long compared to other MMO's I've played and am wondering if there is any way to speed it up so the login screen doesn't take so long to load up.

Once again I apologise if there is already a thread on this elsewhere, I did do a search.. honestly!

Don't think you can do much about the loading screen. The loading is directly conntected to your internett line/connection speed, and not the game as such.

You might want to invest in more ram, but seeing that you say your PC is getting old, a new PC might of do the trick... Oh and check with your ISP, and see what kind of subscription plan they reccommend for playing MMO games....

As for / commands, I have no idea, and I can't remember having read about it in the forums either, but who knows, there might be some commands you can use, but you would be better off asking tech support about those kind of things, since they should know (theroretically at least ) ... Good luck

Actually it's probably my processor. I'm still running on a single core 2Ghz. I could upgrade my RAM but it's an old MB with only two slots I have 2Gb already, I could go for 4Gb but doesn't XP cap it at 3?

My ISP is Plus.net which prioritises online game traffic and they've got the specs for CoX and I'm connected at 5Mb.

Perhaps I've just been spoilt by other MMO's who's design doen't mean a lot of loading right at the start.
I guess what I'd really like to see is a progress bar when it's loading!

Oh well thanks for the response.

XP (32 bit) can handle 4 Gb but if you have a 256 Kb graphics card, then its address space is taken from XP's memory address space...
<----><----><----><----> 4 Gb (4096 Kb)
<----><----><----><---> 4 Gb less 256 Kb (3840 Kb)

Most of the other settings are accessed from ingame...
Menu - Options - Graphic Options - Advanced (button)

For users with multicore CPU's changing the shortcut target to include -renderthread 1 should activate CoX multithreaded mode.

Ah, I believe my nVidia 7900GS is a 512mb card so going by that it's probably why I can't get more than 3Gb.

Thanks for the info!

i found my motherboard was limited to 3g memory. so you could be restricted by that even if xp is playing nice.

Err .. sorry .. that's completely incorrect.

XP 32 bit can take up to 4 gigs. However, windows will reserve most of the space over 3 gigs for it's own use, so you will only see just over three gigs available. Windows 32 bit does not have a PAE equivalent kernel, so it *cannot* handle anything greater than that.

Additionally ( and ignoring the fact that you have kb and mb slightly mixed up ), windows only devotes local ram to the graphics card if it's onboard. Expansion graphics cards have their own ram. You do not lose 512 MB of system ram by having a 512 MB graphics card.

Windows does not need to assign 512 MB of memory space to it.

Just wanted to clarify that before erroneous information started being taken as gospel

Ha, oh well I've never been technical minded anyway. I think that both parts of the original question have pretty much been answered, I'm sure I can put up with a long loading time (might stick the kettle on for a brew while waiting) and I'll mess about with the IG settings.

A new PC is out of the question at the moment as I intend on buying a laptop soon for when I'm working in the Falklands, no online games for 4 months

Bizarely, the loading times are much quicker under Linux, but I wouldn't recommend that for the faint hearted

Thanks, tempted by Fallout but I have quite a few offline games to keep me occupied too. Just need to find the files needed so I don't need to take the discs with me.

I don't mean to be a killjoy but I seen Fallout I,II the other day in the market. Is it allowed to permit access to this stuff? Just a curiousity twitch.

EDIT: Fallout 3 just got news of further 2 DLC btw for fans.

Sorry, I don't know what you mean? What do you mean "Is it permitted"?

Gog.com is a proper licensed reseller of old game, it's not a pirate site or anything if that's what you mean.

It really is a pitty but as far as i knew the Useropts file on mxo was a one of a kind thing, and definitely something that is widely used. (probably due to the possibility of exploiting or generally not many people would be interested. There only one one or two pps that properly fiddled excluding the rare)

I do wish COH had something like it perhaps giving examples and showing them how it was achieved and posting on the suggestions would encourage something

No worries. It's a lovely little site and a good example of what developers & publishers could be doing with their old IP.

Now I wish they'd hurry up and get Grim Fandango on there

Love to see those old games still selling. Be nice if they went back even further. Still trying to get hold of a copy of the original Dungeon Master and Elite (played them on my Atari ST) that actually work on a modern windozy PC. Elite was a long drawn out slog without those cheats though...and who on earth was Sara?

I'd like to see both Crusader games available with XP/Vista compatibility. Had the boxed versions a long time ago, lost them over time

Must admit thought had been patched in long since so it works automagically now...

And which .exe do I add that to? Currently use:

CityOfHeroes.exe -project "eucoh"

Can I just append it onto that?
