Ok let's be totally serious here for a moment:
CoX cannot be the only MMO to have reached 5years old... so what kind of things have other games done for such a landmark?
And did they even publicise it?
Thelonious Monk
CoX totally needs its own virtual band, to perform in Pocket D and other more frequented zones.
I bet that the official 5th anniversary celebration will be keeping the servers up for 24 hrs without an unexpected middle-of-the-European-day downtime.
Or should that be saved for a real biggy, like the 10th anniversary??

the WoW 5th anniversery celebrations weren't much...infact by and large they were quite small.
You got an account shareable non-combat pet, a baby polar bear (upt for a company named Blizzard really) and got a special achievement oh and level 80 elite Tauren chief would turn up outside a major neutral city and play 'power of the horde' every hour or so.
Still part of me thinks even something like that would be a bit a much for CoX.

How can WoW have had it's 5th anniversary already, when CoH launched before WoW did?
WoW - 23/11/2004
CoH - 28/04/2004
@FloatingFatMan
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
It does have it's own virtual Band, the Banished Pantheon Blues Buskers...they preform in Pocket D every now and again (and yes I totally made that name up).

Guild Wars celebrate events from their lore, I admire that. I'd love something alongside that, even if it's just on the small-scale, such as family raiding a police station; praetorians getting through to 'Portal Corps'; clockwork attacks on power stations; arachnos fighting longbow, etc.
I can't even remember the last proper 'Rikti' event or any.. Mind you, the funny thing is the latter game provides weekend-bonuses, which I love and they are not even excessive, that'd be nice. I'm in suggestion mode, pardon me.

It would be nice to have events like signature heroes/villains turning up in various zones causing all sorts of havoc.
AV/Hero take down anyone?
Ah it was the 4th anniversery WoW celebrated but still you got a cute non-combat pet and an achievement, not exactly an amazing thing with regards the anniversery but it was atleast something.

I would settle for them using the time between now and the 28th to reflect on what impact the MA release has had on the game and the community.
Then work out how to fix all the exploits/bugs/probelms and make it happen with the minimum continued disruption to the players.
Perhaps with the remaining time after they have managed this they can make an action plan to help avoid a repetition in the future.
Sorry for the rant, feeling more than a little out of sorts due to yet another disrupted day on COH.

The Tiki Lounge Act don't so much perform as stand around kicking their heels. Always thought that was a massive missed opportunity, If they did a song and dance number that really would be worth checking out when broadcast on the channels.
The Tiki Room's Banished Pantheon "dance" act appears to be influenced by punk band the Ramones, with two members having directly identical names (Johnny and Joey: they were the only two original members who stayed with the band until their retirement in 1996). A popular comic reference to Joey Ramone's visage was that he looked like a zombie, and it is probable that the Banished Pantheon are used to reiterate this joke.

Not to be cynical, but that would be an incredible day if for an anniversary, we got booted for patching.
That is they were patching to upload the anniversary gifts hehe...

With regard to planned events for 28th.
I have a hunch the devs have thier own in game event planned, and are trying very hard to keep it secret.
It could cause disruption.

Who wants to lay bets on a Rikti Invasion complete with motherships?
Or a 5th Column invasion complete with giant zeppelin's?

How much do you want to bet on an all star, star spangled party, all comers welcome, with maybe a surprise attack at the end. Just come to Pocket D on Freedom.

Well they could change the records in Pocket D - old skool trance is a bit, um, old now...
My own music tastes are probably best not inflicted upon the World, although I quite like the 'restaurant' music in Faultline (near Mirror Spirit).
Perhaps some different songs - on the music setting and not sound effects - could be implemented.
Okay that's me sidetracking a fair bit.
Fascists riding Dinosaurs with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads.
Surely everyone knows it'll be a 5th Column invasion/resurface? If there's a new TF then hurrah, if it's co-op then 'meh' but if there are TWO new TFs (one red, one blue) plus, oh I don't know, a few more promises delivered on rather than 'coming soon' then it's multiple joygasm time for me.

Maybe they'll re-run I3's event in reverse and we'll get 5th Column soldiers booting the Council out of the City/Isles for a day...
Yeah you're probably getting cynical in your old age - I know I am, but then I was a cynical youngster too
I would find giant zeppelins in the sky very cool though...

Five years ago a trumpet call rung out for heroes...
From around the globe that call was answered and the streets, rooftops, and skies of Paragon City were filled with the widest variety of costumed crusaders ever seen. These stalwart players brought with them the courage, fellowship, and dedication that made Paragon once again a true City of Heroes®!
Since that fateful day much has changed. Enemies have fallen and new ones have risen in their place, proving that evil never sleeps. Threats came from alternate dimensions, mystical realms, other times, and even from our own world itself. Lord Recluse loosed an army of villains into the world, turning the Rogue Isles into the largest den of villainy in recorded history. His destined ones showed remarkable will, cunning, and determination in this City of Villains®. Heroes and villains came into direct conflict with PvP battles, uncovered new powers, found new worlds to explore...or conquer, broke through with new inventions, and flashed back through time. The most recent development has provided the tools for players to architect all new adventures and help take us into the future.
Now it is a time to celebrate all the triumphs of the last five years and so Paragon Studios has cooked up some special gifts for all our loyal fans.
Please join us for a month of celebration starting on our birthday, April 28th and continuing on throughout the month of May!
In-Game Events
We're not going to ruin the surprise...but suffice it to say that all CHAOS is going to break loose in-game on our anniversary date and you're not going to want to miss it! From 11am EST on April 28th to 12am EST, get ready to re-experience some of the things that have made City of Heroes® the great game that it is over the past five years! The festivities will be more fun than you can shake a stick at, and will include plenty of opportunities to earn merits, badges and XP.
But that's not all...
Some familiar faces will be hanging out on the Training Room Test Server throughout the day--ready to wish you a happy anniversary. They could be anywhere, but you're definitely going to want to check out Pocket D! So copy a character over and pay them a visit!
Don't know how to get on the Training Room? Learn here.
Global Anniversary Address From Positron
Also on our anniversary day, be watching around 8pm EST in-game (and shortly thereafter on the website), for a special Anniversary Address from everyone's favorite Lead Designer, Positron. He will certainly have some fun information to share!
Anniversary Contests!
For your participating pleasure, we've got two fun contests with cool prizes that will be launching on April 28th and continuing throughout the month of May!
Details will magically appear on the website on our anniversary day, but until then, just start thinking about what masterpieces you might create for the following competitions:
5 Year Anniversary T-Shirt Logo Contest - where the winning entry *may* very well get turned into actual shirts produced for a limited run!
City of Heroes® Video Homage Contest--That's right. We're going to challenge you to be as creative as possible and video tape yourself (alone or with friends and loved ones), paying homage to City of Heroes (in whatever way strikes your fancy), in two minutes or less! Then, you'll postal mail your video to us on CD or DVD and viola-- you'll be entered. Will you write an original song about the game and perform it for us? Perhaps you'll execute an interpretative dance in costume? The sky is the limit so get those creative juices flowing and watch for the specifics coming soon!
It's A Re-activation Week!
We want everyone to benefit from our anniversary, so from April 28th until 11:59pm EST on Sunday, May 3rd, all expired retail and trial accounts that are in good standing will be able to access the live servers. Now is the time to encourage everyone you know to patch up and jump into the game so that they can experience with you our anniversary events, the new Mission Architect system and more!
5 Year Anniversary Badge
Now then...it just wouldn't be a City of Heroes® milestone event without a commemorative badge, would it?
Beginning at 11am EST on Wednesday, April 29th and continuing until 11:59pm EST on Sunday, May 31st, we will be issuing each individual character you log into the game with, the following 5 Year Anniversary badge:
Just a reminder - this badge will be awarded per character, not per account!
All the fun all begins on the 28th and we can't wait for you to join us!
Thanks to you all for making City of Heroes® the success that it is.
Happy Anniversary!
