Quick question, cold/sonic
Shout will definitly be of most consistant use. The question is, is it worth it the longish animation and shorter range? I find Shriek->Scream->Shriek->Scream->Nemesis Staff to be a quite reliable attack chain for a defender. It's boring, no doubt about it, but it's also effective both debuff and damage wise.
In short, if you must pick between those two powers grab the nuke. At least it's fun. Extra fun if PBU+Nuke.
@False Fiction - Virtue / Defiant
Current projects - [Glaciologist - Ill/Cold Troller] [Cloudshaper - Storm/Dark Def] [Harald Wartooth - Elec/Psi Domi]
The range isn't bad. The Fire Breath animation though... The debuff lasts longer than Shriek's or Scream's, though.
On the other hand, the nuke turns everything to paste - including things it doesn't kill, because they'll be ResDebuffed like crazy. The animation is also extremely fast, and the damage/stun hit at the beginning of said animation - the stun being particularly useful for getting away alive after nuking, should it fail to kill something.
As an added bit of fun, the nuke does damage in ticks, so the ResDebuff from the nuke actually affects itself after the first tick (similar to Scream, a lovely quirk of DoTs and ResDebuffs).
Can't you get both? Shout is nice in a chain after the first two and the idea of Sleet > Howl > Nuke sounds rather nice too.
If I had to choose I'd probably go for Shout overall but I'd be pining for the nuke for fun value.
Only got space for one of those two. I have the nuke currently and I find I barely ever use it. By the time I've dropped sleet and heat loss most mobs are usually at a point it would be a waste to use the nuke.
Shout on the other hand would be nice for AV fights.
Cant really decide

Based on your experiences so far, get Shout. The nuke does you no good if it's just sitting there unused.
For AVs I'd say Shout. You'll have a perma debuff of something like 100%+ once you get going (-their resistance resistances since Sleet doesn't have the non-resistable flag).
(Edited because I didn't realise Heat Loss does -Resist too. That's lovely!)
Mmm. Think I'm getting shout then. Now to get my hands on a set of decimation...

Although the nuke looks fun, I think you'll get most of sleet + shout than from the nuke as per what you've mentioned.
Plus bear in mind you need to retoggle everything everytime after nuking, and that's a pain (at least for me... when I remember retoggling after nuking on my blaster)
I think Shout myself, I don't like nukes on Defenders really, cause there's time you have to spend recovering end where you could be doing something. Also over time you'll use Shout much more
Steamy Mist and Snowstorm don't take that much retoggling but it's sudden vulnerability for those seconds

shriek, scream, shriek, electric fences will yield more dps than any of the above options.
Solo yes, but I believe the -res from shout tips the scales in favour of the attack chain with shout. I'm talking about overall DPS from the whole team here, if I do 20 more DPS with electric fences that's nice, but the -res from shout might be close to 100 DPS in the whole team's DPS.
Besides I took psychic mastery to get a cheap purple set (sleep) and I like the look of mind over body

Doesn't one have to wait for 41 levels before getting Electric Fences?
In the 40s I'd also prefer to have Shout for helping to weaken AVs and the like (a Sonics speciality ).
One more question:
Should I take Shriek, Howl and Shout or Shriek, Scream and Shout? Not 100% sure how using Howl in my attack chain would affect my endurance consumption.
At lvl 4 it's either Howl with Posi's Blast (all but Dam/Range) or Shriek with Decimation (all but proc).

Shout is great for PvP, provided the situation is under control so that the rooted time doesn't get you killed. Used last in your attack chain it can really hit high.
Defender nukes are more useful if you have a way to recover quickly (which I assume you do with Heat Loss). Also remember the control aspect...mag 3 disorient for around 15 seconds? Off the top of my head. You can use it for more of an AoE hold than a nuke.

In the end I dropped both the nuke and vengeance to get shout and howl. Had to shuffle some slots around to get them both slotted and this is what I ended up with:

The build looks fun :-D One other thing -
Ragnarok's Chance for Knockdown proc works nicely in Howl (it kinda does what Shockwave should have). It's not too expensive either.

Quaver: Kinetics/Sonic Defender
Semiquaver: Sonic/Kinetics Corruptor
That proc sounds interesting and I might use that but there are 2 reasons for why I dont:
1) I really, really dont have any more slots to pinch. Getting those 4 for howl was an absolute miracle
2) Sleet already does quite good knockdown.
Good idea though, I'll keep that in mind for some other toons.

I would suggest replacing the Posi blast damage/endurance with the proc, if you wanted to try it. Howl doesn't do great damage no matter how you slot it, I think of it more as a spammable cone debuff.
But yes, Sleet does it better I guess. It's always nice when the proc fires when you REALLY need it though!

I could do that... I just dont like the idea of losing a 6.25% recharge bonus

Ah, yeah that would be a shame.. Ah well, just be happy you have Sleet...I went Kinetics, so the proc in Howl is basically my lifeline if I exemp :P

Hehe I see your point.
I never play the character outside teams anyway so aggro is not usually a problem. With the amount of -res, -def, slow and -rech I can put out enemies are usually taking quite a lot of damage and not dishing it out too much.

Sounds fun, I must resist the urge to make yet another /sonic Defender :P hope to see your toon sometime, is it on Defiant?

Union, like all of my toons
Now, all I need to do is a respec and buy a set of Posi's blast.

As a cold/sonic defender, should I take shout or the nuke? Currently I find shriek + scream doesnt quite do the sort of damage I like. The nuke, while it is nice, is quite situational and I'm thinking shout would also be of more consistent use.
Opinions?
