Graphics cards
Do a google search on VGA charts (tom's got a decent one). It totaly boils down to your walletsize and the rest of your system. You can buy a state of the art card, but if the rest of the system is still slow, you wont have much use of it anyway. Dont always go blind on the guides, as they often test it with a state of the art computer or on games that are rather high graphics, while perhaps the games you play can work with way lower cards.
For the GTS, a 260 or 4870 will beat the GTS anytime, anywhere. Between these 2 is nearly 2 generations of videocards, so kinda logic.
I wouldnt put the GTS in SLI, same price you can already get a decent 4870 (512 version) or a setin 260, specialy since the prices will drop soon once again (nvidia comming with their new series). And in SLI they still wont perform even close to a single 260 or 4870 (only can get close to a 9800GTX, but not often).
There are some good price-check websites outthere, depending on the rest of your system a 4870 512 is a great card to have (value for bucks), although the 260 might be dropping in price and might become slight more interesting. (these cards go 180-280euro). But again, all depends on the money you have available for it.
(should have been in the tech issues forums btw ).

I'm not in a position to compare current vid card models, as I only just got a new PC for the first time in four years. But that being said (and keeping in mind Sinergy's advice about your processor speed playing a part in performance as well), my current card is a HD4870 1gb, and I can highly recommend it.
I don't really have any very current games right now (got Fallout 3, but haven't gotten around to trying it out yet), so my benchmark for it so far was Vanguard (which was rather infamous when it came out early last year for its challenging system requirements), and that is no problem at all on highest settings. CoX (also with everything maxed out) doesn't even seem to register much, I can dual-log both my accounts without getting any lag.
I got a new card (actually new computer) recently and I got a Sapphire ATI HD4870. Performance-wise it's very good. Been running this game with everything on MAX and the only time I have had any performance issues was actually yesterday when we ran the Imperious Task Force. Full team and the MAX setting plus the outside onslaught of roman traitors got my card down to 20-30 FPS at worst times. I would recommend it but ...
It did take some tweaking to make it functional.
* turn off Adaptive anti-aliasing
* update the BIOS of the card
* never AA in any game (has allways made the game crash for me)
Otherwise it has great value for the money.
with the numbers, the first number is usualy the series, and the second the card type in that series. so a 3800 (3000 series, 800) will generaly out perform a 4200 (4000 series, lowest card type ATI make) but may not be compatible with some things like blue ray (i think thats 3000 series up though)
Same goes for the Nvidia numbering.
I did a similar upgrade and I posted a question here (totally wrong place I know but meh)
Hope it helps.
For the record I'm very happy with my 9800GT. Not sure if I could justify any more expense than that but it's great value for money

I have a Intel Core2Duo E6750 @ 2.67Ghz and 4gb of ram. That should be good, no?
Guess i would look into getting a GTX 260.

Just really wanna play on high settings without slowdowns without digging a hole in my wallet down to china.

That link didn't seem to work but I am running totally maxed out on the 9800

I can confirm Scarlet's experience.
I have twin 9800 GTX+s. Even running in non-SLI mode (i.e. really only using one card) I can run CoH with everything on max and get a smooth 60fps even in the middle of a Rikti Raid and also have a second monitor running as well.
Up until today I would have agreed with you about the problems with drivers and Vista crashes but I've just installed the latest version of the Nvidia drivers (180.48) and so far haven't had a single gfx driver crash (*crosses all fingers, toes, split-ends etc.*).
The performance gain that I've seen by running the cards in SLI vs. non-SLI mode are negligible. I can see a small difference on something like Crysis but frankly it doesn't really justify the expense. It's a bit of an extravagance tbh.
Hope that's helpful

I upgraded my GFX card a couple of weeks ago and got the Xfx 9800GT - It cost £120 and runs like a dream - CoX on Max GFX etc isnt a problem and runs fine in Vista Ultimate. Only thing I would mention is that the damn thing is HUGE - had to have a reshuffle in my base unit but then again I only have a mid-tower. Does also run SLI should you want to get another but most software I use doesnt support SLI properly anyway!

Personally the most important thing is how big is your monitor and are you planning to change it at any point during the ownership of the card?
I have a 22" TFT, 1680x1050 and a 512MB 8800GT. This does me fine with no issues at all Call of Duty 4 runs anywhere between 45-90 FPS, CoH with everything maxxed doesn;t even show any hint of slowdown and my recently bought Fallout 3 works at 1680x1050 with the graphics set to high. IMO you only really need a GTX 260/280 or an Ati 4870 if you're pushing big resolutions, say on a 24" monitor or bigger. After all, what's the difference between 60FPS and 90FPS when your TFT monitors refresh is set to 60Hz and you force the video sync to match it to avoid tearing? Sure it's nice to have some overhead to take into account busy games and scenes and possibly to keep future games in mind but it's also worth remembering that Crysis, a game that's nearly two years old still forces most modern graphics cards to their knees when set to Very high unless you spend £500 on a maxxed out Sli/Tri-Sli setup.
Personally I wouldn't spend more than £150-£200 on any graphics card. It's at this point that you start to see diminishing returns. Huge jumps in price for an extra 5-10FPS. The cards to go for at the moment are the ATi 4850's for sub £150 and the 4870 for £150-200. You can even get an 8800GT similar to the one I have for less than £100 but it wouldn't be a huge jump up from what you have Annah.
Also it's worth remembering, these newer cards are power hungry, hot running beasts. Make sure your PSU can take the extra demands, that it has the required 4 pin PCI-E connector (or two in the case of some of the top cards!) and your case ventilation is up to the job. Some cards vent to the outside of the case but these are usually 'double slot' variants so check and make sure you have space in your case and on your motherboard!

My initial choice was the 260, but the Ati card had HDMI with sound-out on their 4870 so i eventualy choose that one The difference between these 2 is minor, many games they seem to test are 'vendor'friendly (aka crysis is nvidia, while HL2 Ati controls the top - yet all with very very tiny margins).
Though your CPU might be the bottleneck (mine is a 3.6 E8400) on these cards if you push them up their limits (wich is far, very very far), they are the nextgen compared to the older 8 or 9x series of nvidia giving you a slight more 'futureproof' card.

Your best bet is www.tomshardware.com, they look monthly at old and new cards and compare them in tables and the like. There is also a lot of background reading if you need to brush up too.
you have no use for such a GPU card in this game, the GPU before this one is a 7800GT and runs everything maxed out without any problem.
the only reason i have the 8800GTS is because i want to play the more high-end games at max power.
That's not entirely true sorudo going from a 7800 to a 8800 will make a difference in CoH especially villains side or at least thats what i found when i moved up from a 78 to a 88
Hi.
Not sure where to post this so figure i'll give it a go here.
Currently looking to get a new graphics card (maybe next month or so). Not sure what to get tho. Nvidia is ok, but with their current issues with crashing under vista. Ati on the other hand have some other issues where they can't do the same stuff or something. I'm really clueless, i used to know some stuff... in the era of 3dfx, but now i've not kept up at all.
I guess what i mostly want is some comparison between most of the cards on the market. Like... how does a Novdia 8800GTS measure up to a 9800 or a GTX 260 or an ATI HD4870. And all their g'dam prefixes, suffixes and so on...
I got no idea which is faster or whatever, i got an idea what they cost tho, but sometimes the gain in performance doesn't match the cost.
I have an 8800 GTS now, would it be a significant boost if i could get another and run em SLI? and so they have to be the same card brand and model? or could i get an 8800 GT from another supplier? cause i cannot really see em for sale any more :|
