Base Rent, whats the point?

Is there any point to base rent? Lets be fair its not very much and is just a pain when you have to go and pay it. It doesn't add anything to the game IMO.

Posted

As far as I can tell, the only reason is that at the time of introduction of bases the developers were overly paranoid about the in-game economy running away and becoming hyper-inflated, so they tried to introduce safety valves that bleeds off inf from the market. For base rents they really misjudged how to do it.

well i think it in there to shut down base that are no longer in use to save space and put into cold storage

A record of when it was last used can do that. No, it's supposed to be a money sink.

Agreed. It would be nice if the devs would either drop base rent or allow us to pay it automatically.

Automatic payment would be a sensible way to do this, though even as a money sink it's not really much of one.

but hey even Stark had to pay for Avengers Mansion (and Danny Rand for [New] Avengers tower.)

Yeah, but I'm sure he was allowed a direct debit :P Auto-payment's not a bad idea. Not that it kills me to TP to Atlas to pay it. Especially since I'm logging off there now for the day job

I think that's to prevent somebody creating an SG and base then never logging in - that way the other SG members are kind of hamstrung when it comes to running the base. It's an alleged (but IMO incredibly ham fisted) way of ensuring somebody logs in every 2 weeks to pay base rent.

I can see why some kind of mechanism's necessary but it could be easily improved.

If someone was minded to create an SG then never log in, in what way would base rent payments make a difference? Sure, the base would get shut down after a while due to missed payments, but if the creator's not logging in anyway that'd be no skin off his nose.

And even if the creator did feel obliged and sneak in at 2:00am every few weeks to pay the rent (but did nothing else at all), how would that be better for the SG than if there was no rent and he never logged in at all?

Plus with the auto-demotion and promotion of the first person to log in after the SG-specific waiting period (defaults to 15 days), someone else would be promoted to SG leader and be able to pay the rent. Not an issue.

I've noticed that since i13 every base has to pay rent, is this WAI?

I only ask as my base is for my alts only, and is set on the smallest size, that prior to i13 was free!!

Very probably WAI - rent is no longer based on plot size (big plots are now both much cheaper than before, and no rent payments are due from them), but you do get charged a small amount (a few hundred prest) for each instance of a few particular items you may have in the base.

Workbenches and storage racks are the ones most people get hit by.

I believe thats the case, Nine.

I agree, the rent is a bit of a daft idea, especially now. Sure, it might encourage people to play more, but surely to goodness getting bigger bases and more shiny kit is far greater an incentive then tax?

People dont play games to be taxed, they play them to have fun. Thats like putting a tax on the Markets or Enhancement stores (which they sort of do, anyway...) Not fun, not good, not worth it?

[/ QUOTE ]No point having racks now anyway, unless you want to store event salvage... With the removal of base salvage, it appears that bases now only have 4 functions a) for teleporting to other locations b) enhancement and inspiration storage c) a meeting place or d) creating IOs.

We have our salvage racks set up so that SG members can come in and craft temporary power buffs, or top up on a few pieces of salvage if they are crafting something - so racks still very necessary

I'm probably going to sell all my racks too - I've cleared them of all the saved base salvage I had, and they're really only needed as decoration now.

You'll note from my post I did not at any point imply this was a good way of doing it.

I just said I think it's the intent... and not well executed at that.

Fair point!

FWIW I can't see why they've bothered with the current rent either - it's not enough to require effort to earn, even for a solo SG, but the need for regular payments is a minor annoyance. No plus for anyone, all minus.

I guess the answer is then that they are keeping the mechanism in-game and live until they decide the 'direction' of bases. If they had taken base rent out altoether then folk may have moaned if 'in the future' they put it back again.

Side note, hope I'm not the only one who smiled when I saw mention of CoP - WooT!

They want to see the direction of bases? Well its clockwise here but counterclock wise in the other hemisphere.

Say it isn't so, TFs and trials are some of the best parts of this game - who doesn't want more of them (or even fixes to the broken ones)
