Base Rent, whats the point?
the point of base rent...mmmm....ever payed your RL rent?
I think the question is, Surudo, have *you* ever had to pay rent for your hidden, underground, hi-tech or mystical hide-away, in which spandex and armour-clad heroes gather to conquer evil?

I don't like the rent concept for a couple of reasons.
First, it says very clearly 'your base belongs to someone else' it can't belong to you - you don't pay rent for stuff that you own. Who does it actually belong to then? The city council? A superhero housing association? There's an industrial estate somewhere zoned for base building?
Heros and villains should own their bases; sure, there are heroes and villains in comics who pay for their bases - be they Baxter Building penthouses or caves under the family mansion, but these are paid for with money.
Equating base rent with real world rent is just dumb; they are totally different things - Batman can't be evicted from his cave for not being popular enough, Superman wouldn't lose his fortress of solitude because he spent all his inf at Icon this month...
Influence is not money. And even if in the case of base rent you decide that influence is money, why would a Villain pay it anyway? They'd go and find an abandoned warehouse/cave/sewer, they wouldn't go on a council housing list or get a mortgage...
Personally, I'd rather they'd killed the base rent concept altogether and just made bases more expensive to build in the first place.

This makes the most sense it should take a lot to build the base but once built it should be yours

[/ QUOTE ]I'd like to agreed with this and add that there is already some kind of system in place which shuts down your base whether you had rent or not so the only purpose for rent seems to be some kind of control method, formerlly to stop you building the hugest bases possible but now to make sure you keep your Inventions and storage systems to a minimum

It doesn't matter whether it's labelled as rent or fuel bills or paying off local businesses to keep schtum about the bases location. Any secret base would require some costs and it's a bit silly to argue over what is a small cost and can easily be afforded. Those americans who are protesting are crazy. *does wavy finger gesture around her temple*

You're rather missing the point, I think.
The reason people (me included) are moaning about the rent payment isn't that it's unrealistic, or unaffordable, or even (as so many things are accused of being) "unfair".
It's that the I13 rent is such a trivial amount it's no challenge to collect, making the need for someone to trudge between zones and pay it every month an essentially pointless grind.
It's a bit like the feeling you'd get if every toon needed to return to the starting zone every month and click a "Registered for the Census" button before you could get new missions. It wouldn't be difficult and it wouldn't necessarily be unrealistic, but it would be utterly needless makework in a game that's meant to be all about fun.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not against the idea of having it auto-paid. I think that would be a good idea. It's just that some folks are having a moan about paying it at all which I think is silly.

Or like the first mission you get from you lvl 5 contact is to go see 'that cop' in the Hollows - EVERY SINGLY FRIGGIN TIME! - with no way around it.
Followed at lvl 15 by your contact giving you the 'mission' to talk to Jimmy Tremblor in Faultline, followed by the trip to see the Bloody Bay PvP representative.
I now know the REAL reason why it's called 'Bloody'... Bloody stupid ham fist enforced no way around it introduction to what most will have seen a dozen times over.
