Offline Mode and Run/Walk

With the upcoming Issue 13, with our offline jobs and all, i got 2 suggestion i think i would add

1. Offline mode, when you got a job, you are able to have a special costume associated with the jobs you got.

For Example, if you have Doctor, you are able to wear a special costume wearing a doctor coat, and stuff. The costume are very premade, but you are able to change things like Hair and Face, but not able to put on special things like the Reaper mask or something.

A few options for cloth you can put on will be avaliable, like simple glass like Daddy-O, so you can make your hero look alot like a normal doctor, but still with a few marks it's you.

Then you are able to enter Offline mode, in this mode you're moving around like a normal citizen, your friends and SG cant see you online, you cant use powers and you get to choose a "Real Name" wich you will be displayed as like... Amanda.

Maybe make a list of names we can choose, so we dont have citizens walking around named "Super Citizen" Kinda like choosing a title, you get to choose 1 first name and 1 last name. Maybe also a middle name shown as A. S. B.

So you might get a character called Henry S. Finkelstein...
______

2. Run and Walking, we all want this i know, we want to be able to walk with our heros, since Walking is Epic! ^^

I don't think it would be hard to add, since i know the models already have a Walking animation.

___

Hope you like the suggestions, feel free to come with criticisme, comments ect.

There is one animation for walk which relies on the size of the NPC that is walking, if you make the NPC bigger you'd need a faster/slower animation (I forget which). Ergo for players it would be extremely difficult with the current animation system. Perhaps in the future if they update the engine it might be possible but TBH I don't think they'll update the engine to allow people to be 'less' super...

He always seem to fly when I see him... even when walking would be more normal... (On TV I mean...) Now Clark Kent walks but then this isn't City of Some Random Reporter!

But walking is AWESOME! ^^

ok, the big ones will walk a little slower, and small onces a little faster... so what ?

Bad example, but he has in fact used his feet on more occasions than there are days in the year. In his Superman guise.

What about Batman? Cyclops? Hell, even The Shadow? Don't see them being able to perma-run like everyone's characters seem prefectly capable of, right?

What about having the ability to get to a spot just outside aggro range of you? Or even just chilling in PD? Run around any nightclub in this world and you're guaranteed to be dropkicked out the door, you know.

Need I rail off any more excuses for a walking option?

The walk speed isn't the stated problem, animating it with powers is. Of course, the easy solution to THAT is just make it an "Only affects self" power that disables all powers, or shuts off if powers are used.

As for the "offline mode". My character already HAS a non-hero name, thanks. I don't want that to be set to something I don't have absolute control over under ANY circumstances. It's also daft for your friends to not be able to see you online. That just takes away a huge part of why you're playing in an online game to START with.

As I understand it, and I'm by no means animation guru, it's bit more difficult than that, even without powers. Essentially walk/run is 2 processes running simultaneously: the model moving forward AND walkcycle playback, which is as far as code concerned, NOT the thing that moves character forward, just an animaation.

If you don't synch them, it looks really-really weird, If you do, you get infamous AoC gender inequality bug (anim synch code caused females to do less DPS, because female anims were different.) only here it would be "size inequality". You can avoid both problems, but it isn't something easy to do. And no, only allowing walk with powers down isn't necessarily a solution.

CoH devs and artists really made one of the best runcycles ever in MMOG, (plus, feet are obscured by particle effect when you move REAL fast for an extra bit of cleverness. ) so they MIGHT pull the trick once again... But I doubt they have the resources. Although, yes, I want a [s]pony[/s] secret identity too.

Basically, to walk at the same speed with different leg lengths, you'd need to take longer or shorter strides - you don't just move your legs faster. This would be complicated.

That's not entierly true. there is another problem, and that is wide variation in leg length alowed in this game. Walking is not like running but slower. When you walk, your leg acts as a pendulum, and swings at its natural frequancy, which is proportional to the square root of the length of the leg. And your subconcious brain knows this. It will soon spot that walking looks unrealistic if they don't do different animations for short and tall characters.

I really should do something about this signature.

Oh you cant see the Epicness of walking...

Seeing your enemy laying wounded, instead of running over finishing him off, you slowly walk over, taunting him that he cant escape, and the finishes him off.

Or your facing a big threat, instead of charghing it, you're slowly walking towards it, showing your not affaid, that it's time is slowly approaching...

Walking is epic, we cant Denie it

I believe that what Shockwave is saying is that given the amount of work required, most of us would rather the devs speant there time on something that actually added to gameplay.

Or, to put it into terms you are more likely to understand, walking = epic fail.

I would like walking, personally. But, as with a lot of bugbears to do with animations/sounds/colours, that seems to be one of the things that, unfortunately, wont be happening unless CoX gets a mahoosive overhaul and re-upload with a new engine and all the shiny gubbins that we REALLY want.
Would be nice, but it seems to be off the menu for now.

I'm not saying I'm against walking animations. Darth Vader and all the other super villain people would look a lot less intimidating if they always rushed in... But. I'd much rather have the devs spend the time in actual content.

I think walking is hard to add - otherwise, they'd have given it to us by now.

Thats because of the huge amount of resources needed to investigate the feasibility of animated hair :P
iirc it was done on one of the npc models for a video at one point and so is technically feasible

The NPCs have a walk animation. However, the NPCs are all the same hight, and don't use combat animations.

I was meaning one of the FP (iirc) Heroes not the pedestrians and they do vary in height but if its only done for one model then the height variation doesn't come into it and they definitely do use combat animations - actually the pedestrians use those as well to flee in panic.

Hardly. Crab Spiders all vary in hieght, as do other Arachnos troopers who can be seen walking. But I agree that there a probably ('probably') problems with implementing it.
Making it a power to use would be interesting..but feh =]

Still can't see how, if NPC's can walk, players can't. You wouldn't walk while fighting anyway :/

Then how come there have been instances where people have been seen doing the Walk Emote (in bugged circumstances I believe)?

Also there's at least one official movie where the heroes are seen to be walking.

I'm willing to admit there may be issues based around walking but I have yet to hear a reasonable explaination from those in the know as to why we dont' have it yet
