Regarding lower level IOs

I've been messing about recently in Mids' and was wondering:

Is it OK for a Level 50 Hero or Villain to have lower Level IO Sets?

For example, I make a Mind Control/Empathy Controller and since Crowd Control is my speciality, I focus my slots more on my Holds. This leaves my Healing Aura, Heal Other and Absorb Pain Powers with four slots each. Would it be a bad thing, if at Level 50, I slotted them with Level 30 Triage IOs?

Thoughts and opinions please!

Not a big deal if you ask me. Psy-knight has level 30ish sets on his powers and do fairly well in PvE. Mind Control has good sets for good bonuses also.

My only heal power slotted with 2 lvl 40 Heal IOs, 1 lvl 30 Heal IO and 2 lvl 30ish (possibly 35-37) recharges which is nice for me as i am running around with nearly perma Hasten + AM.

For PvP i think higher levels will be better tho.

As Knightly said, not a big deal. But why slot them with lvl 30s just because they have only four slots? The sets that go up to lvl 40/50 still have nice tier 3/4 bonuses (Ok, lvl 30 Triage could be considered better than lvl 30 Doctored Wounds unless you slot 5). In general, I would only slot lower sets if I want to exemplar much or am low on inf, but you are in no way gimped if you do slot it anyway

Yay! Good responses.

I've only just grapsed (And still am grasping) IO Sets. I know it's simple, but it's putting the slots in the right place etc. The reason I went for the lower ones is because I am assuming that things such as Numina's Convalescence are hard to come by.

Is that:

I am not gimped if I choose to slot Triage?

OR

I am not gimped if I choose to slot Level 30 Doctored Wounds/Numina's Convawhatsamathingy?

It's both. At least, not gimped compared to a fully SO'd character.

That's right. In my experience the useful lower level recipes & enhancements cost just as much as the higher level ones. People like you come along and just need an any level enhancement to get that set bonus...

Here's some information I've slowly managed to accumulate.

The regular invented set enhancements change in their effectiveness across the levels.

At level 25, normal IOs become better than their SO equivalent.

Some special set IOs (only ever one of a set, I think) have effects which span the whole level range, and low level versions are as effective as higher level ones. These are things like Aegis: Status Protection, or procs, for example.
Because of their effectiveness, they are equally expensive across the whole level range.

Which in itself is a little wrong; if anything the lower level ones should be worth more, as they give exactly the same bonus as the high level ones and are more likely to be usable if you exemp down.

Oh yes, you're absolutely right... what a daft system!

In my humble opinion, lower level IO's are often far superior to higher level ones (purples exempt from this rule) simply because any special abilities or set bonuses are applied at reduced-levels, such as in areas like Siren's Call or Warburg for PvP'ers.

If you only equip level 50 invention enhancements, you will lose every single bonus when you exemp down, making those expensive IO's little more than window dressing. Your stats won't suffer too much by using lower level versions, thanks largely to ED, and I generally find that losing 2-3% or so accuracy is worth it when im getting a 9% accuracy bonus overall

Yes - IOs never turn red and become useless like the other enh types. The only drawback in leaving an "old" IO slotted is that it'll be giving you a smaller increase to Acc/Dam/whatever than a higher level one would.

Weighed against that lower level IOs mean, as Hero2 said, that you're less likely to start dropping set bonuses when you exemp.

Which really is a rather odd design decision. Means 30-something sets are often dearer than 50-somethings in the Auction houses. Which is damn annoying when you're a 30-something.

But with Set Bonuses, that doesn't really matter. Ah! Finally! I get the jist of IO Sets! Joy!

Well, depends on the bonus - some of them are very nice, particularly as they bypass ED limits on stuff you've already got well slotted (damage, for example). Other sets give you very ignorable stuff, like +2.5% duration to incoming Sleep, +5% jump height, etc...

They are very handy - for Frankenslotting if nothing else.

Oooops!

Details here - it's even easier, really...set IOs without paying attention to the sets.

Aye, its basically slotting for the best enhancement values for the number of slots you have and ignoring sets for the most part (you might go for a 2 set bonus).

Like slotting an AOE Hold with 1 Acc/Hold/Recharge from each hold set, for example, to get about a 75% bonus to Acc, Hold and Recharge in only 4 slots beating what 6 slotting with SOs will get you.

Very, very useful for tight slotted builds like Kheldians, Doms etc.

Ah. I understand now. So is it better to slot for Sets or to Frankenslot?

[/ QUOTE ]It's usually best to mix sets at least to some degree. How much you should do it depends on your powersets, build and available inf.

Sometimes that 6th IO bonus is really juicy though, luckily I've found that its not all the time

I've just looked at that on Mids'. That's really good. Makes IO Set Bonuses seem a bit meh unless they're actually boosting a particular stat that you want boosting.

Yep, makes me wonder why people spash out so much on Set bonuses and are so obsessed with Super-uber-dooper set builds to the detriment of their actual powers. Still, means the non-super-dooper set bonus sets are nice and cheap for me to Frankenslot with and get nice enhancement values from.

I guess it depends on what you are after, I've 4 / 5 slotted my blaster with a lot of sets to get +damage (currently @ +21%) combined with a couple of sets of 5 purplers has given nice bonus's without under enhancing the powers (chucking a HO here and there also helps).

I would suggest you decide what you want out of your slotting and then get to work on mids to see how you can best achieve that goal without horibly gimping your build.
