Weather... A lateral solution?

Right, before we air this'ol roasted Chestnut, the screenshots below are in-game and the result of a bug. Possibly a fortuitous one. I don't know. But hey! There is no photoshop involved, or any other graphics manipulation...

For some reason some of my environment maps got corrupted and didn't load large chunks of the floor. When I logged in first, I thought "What the?!" Then I took a quick look around. Here's some screenshots:
Snow1
Snow2
Snow3
Snow4
Snow5

Ok. So rain is out of the question. We can maybe get a pea-souper fog (ala Dark Astoria) But I'm wondering if snow might actually be not too hard? Cap actually felt quite chilly, and simply because the game had a white floor. Just that! A white floor. Would any dev's like to make a comment?

Again, I re-iterate, this was a game bug through and through. But sometimes bugs can lead you along a new track you never considered before.

Fill it with winter beasties and you're done

that's a color render mistake, where the color of the texture doesn't load.

anyway, i would love to see something like that, maybe even some small traces of power like snowstorm or fire rain.

I'm gonna have to agree with your initial diagnosis I'm afraid. Much as I'd like to see snow/sleet/blowing leaves/hurricanes/firestorms, hell anything!

It looks like your 'pooter is broke. Because the statues on the building are suspiciously covered too. Dang them.

Sill, we can dream

Those screenies make me want to put on woolie mittens and go sleding! (It has been oh so many years since I've done that!)

/make it so!

Unfotunatly, snow is not flat. It piles on roofs, it drifts into piles. When you walk on snow it goes crunch crunch and you leave footprints.

What might look passible in a screen shot wouldn't pass muster in close inspection.

I would like snow, but if it's worth doing it's worth doing properly.

I really should do something about this signature.

I'd like to see weather effects, rain and snow being just a couple the would be good.

Changing seasons would also be a nice touch, dont know how viable it would be though, might cost a bit to much time/money to do correctly.

I love the screen shots, it does look like snow too, make me feel like wrapping up.

Must agree with Praf here. I would love to see snow and other weather effects. But you better do it properly or not at all.

rushing trough the snow, on a one horse open slee.....o wait, that Christmas

Well, lets see:
1.turn the ground white by not loading the colour maps. This would have to be a toggle, so probably quite a big code change.

2. Add random piles of white stuff. While I was flying around there's pile of debris in cap that failed to load their maps too, and were quite good at passing for piles of snow

3. footprints. Huge. Not even the snow run in Pocket D's does that. Did anyone notice?

Perfection ain't gonna happen. We can dream. But the general idea wasn't so much that it was snowing, but the general ambience of Cap changed considerably just because of the white floor. As this was caused by the maps failing to load, it seemed a relatively low code impact alternative. Personally? I'd rather see at least an attempt at a global environment change that gave the initial impression of something like snow, than nothing at all. All the trees seem to be either full on green, or stuck on autumn.

It's unlikely that anything will change, but like I said, we can but dream.

No texture = looks awful, especially close too (unless you have a rubbish GPU anyway).

There is no technical reason why they couldn't do snow properly (they have already done frozen versions of the lakes in Steel Canyon). It's just a matter of developer time.

Snow? A giant invisible intangible white tree with tiny white leaves! Run the leaf dropping code on that!

the weather doesn't kill performance if it's done right.

/e slaps forehead.

Weather wouldn't hurt performance.

Hero2's suggestion, which is basically to use the physics engine to spawn individual snowflakes, would kill performance (which doesn't make it a bad idea, it could work, and it could look good, it would just need a really really high spec machine).

Adding a few physics engine snowfakes for people with high end machines, in addition to doing it the normal way, could be very effective, since it would let you kick snow around, send up swirls when running etc.
