NPC attack chains
Ugh, no thanks!
Getting in close so particular mob types stop using their ranged mezzes is one of the core tactics my solo squishies use!
on the other hand I'd wish my MM thugs: Brute would remember that he's supposed to run up and punch people and not hang back and wait for "hurl large rock power" to recharge.
You do know that malta sappers don't use thier sap in melee?
You want to change that??
I really should do something about this signature.
This is a big no from me.
Sappers using their sap more along with mezzes from Rikti and Lost? No thanks

Okay, okay, I have seen/felt what Sappers can do. And? This would add a refreshing amount of challenge to the game. Every time I force a Rikti or Lost boss into melee on my Invul Tanker I feel like I'm exploiting.
Also it'd just make sense. Otherwise you could rename them into "Rikti Sort-of-Psionic Swordsman".
Besides, Sappers are Minions. They die fast enough.

You are, but only in the exact same fashion as every good melee combatant.
You're a knife wielder:
How do you beat a man with a polearm? You get into close range where he can't use the weapon and stab him in the face.
How do you beat a swordsman? See above, you just have to be better. (Even I can off a typical polearm user in LRP and I suck in combat.)
How do you beat a guy with a rifle? Well, preferably you stab him in the back, but if you can get in close his weapon is a great lever and very hard to get into position to shoot you if you're close. That's why soldiers have small arms and knives (which can usually be used as a bayonet).

Sappers don't ever die fast enough, even if they go down in one hit.

I think this game can have some extra challenge. Force people to think in combat.
Even my squishies can handle easy on Heroic.
or... try it to make it that the AI gets better when the level of npc gets higher. It makes sense that they learn how to use their abilities well.
- The Italian Job: The Godfather Returns #1151
Beginner - Encounter a renewed age for the Mook and the Family when Emile Marcone escapes from the Zig!
- Along Came a... Bug!? #528482
Average - A new race of aliens arrives on Earth. And Vanguard has you investigate them!
- The Court of the Blood Countess: The Rise of the Blood Countess #3805
Advanced - Go back in time and witness the birth of a vampire. Follow her to key moments in her life in order to stop her! A story of intrigue, drama and horror! Blood & Violence... not recommend to solo!

Isn't that the point of Heroic?
Raven: I did say to exclude most mobs with guns that also use melee weapons. However, I don't see why wielding a sword would get in the way of mentally blasting your enemy.
Knife wielders and gun users aside, how do you beat a guy with a sword and psi-powers?

I hadn't noticed it doing so. Pretty sure the nice Mentalists still toss psi powers around between swinging that thudding great lump of metal. Just, most of them are on a not terribly short cooldown.

Use a /wp character?
The sword doesn't count, mind. It's more of a polearm, way to big to pose a serious threat at very close range.

They fixed exactly this with voids and Quants to have them do Quantum damage in melee - of course they got severely nerfed a year later to the point they are no longer seen as a threat, maybe we'll see that happening again - I doubt it though.
As for how to beat them - mezzes work both ways
Mind of Gaia lvl 50 Defiant's first Mind/Storm 'troller.
Deadly Doc 50 Dark/Dark Corr
and lots more on Pinnacle,Union and Defiant
I meant the "how do you beat him" bit in reply to the bit about running into melee to beat a guy with a big gun, because it's clumsy to use, not in terms of game mechanics. Melting your foe's brain by staring at him would most likely not be hindered by wielding a large blade.
Well if you had to stand still and concentrate to melt someone brain by looking at them, would you do so when they was with in arms reach with a melee weapon? Or would you try to keep them at bay with your sword?
If we really wand to we can always come up with IC reasons for a mob doing something or not doing something.
The question really should be: would it be more fun for all players if the Ritki/Lost bosses use control powers in melee?

To which my answer would be "no".
Given the way player and mob targetting works there's little enough scope for tactics in combat as it is; "close quickly to force melee attacks" is one of the few options available beyond pressing buttons until someone falls over, so I say keep it in!
Extend the Mastermind pet AI attack chain upgrade to enemy mobs - at least to the ones that it makes sense on.
An example of what I mean: Currently Rikti Mentalists/Mesmerists, Lost bosses and many other mobs have all these fancy ranged attacks and controls and whatnot... which they immediately forget all about upon pulling out their swords.
What I'm proposing is to let hostile mobs (well, maybe not ones with revolvers that use sledgehammers in melee) cycle ranged attacks in melee as well. Could even go as far as to let Rikti Mentalists and similar mobs not have to redraw when using their ranged powers when having a melee weapon out.
