They were timed heavyweight pentad matches - the team with the highest score at the end of the match won. The winners progressed down the winners bracket and the losers down the losers bracket. That way each team had at least two matches to fight in. There were knockout series on each server with all servers meeting at the end. Here's a link to a Defiant bracket progression thingy from near the end:

Edited to add: Oops, I forgot that there was a bantamweight (I think) series too in addition to the heavyweight one.
