As long as your wife is fine with it...
My laptop couldn't be described as a rig in any way, other than jury-rig to get games working on the blighter.
Rig has multiple meanings, mainly nautical, however this one fits best:

Updating situation:
Watching I'm still having the same problem (screen freezes, then turns blue with lots of words and numbers, and then my pc reboots on its own accord, and when it's back I see a window saying system has recovered from a serious mistake -literal translation- with a link to the same website already shown in my previous post), I've uninstalled and downloaded 175.16 Nvidia drivers version for 3rd time.
But I'm suspecting this is not a Nvidia problem, but an Issue 12 one, as usual after an Issue is released these forums are filled with tech problems.

Defcon_Kid,
If you haven't already, please contact support with your problem.
However, from your description, this sounds like you are getting a windows blue-screen error, which (according to the webpage your linked to) is caused by your display driver crashing.
It does sound like an overheating GFX card, however you can stop the automatic PC restart if you'd like to have time to see what the blue screen error message says.
In Windows XP go to System in the Control Panel, go to the Advanced tab and click the Settings button in the Startup And Recovery section. That will pop up an options window and under the System Failure section untick the "Automatically restart" option.
If you'd rather not do this then you should be able to find the error duplicated in the Windows event log. Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer will load that up, and then check in both the Application and System logs for a red error event around the time you last rebooted (I can't remember which log it would appear in, but it's probably System). Double clicking on the right event should give you the error message displayed on the blue screen of death.
I'll take you advise and disable that auto-reboot option, Al; I haven't had any problems last 2-3 nights after downloading fot 3rd time Nvidia 175.16 drivers version, but it's true there were the graphic card ones; when I have some free time I'll check who's the manufacturer of my circuit board and I'll search for updated drivers aswell, if my graphic card was out-of-date, it's possible my circuit board is too. Besides, I won't be back to that store, it's not fair having to update drivers on a almost new pc (just a month or so).

This kind of thing really isn't the stores fault though. They sell hardware with the drivers the manufacturers supply them with. Driver updates tend to happen so fast that even the absolute latest thing to be released, on launch day, is likely to have new drivers available already.
Whenever I buy hardware, I *never* install with the driver discs supplied. It's always best to go straight to the manufacturers website and download the latest drivers from them. It's also a good idea to check BIOS updates and see if they've addressed any problems you might be experiencing.
Case in point, I just built a brand new rig. The motherboard I got was sold as compatible with Intel's new 45nm CPU's, like the E8400, so I got one of them too. Turns out the board IS compatible, but only after flashing the BIOS to a newer version than shipped. That left me with a board and CPU I couldn't use as the board wouldn't boot with a CPU it didn't recognize yet. I ended up driving 42 miles to a friends house to borrow HIS CPU, flash the board, put mine back in, and then boot it. Very annoying, but not really the fault of the store as they sold me exactly what I ordered.
It'd be different if you ordered something AFTER telling them you want all the latest drivers etc pre-installed; but if you didn't, it's not the stores fault.

Lets see... after another blue screen detention error, as I had untick automatic restart following Al advice, I've been able to see that the file that was causing me problems was "nv4_disp"; I've made some research on my own and I've uninstalled Nvidia Display Drivers, which were already 175.16 version, then I've started Windows XP in safe mode, I've deleted all my "nv4" files and now I'm running a new installation from scratch, I'll update it if anything wrong happens again.

he.. me again.. same error... freeze.. black screen... grey screen.. game crash...
But...
On a different machine. On my laptop that is surprisingly running Vista 32 with an NVIDIA gfx card. I noticed this for the first time on this system after a Vista update had run.
Back again to the NVIDIA driver vs. Vista vs. certain hardware. I know it is almost impossible to fix something that is not easy reproducable. There is some driver / gfx probs on a lot of machines/configurations. The evidence is there.
The forums are showing a lot of different people with the same crashes. And the NVIDIA forum also has some threads running on this. So the problem is there... and it is sirious.
Can there be looked towards finding the problem?!
If enough support look into this maybe we can at least point it out and make it known as a 'known error'. For now people are in the dark but can't game propably.

Funniest thing is the website where I found my solution (I hope it works properly, at least I haven't had ny blue screen yet, but several freeze screens, one of them costed me a death in-game) were talking several players about having the same problem in WoW, that gives me confidence that the problem is Nvidia, not this our lovely game.

This website is in Spanish, but I think it's quite clear what they are talking about.

IF you speak Spanish, then yes I'm sure it IS clear. But what if you don't speak Spanish? Kinda doesn't help too much then!
Any chance of a translation, to help those here who are having problems and don't speak Spanish?

You're right FFM; here we go:
<<0x000000EA error in nv4_disp for endless loop.
Since recent patch 2.4 of WoW, things aren't not working properly, lots of people are complaining about their computers crashing every 20 minutes. Not my case, but it's annoying.
After several attempts with the option "Disable auto restart when system fails" (an option you can find after pressing F8) I find something like 0x000000EA (0x84BB1598, etc) in the nv4_disp file because it has gone into an endless loop.
Without being an expert, it seems an error from Nvidia, you have to update your drivers, but the error will keep showing up unless you do the update in a certain way, even more often than before.
You can check it easily in the device properties, then check details, so you can see if the ".dll" files are not signed when they should be.
My card drivers (XFX 6800GT XXX) are from Summer 2007, latest version for this card in Nvidia website is from the end of 2007.
Step by step:
1. Download last drivers and uninstall the one you already have.
2. Startup your pc in safe mode.
3. Search in C:\Windows "nv4*.*" and delete every single file you can find.
4. Install new drivers.
5. Check that nv4_disp is now signed.>>
Anything else?

Ah, that's much clearer, thanks. It also explains why my brand new and totally clean system doesn't exhibit this problem, as the latest WHQL drivers are the first ones ever installed on it, so there's no issue with older file versions being in there still.
So, to summarise; it's likely being caused by drivers not updating properly when you upgrade. Manually uninstalling them should solve the issue.

Ha.. Finally a plausible (and probably) correct solution to this problem. Will try that asap.

I hope it works for you; in the last couple of days I've had some freeze screen issues but I haven't seen any blue screen yet.

Well, here we go again, another time the same problem: blue screen and nv4_disp causing detention loop error. I've tried the same way as before, but I've also uninstalled Nvidia nTune, that I hadn't deleted the last time, I hope it works now. I'll be playing in safe mode atm.

Might be worth getting hold of Driver Cleaner. The latest version costs money, but the old version 1.5 is still available with a quick google and should work just as well. A friend of mine was having issues with ALL his games, and since running that, he's now fine. Best to run it in safe mode though, after uninstalling first.

- Completly professional check on my hardware (NVIDIA 8800 GST)
- New install Vista 64
- Using gfx drivers directly from the NVIDIA site latest version
- Fresh install COX + all latest patches
Still crashing on the nvidia drivers... Same problem as before I brought my pc to the shop in order to check the hardware.
I am not happy...

that's very odd, what mobo are you using? and is it a 320/640 GTS or a 512 one?
i essentially have the same set up, and only once every 20 hours of in game or so will get a total system crash.
am using the 175.16 drivers. (vista 64, core 2 duo 2.33 ghz, GTS 320 on PCI-E 1.1)
And I'm not getting ANY crashes!
E6800 3ghz Core 2 Duo, GT6800 512mb, 4gig RAM, Vista x64 Ultimate, 175.16 drivers...

Which means that Liz is using the 175.19 drivers, if I remember my little look the other day.

yeah well, it might also be the "it been on for 10 hours straight 8 of which were running AoC" not that it's buggy or anything.
Yay for me... I had my first video driver crash in CoH last night...

FWIW, brand new rig built over the weekend, consisting of:
E8400 Intel Core 2 Duo CPU @ 3ghz
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Motherboard with latest BIOS
4 gig Corsair 800mhz RAM
nVidia 8800GT running latest video drivers
Vista x64 Ultimate Edition
Currently running smooth as silk, not a single crash in ANY games so far. Never seen CoH looking so good, and smooth.

Nice!
I always smile at people calling them "rigs" though. It's not an 18 wheeler truck you've got there (but I suspect the fantasy that it is could be the reason they get referred to as such, by males anyway).

Yeah, "rig"'s a bit of an ego extension - I just refer to mine as my Mighty Computational Tool.
