Are mercenaries really that bad?
Woah, I never knew the Mercs crowd control powers sucked so badly.
And I'm guessing the Special Ops aren't bright enough not to stack the mez abilities on top of each other? So you end up with both of them mezzing the same target with the both abilities?
Give SpecOps the Stealth Strike ability used by PPD SWAT operatives.
Let the Commando use his Gun Drone ability.
Replace Serum with something useful.
Mercs aren't weak in general, they're just underperforming compared to other MM primaries.

Maybe they should replace Serum with an air strike or something army like.

They got 2 mez afaik. Flash grenade and poison gas, they both got a long recharge and they often use it at the totaly wrong moment (1 mob left, 1 runner or sortlike).
Personaly i say, get rid of the DoT [censored]. 90% of their damage is DoT based, main reason why they underperform towards other pets, wich deal significant more 'instant' damage.
I have all sets now at decent high lvl (lowest is 34), they remain the weakest set and have little synergy with any secondairy. (even traps, since they are ranged and i have to move melee often).
And serum, well next to repair (wich is a ok panic button), its the most useless power in the set.

Mercs have enough synergy with Storm if you ask me.
And there's nothing wrong with rifle DoT effects, really, since the DoT period is nice and quick. Heck, look at Thugs - Enforcers, arguably the set-defining pets, are almost completely DoT based (with the exception of Blast Clip), yet Thugs is the overall most damaging MM primary.
Weird, Mercs / Storm seems like a decent match to me, all ranged pets + hurricane and AOE immobs + Freezing Rain and Tornado.
They were what I was tempted to remake the Bots/Storm I started in the US into (The bots are way too big and annoying). But I've put that toon on hiatus anyway while I try and level my Necro/Dark to 50. And after reading up on the Mercs powers I'm sorta glad I haven't started em.

Bunch of posts back i already explained the downside of DoT's, specialy with the tier 1 doing their 'mini full auto'.
Added, thugs tier 1 and 3 have 'instant' shots, unlike Mercs (commando has 2 non, scar got 1), along with the redraw and normalisation fail.
Storm i only tried on ninja, wich works pretty good. After getting 1 merc MM so high, i wasnt planning making another one

i got a Merc/dark to 50 and enjoyed it.
ive always gone for mercs when i made the odd MM. they just seem to have something about them tht makes them enjoyable and great to play with.
might look into another MM soon tbh (which is big as i normally say MMs r boring in general LOL)
Well, After complaining that heroside has less interesting pets, and CoV just lacks appeal to me I finally decided to not to read mission descriptions and rolled merc/traps MM yesterday, and got him to lvl 9... If THAT's underperformance, then I'm well, afraid to think that high-level bots do... I was able to solo +3 missions effortlessly, and +4 are possible, with some judicious use of Teleport Foe, pre-placed traps, etc, for a totally new player. Anyway, I see why they may be not so good at higher lvls, with mot opponents having resistance and all attacks being DoT... Yet I love the concept...
Would slotting Achilles Heel(- Res)+Lady Grey's (en dam) procs to tier 1 and just Lady Grey's (or other +dam procs) to all other tiers work? (I know, that's expensive...)

It isn't but that wasn't the point... Anyway, if he would underperform later I may reimagine him as RP character(s) with could be fun with /petsay.
I've not had any problems with my Merc/Dark at level 40 yet, I dont think it will solo AVs like my Necro/Dark does but it wipes large groups quicker so I focus on numbers not level

True, it rely alot on /secondairy also, but like necro even works pretty wonderful with /TA. I made a necro/TA on the US just to see if my weak mercs are related to /TA. But my /TA necro's actualy work very lovely, both single target and (minor)AoE. Ok my /trap is more fun, but they still are great to play.
And /dark pretty much suits every MM petset

Exactly. It doesn't even make sense; I mean, when you kit up the mercenaries they get: tin helmet and better ammo for their weapons. Kit up the thugs and they get: umm....tattoos and a vest? HUH? How does THAT make them better and stronger??
I've got a Dark/Merc MM up to level 21 so far (I know that doesn't sound like a lot but I'm a casual player and she's currently my highest-level toon.) She's the best out of the 4 MMs I have.
I also have a Bots one, and they're great... but if you're really getting into the game they can be very stressful to play when you're in missions. You're trying to sneak around picking off the mobs around the Big Guy... and all you can hear around you is CLANGCLANGCLANGCLANG-WHEEEEEEEEEE-CLANNNNGGGG!!! I reckon uber-villains in the Rogue Isles must have a preference for deaf minions or something...

I think the main bonus of necro is their stupidly good survivability. When you get to 50 and realise your henchmen dont actually need you around any more its a harsh rejection. I know the mercs will always need me cause without me they're nothing NOTHING!

Thats the whole issue, basicly all other sets are great in survivability. Thugs; keep up your def bubbles and they trash out huge ammount of damage, bots; 2 healing pets, great damage, stuns etc, ninja; also for def and the tier 3 one does nice stuff (rain of fire is plain is annoying but the fear is great) and the smokebomb (perma) is double dmg nonstop on 1 pet.
Mercs, ya well, they need imho way too much help to be 'elite soldiers', they wont go further then a bunch of mobs that carry a gun and think they look cool.

So if you like your concept of playing Mercenary sure it isn't the most powerfull , but it sure doesn't fail .
Nothing really is a failure in MM even merc trickarrow (i know i know)
It isn't the most powerfull but it surely isn't unplayble.
Guess its more what you want , if you want min max uber super duper AV killer machines ,then well mercenary wont cut it with a dopey secondary .
But if you just want to have fun who care even if you take all the attack powers that most think are redundant.
The one playing and paying is you , not them .
Dont think ever a MM was discriminated for having mercenary powerset in a team .
I like my mercs in a team they behave much better than my zombies and actually stick together to some degree. Soloing the necro is head and shoulders above it really, but in a team the mercs do just fine. Its basically as long as they're not the ones being attacked they're good I guess. A bit squishy I'd say

Well, the set itself has flaws. Like the LRM missile, hardly ever fired, the stealth of the seals is basicly useless and the medic has a interuptable heal (even powers such as sonic grenade or quicksand. Like the teargass grenade, it has a huge AoE, but why not lower the recahrge and give it a smaller radius, making it more often usable. Not sure if Commando has beanbag though, would have been nice.

I rarely see the snipes either, cause to get the snipes you have to be so far back it splits your group while the others run forward

I must admit I enjoy my Merc/DM but its harder going than my Necro/DM but with only slightly higher damage (and a more comonly resisted type) If there was something useful instead of serum it could well make the difference
