Anyone any experience with the DM primary on a brute, and if so, what have your experiences with it been?

I rolled a DM / Fire brute last night, and was quite pleased with the way it performed. Seemed to build fury quite nicely, had a decent recharge on the powers and given that both primary and secondary have end replenshing powers (Dark Consumption and Consume), these would likely do well to mitigate the end useage issues that both sets are famed for.

Added to this, the negative energy component to the damage and some of the fear based powers, both of which aren't commonly resisted, it'd seem to make a good choice. I notice though it doesn't seem to be a very common choice and wondered what the reason for this (other than the end usage) would be?

I love it – it’s fast and punchy, you will have a decent low endurance using, fast cycling attack chain early in the game, a great mitigation tool (Touch of Fear). To cap it all off a self heal and a recovery power. All in all I’m chuffed to bits with it. You do not pack the biggest punch, But you will be there at the end still swinging.

Edit - Jeepers I also forgot to mention Soul Drain, a great booster

Well he's only level 5 at the moment, but I was surprised just how quickly he got there. Smite unslotted was almost, but not quite one shotting even level minions even at that level, and of course they were being one shotted once the fury had built up a little. Given the speed at which fury was being amassed - likely I'd imagine due to the speed of the recharge, didn't take long before smashing through street mobs of 5 or 6 minions and a couple of lt's was actually quite easy.

Out of interest, BW, what is your DM brutes secondary? I'm thinking I might even try DM / Inv; conceptually the dark aura surrounding inv brutes would work quite well I think

That’s the joy of DM, it’s an up and running set from the get go. I have a DM/Energy Aura. Who I enjoy playing immensely. He is however very fragile, but great to solo. You have a very tough choice DM/Fiery Aura, does look so good on paper. Whilst for myself (having gone to 50 with my DM/EA), I wished I had choosen DM/Inv in some respects.

But all told I like the idea of DM/FA – I’m going to have have a look at one on Mids.

I also think Fiery Aura is more aggressive and Invulnerable more defensive. Both would survive well though.

Big fan of FA - have a level 50 Fire / Axe tank as well as a lvl 41 Stone / Fire brute, so well aware of its weaknesses.

Thanks for taking the time to post a build tho'

Only things I'd change in there is probably take Health at 16 and hurdle at 49 - extra regen from Health is nice for FA. Additionally, I'd probably take Scirocco as a patron and use the Electric Cages which is a multi target immob which makes Burn much more effective.

I'd be tempted to swap shadow maul and BA as well - but I'm thinking with the attack speed of DM, Fury build up would be less of an issue, and therefore one could afford to take it later, as you have suggested.

DM/ also goes well with Elec in my opinion. Lightning reflexes can make your 3 basic attacks cycle quicker, and the heal in the primary is good for elec's lack of one. Endurance is no problem either due to the 3 end recovery powers on offer (although i doubt many people would get all 3!) Its also the way to go if you want to make a buzzsaw build (build with a fair bit of recharge so that attack chain consists almost entirely of shadow punch and smite to build fury v quickly. Sometimes relies on procs to improve dmg)

Very true.

I tested a few variations (skipping Stamina) and settled for Dark Consumption (for Fury) + Power Sink (auto-hit, short recharge).

I'm still a bit unconvinced about whether it's worth it. I did drop Shadow Maul at higher levels and use the 2 single-target attacks for quick Fury building (along with Disruptor Blast for some extra +rechg using a proc) but most of my damage comes from Lightning Field (slotted with dmg and stun procs).

Overall it's a nice combo with some handy tools although you won't do as much raw damage or be as indestructible (at least by yourself) as other set combos.

Just started a DM/WP (15 now) one and must say so far its not bad, was never a bg fan of DM after i picked it for one of my stalkers but paired with WP seems to be working a treat.

I love Dark melee, got a 50 DM/Elec Buzzsaw brute (Blitzkrieg Commando) and it is the most fun toon i have ever played. It took a lot of levels and cash for the whole "buzzsaw" to get going but now he is incredibly fun to play. Very fast recharging attacks, Power sink to remove all end problems, Soul drain + Ball lightning to add some AoE damage, 2 damage procs in each attack and Siphon Life to get some healing in there. Its so much fun to play, not always the best brute around but never far from.

Skipped both Shadow maul (3 sec rooted?! no thx) and Midnights grasp and never regretted it.

I have a DM/DA brute. I had rolled him in utter ignorance as he was my first toon. Of course my time playing and learning has seen to that.
DM is pretty good for end consumption and when slotted well probably has the best dps of any melee set in the game.
The 3 primary attacks are your bread and butter of the set. They're quick and good fury builders, although Shadow Maul is painful to watch when it misses.
Touch of Fear has been a very handy power for me. Mag 3 loveliness. 3 hits with this will have an AV trembling (purple arrows down of course).
I respecced out of Siphon life and waited for Dark Regen in DA. The reason for this was it took far to long to recharge and the health return was awful.
I never bothered with Taunt as I had Apprentice Charm to get the attention of mobs. Does the trick.
Dark Consumption is a life saver. The recharge is a little long for my liking but considering you get anywhere from half to full endurance back, it's worth it.
Soul Drain is awesome. Jump into a mob, fire this baby off, dish out the pain and let the xp flow.
Midnight Grasp isn't a spectacular tier 9 power but it is a fantastic mitigator. Like Touch of Fear this will hold pretty much anyone, but unlike ToF, this hurts...alot. It's the highest damaging power in DM. Half is burst damage, the other half DoT.

My DM/DA brute managed to hold down a Hero level Citadel solo. I had got him down to about half life before finally biting the dust, and I was lackeyed. I usually suck against AVs but I really surprised myself then.
