Does anyone do fiction anymore?

Just wondering. All the Creative Genius winners seem to have been art recently and there's not much fiction to be seen.

Is anyone still doing it, or has it all moved off to Roleplaying?

I don't bother doing fiction in the Creative forum anymore, my bits all get posted into the IC story thread. Two reasons being:

One: I work better doing short stories, which fit something like the IC story thread better than a post of their own in here.

and

Two: Stories don't really win the Creative Genius, so I've no incentive to post in here, when the RP forum is a more logical place to post them. I think the closest story so far that's come to winning in recent months was FFM's 'The Diary' in November.

I've been putting some thought into writing a Villain's story, but a serious lack of creativity has been hampering me lately.

That and I'm typically used to writing Warcraft related things, which has kind of turned my writing style into a fairly dark one. Not the sort that's entirely appropiate for the CoX board.

Once I get this damned writer's block snuffed though, I should get something out there. Eventually.

Yay stories!

i do try from time to time, but a) nothing gets finished
b) i relize half way through i been regurgitating some ones else's story. so have to start again.

I must admit, the reason I haven't finished that, and not really done much more since, is because people stopped commenting on posted stories, and they stopped winning Creative Genius. I'm not personally bothered about never winning it, that's not why I wrote the stories; but generally everyone just kinda stopped around the same time, and I suspect the main reason is because only art was winning anymore... I think that, in part, that's because pictures are easier to judge than fiction.

Writing stories is only part of the fun for me. Hearing that people are actually enjoying them is far more important. Hell, even the number of views on story threads plummeted.

I was thinking of doing a bit on Velvet based around Ammon's petition plot and was wondering whether to bother putting it here or in Roleplaying. I guess it's going in Roleplaying.

Personally, I've stopped READING stories...

There are some reasons for this:
- time needed
- a good deal of the more resent stories I've read were of a type that doesn't appeal to me
- deminished interest

Not to mention the time and effort needed to comment on a story with any thing else then a 'aplause' or 'boo', I've not replied much to the stories I have read.

Personally I've hundreds of stories I want to write but simply no time.

There's one of my epics on the Off-Topic Forum if you want

I actually have a nice origin story for one of my characters which I was originally going to post. Part of the problem I have is getting the time to sit down and type it out since it's all in notebooks mingled in with odd jokes and bits of stand-up. The other part of the problem I think is that I always look for creative feedback with any writing I don't feel that I would get that here.

That's no indication on the people here of course. The last time I posted a story I got a few responses but it hardly made a splash on here where as posts with pictures in would always get a lot of praise and always seam to be the first ones up for the creative genius awards. I suppose that's because pictures are far more accessible than the written word will ever be.

Eventually I just thought there was no point. I had told the story, written the story once for me and I am happy with that. Ultimately anything like this will have little interest to others since it wouldn't involve characters you know. In this case IIRC I had set it in Chicago. Well, the character doesn't even reach paragon until the end of the story when he starts his new life so it is a completely different world to the COH universe as well.

Sorry for the double post but really wanted to comment on this.

I think it is something you have to just accept in writing. You will never write an original story. Somebody somewhere will have come up with it before.

The trick is (and this is something Hop, that you are already doing in part) to realise when that's happening and then to take what you know of where the original story is going and subvert it, take it away completely from the direction that the story you are copying would have gone.

That is also a wonderful cure for writers block as well incidentally.

Aye, as have been said, one of the problems with stories is that... well, I can never figure out something to say! Other than "Good work, can't wait to see more!", which seems a little post count plus one-ish.

i dont pos stories here anymore (not that i really did to begin with) because there was no interest in them, so they've all tottered off to the iconites "heroic Tales" section...which is basically as neer to a creative thread as we hae :P

But somebody has to have come up with the original - who's to say I, you, that bloke over there isn't going to be the first one?

Imagination isn't finite, so there are thousands upon thousands of opportunities to write an original story.

As for why I've not written in a while: I burnt myself out during NaNoWriMo, and I'm determined to edit that and get it all done before I let myself start another story and end up forgetting it.

Fiction can and has won the Creative Genius award in the past. Personally, I'd like to see more fiction winners, but very little seems to get nominated these days.

A viscious circle there I'm afraid, Bridger. People stopped nominating because stories stopped winning, and as they stopped being nominated, writers stopped posting...

I started writing Leese's backstory some time ago. Every time I start working on it I start up the game to check the layout of Salamanca or something, and an hour later I'm dinging 38.

If I can find the time to stop playing the game sometime, I might get back to work on the story.

The stories that keep getting told are thousands of years old. That doesn't negate the use of imagination. What I was trying to say is that if you shouldn't just give up because it's going the same way as another story.

I went through the past awards the other day in fact and there seams to be a fairly good mix of items. More pictures later on of course but as has been mentioned, there has been a decline.

As I said, for me it's more the lack of (constructive) response from others that stops me posting. Nothing to do with Creative Genius.

Actually I was more upset (upset is the wrong word but it's late and I am full of cold so it will have to do) that marvellousweb didn't get a mention. But I suppose that's because I spent more time doing that than I ever would have writing a short story.

And time of course is another concern. I spend about a third of my working life writing at the moment and I work for around 15 hours a day (give or take a bit of course). When I do have time on my hands, making time for personal writing is a very long way down the list of things I do to relax. I suppose that is why I want to get constructive criticism out of it.
