Artistically challenged, assemble!

Seeing as art seems to be the new thing on the Creative forum at the moment, I thought we could do with a post where us artistically challenged people can post their practice artwork for others to see, comment and critique (Constructively!) without clogging the forum with many new topics about it.

I have a confession to make, I used to do art, and kind of stopped for 4 years, and now have no talent whatsoever. :< So I spent about half an hour today doing a rough little basic drawing of my main character, Zortel. When I say rough and basic, I mean it.

Avert ye eyes, lest ye be blinded!

Note that I wasn't actually -looking- at my character at the time, but going from memory. Probably a mistake there, but was too busy with other things on my PC to load up CoH.

Great Idea Zortel!

I was thinking of starting a EU COH fanart group on Deviant just to have all profiles and works in one place.
Will get back to yous if I see that there is interest.

Zortel:
First of all: Very good sense of masse/depth.

I can't see any trace of construction lines and I think that's why you lost the sense of proportions (back leg and arm)

I like the torso/ribcage as they seem quite accurate.

Last thing that jumps at my eye is the pencil strokes. Very stagered. Maybe try loosening up your wrist a little?

Will do a quick draw-over tonight when I get home.

Edit: if this thread takes off, can Bridger sticky it pwetty please?

[/ QUOTE ] Thanks, sadly when it comes to buildings and objects I can't draw those that well.

[/ QUOTE ] I use 2 sheets of paper, one with a rough frame on, then lay the other piece over and draw like that so I then don't have to get rid of the lines. But its been quite a while since I learned the right shapes and length so that might account.

[/ QUOTE ] I don't spend too much time looking at torsos and ribcages, honest.

[/ QUOTE ] Always a problem I've had, I hold the pencil in an odd fashion too, quite close to the point. Old habbits die hard.

Thanks for the pointers!

I like the idea of a group on DeviantArt - bit like an "Artistically Challenged Support Group". Of course the word "Deviant" is soo similar to the word "Defiant" which has an added bonus

Hmmm tempted to put up some of my random doodles.

Also want to try out a style I have in mind, but just need to find some time to actually put it to practice.

And then scan etc

I'll try and get something done in the week. If i havent ill scan in my doodles i did earlier

Brilliant idea (and nice work Zortel). I'll be posting a few things as soon as I can get a new scanner. Damn thing broke

[Edit]

As an after though. I was wondering if the whole learning to draw thing had changed peoples perceptions of shapes and there interaction. I know it has with me.

Ooh, a place to post my doodles and not feel as if facing down a firing squad!

My version of Starfire.

I chose the back as:
a). Faces are a no-no for me. Why do people even have to have noses?
b). The picture was there on the titansgo.net website, and I'm much better at copying than freestyle (ha! It's true, I swear!).

So, there we are, my oddly coloured in in photoshop drawing of someone's back.

OK I managed to scan these just before coming home but Deviant art appears to be playing up a bit so couldn't see these in my gallery.

Anyway, they are just some studies. I'm following a few things in 'How to draw Anything' by Mark Linley and I also picked up a book called 'How to Draw Comic Book Heroes and Villains' by Christopher Hart. It was an old dog-eared copy from a car boot sale but it has been good. Anyway, here they are:

The River

The Bridge

A Study of Heads

Not bad at all matey.

You guys should come join the CoH FanArt on DeviantART. There's all different lvls of art work by fans of EU CoH players, myself included.

Send a shout out to Swissy and I'm sure he'll be more than happy to add you to the ever growing list of talent!

Don't worry about it. If I keep seeing people posting there efforts it will make me keep sticking at it*.

I don't have anything I feel confident at posting yet, but I might do soon, have to wait and see.

*Mr Marvellous apologuises for the distinct lack of grammer in that sentance but can't be bothered to change it
