I like the claws/regen set. Been leveling quite quickly and have the difficulty setting set quite high so it's always interesting.

I have tried my bro's MA/Invul scrapper and found it really fun too, but I have been told that invul takes a while to come into its own.

I recommend claws/regen and take the fitness pool too for (nearly) always up scrapper.

AoE is king in PvE, so Spines/(Regen/DA) are by far the best choices.

If you like giggling at insanely high amounts of damage, spines/da is for you. 10 seconds of quills, death shroud, and all your AoE attacks will outdamage Inferno, and still leave you with enough endurance to fire off Dark Regen and get out of there with no issues.

Make no mistake though, if you want solo ability, go /regen. Spines/DA (or anything else/DA) is godly IF you have endurance. Given that you'll probably end up getting Acrobatics to stop yourself being knocked about like a toy, the end drain can get you down. Regen doesn't have these problems, since it has 1 toggle and doesn't require powerpools.

If you want speed, claws is the answer. It has a very fast attack chain that can end up outdamaging everything else over time, and what it lacks in burst damage it makes up for in focus. Which costs and recharges only a little bit more than the rest of your attacks, outdamages most, and is ranged.

Dark Melee is... not fast. A decent, speedy attack chain requires either you take power pool attacks or have a pocket /kin handy.

Katana is fast, but supposedly the draw times add up.

BS is hardly a speedy set, but it's got power and burst damage.

Overall though, I think if you want a fast set claws/regen would be the way to go. Good attack chain, and very little downtime as far as regen is concerned.

Do you mostly solo, play in small teams or in large teams? If you're in large teams the MaX is right, the AoE from Spines is the way to go. Not much help as you've already found you don't like it.

Otherwise, there aren't really any terribly gimpy sets or bad combinations for scrappers. /SR and /Invuln both take a while to come into their own (although both can be great at high levels). /Regen is probably the easiest secondary to get going with.

All of the primaries have something to recommend them - Claws, Katana and Martial Arts are the fast ones, Spines does nice AoE, Broadsword does high damage per. hit (I found the slowness of it pretty wearing, though) and Dark Melee is an interesting bag of tricks that mostly needs to concentrate on single target damage.

Spines for levelling quicker, BS to die less often, imo

BS/Regen!!!! BS for the hurt, Regen for the always up end bar. I do like Invuln too, as it makes for the most suicidal of scrappers, always first in, usually before the tank!

In a straight comparison between spines/reg and katana/reg, I would go for Katana. I find it to be a lot of fun for PvE - particularly when you want to pick out individual targets, such as bosses or Sappers etc... (those poor sappers must have hated the sight of me)

Spines is fun in it's own way but, in my opinion, you can really enjoy Katana due to it's 'up close and personal' nature.

When fully slotted your main attacks - Golden Dragonfly and Soaring Dragon - totally rock. High damage - with fast recharge.

Have fun

I really like invul as secondary, although it takes some time to get into. My only problem is AVs and MIs, other then that you're pretty good equipped to have high survivability.

Unstoppable is nice too, use herostats to know when it runs out and be ready to press a cab followed by Dull Pain, in most cases you can be in the middle of a fight and still survive.

Spines in big groups,
Martial arts solo.

In PvE Teams, AoE is the king. Anyone telling you their build is godly is just saying they like their build. AoE in teams is unequivical.

Therefore for primary sets:

Spines > Claws/Bs/Katana > Dark > Martial Arts

Secondary

Pffft.. Regen effects ONLY you. Its a good set, no doubt, but since it effects only you, has no AoE its not good in big teams. Super Reflexes is almost as bad, but you could say that Quickness power would improve your AoE primaries, so it has the slight edge.

Invun has a power that increases your accuracy and defence in proportion to amount of nearby mobs, so probably has the edge over Super Reflexes.

Dark wins clearly in secondaries. AoE effects all over the place.

Therefore, for big teams, you cant beat Spines/Dark. If you dont like spines, id go for broadsword, katana or claws. If you dont like Dark id go for invun but not much in it.

Sorry to all you Ma/Regen scrappers out their. You good at PvP and solo, but thats balancing for ya

For PVE teaming id have taunt in the build, for PVP teaming id have taunt in the build. Taunt is nigh on a must have!

Impale is good but it wont pull a boss of a tank and when one is fighting +5s i might have to do that.

why would you want to fight a 5+ boss with a scrapper. you won't be able to do damage. i agree taunt is very good in pvp neglable in pve.

i say Katana/regen or katana/sr

i have a katana/regen myself (50) and did it in 230hours pretty much soloing all the way with the occasional teaming here and there

for the record i've had a load of other scrappers too, and they've all been deleted.

allthough if heroes ever get */nin i'd put that rather high since i love it on my stalker

Explain why in PvE Dark Melee is better than MA. I cant see it.

Higher DPS (second overall, IIRC), acc debuff, less resisted, touch of fear. Easily better.

I think its only slightly better than MA for DPS on a single target but MA has crippling axe kick which makes its dps if calculated a little differently using potential number of targets hit over time may actually come off better. However DM is gonna be far better at certain things in PVE than all of the rest of the other primary sets just by looking at what it has to offer.

The -recharge in spines is alittle over the top imo.

I found Spines a bit of late bloomer. In the 40s I was an Unstoppable death machine. If I hadn't messed up my build I would have been almost as good in the early 30s, but at the low levels you only really have 3 good attacks, Lunge, Impale and Spine Burst. Barb Swipe is so meh it pretty much isn't worth it. The single targets attacks were very endurance friendly, I vaguely remember not getting or needing Quick Recovery until I hit level 12 or so. Spines revels in large spawn sizes, so if you can find a good tank to team with you are laughing.

The only other sets I've played are Claws ( to mid teens ) and Dark Melee ( to 39 ). Claws seems quick and endurance light, however it's main uniqueness seems to be in Follow Up, a kind of weird build up attack.

Dark Melee is completely strange, it is mainly single target and the first 3 attacks are the bread and butter of the set. However it has the best Build Up power and a endurance recovery power ( although IMO the recharge in it is too long ). It also has a self heal and a very effective single target fear attack. Unfortunately the tier 9 is completely uninspiring and the only AoEs it has are not really about damage.

As for secondaries, the ones I've played the most, Regen and Dark Armour are pretty click happy.

For Regen it is the case of managing your 3 different flavours of self heal ( Reconstruction is bread and Butter heal, Dull Pain for big heal + hit point boost, Instant Healing for the God Mode regen for 90 seconds ). Using these at the right time is the difference between regen being very hard to kill and pretty squishy. Regen also has Quick Recovery which is a better version of stamina. This means that endurance management is not a problem until high levels.

Dark Armour has the best self heal in any of the defensive sets. Unfortunately it costs lots of endurance. It also has 2 control powers which do Fear and Disorient to foes respectively. This makes it pretty fun. It is a complete endurance hog. There are lots of toggles in the set, which makes it a pain early on. It has a damage aura too.

What works well is down to an individuals style of play. Asking whats best always starts the same old arguments and everyones personnel likes and dislikes come into play.

Spines seems to be a little over the top for secondary effects generally.

After all Fire Blast has DoT only. Ice has -speed and -recharge. All the spines attacks have both.

The 3 best attacks also have extra secondary effects.
Impale is ranged, but also has -fly, possibly -jump and immob.
Ripper has knockdown, a very small cone and extra DoT.
Throw Spines has a wide ranged cone and extra -recharge.
