Arena for me = no. I don't pvp, period. IC or not I'm not a fan I'm afraid.

[/ QUOTE ]

I've only ever been in the arena once and that was ages ago. Why are you against it? I would have thought it would have been good Danger Room style fun. Or am I missing something?

I just don't like pvp on anything. I don't play versus modes in a local network, on a console or online. The game and people make no difference I just dislike the whole feeling of pvp.

Hi all,

Forgive me a "noobish" question (and maybe it will be obvious how to do it once I log on, but I've never tried and better safe than sorry) - how does one skip the tutorial and go directly to Atlas/Galaxy untainted by XP?

Posted

When you make a character you get asked "Do you want to enter the tutorial?" click "no". Then pick your starting area (atlas in this case).

Battleflag, you'll find this is quite a common attitude for gamers in CoH. This game was originally PvE only, and a lot of people chose it for that very reason, an MMO without PvP. It's now got PvP and quite a few people hate it, and won't touch it with a 60 meter cattle prod...

Don't get me wrong I don't really think it's a bad idea or anything and I'm quite happy for you to do it. Also I'm not trying to be difficult or obstructive. For any that enjoy it go right ahead, I'm not here to tell you how to play your game. But by the same point I'll opt out for the opposite reason many opt in.

They enjoy it. I don't.

EDIT: Also I already have an IC reason to opt out lined up.

I still don't get why people don't like The Arena(I've no real experience I admit), it's not as if you'll be attacked unless you want to be. Isn't it a more interesting comabt situation? I'd appreciate more explanation if anyone could provide, just out of curiosity.

Thanks

No offence but I believe. "I don't enjoy it." Is the single most concise explanation I can give. The precise reasoning? Purely psychological.

If I had to guess?
1: I'm not a competetive person by nature. Ergo the adrenaline that fuels and stimulates a competetive nature is a feeling I dislike and avoid.
2: Prior experience tainted my view on it.
3: I don't find it "fun" I prefer co-operation to conflict.

Just because it's "interesting" doesn't mean it's "stimulating". At best I find it stressful, at worst boring.

Different people have different reasons. These are just some of mine.

Stasis sums it up nicely, but here's more detail.

Some people simply dislike the competitive concept of PvP.
Some people don't like the idea of facing off against another human.

Far more people have had, or have heard about, bad experiences with PvP. A substantial minority of PvPers come under the category of PKer (Player Killer, PC Killer, whatever). A PKer often falls under the heading of Ganker, someone who will attack anything, but all PKers want one thing, to ruin someone else's gaming experience because they find it fun. While their behaviour is usually frowned upon by the GMs, it is rarely dealt with effectively, so it continues. PKers are one of the main reasons people dislike PvP.

Even the more reasonable PvPers often fall into the trap of thinking that PvP involves a few seconds of combat and a lot of telling the opposition how [censored] they are. While not directly harming, this behaviour tends to remind others of schoolyard bullies, another major turn-off.

Personally, I have and will again, engage in PvP. In CoH, the arena is the likely place I'd do it because I like friendly, totally OOC matches against friends. (If I'm in a PvP Zone, I'll fight if attacked, but I don't go in there looking for a fight.)

I'd never use the Arenas IC (as an arena), for the simple reason that I think the entire concept is stupid and have done since they issued the pre-publicity material for the things.

It would help more, I think, if there was a kind of "Training Match", were you could actually earn something usefull to PvE. Maybe a player vs PvE mobs match to practice tactics or something. That would probably not work with the games current setup though. Something like, I dunno.. 10 hours training against Council mobs gives you 5% +Def against them as you are well used to their combat techniques and can better avoid their attacks? Only a small advantage, and takes a lot of work to earn.

Oh, and I'm not forum stalking you mate... Honest!

Thanks All

I think I understand now. I used to play Counterstrike before moving on to other games and people were forever being very! unpleasant; I suppose PvP can attract that kind of person. I'll have to give the arena a try properly to see what I think. I've never imagined it would be too much fun alone but years of reading The Xmen has made me want to try the team version.

Thank you very much for all of the responses, I appreciate it.

Does anyone really like it then?

Stalk all you want mate, you've got some interesting things to say, you're arena idea for one. It sounds good.

To All:

This is just a passing thought and nothing I have plans for(at the moment) but I wondered if anyone had any interesting ideas for a themed team up/SG. When I was kid one of my favourite teams was The Defenders, a fairly magical themed kind of group, although not completely.

Just a bit of chit chat, any thoughts?

Finn29 and myself are two 'surviving' members of the SG 'Liberty Squadron', which was based on IC roleplay as Golden/Silver-age comic heroes.

Perhaps with some pruning of discontinued members, the idea can go back on track?

If it was worth doing, it would be exploitable. If it wasn't exploitable, it probably wouldn't be worth actually doing. Catch 22.

I'd still like to see the ability to set up training matches against chosen mobs. No xp, no gain, no debt, just the opportunity to try out tactics and powers against a variety of mobs. They could have introduced something like that rather than the rather pointless Gladiator system, but they didn't. Hey ho.

Finn29 mentioned that to me at one time, I've always liked the retro idea. People always mention Golden and Silver Age; now there's an excellent publication called Cyber Age adventures, but I'm never quite sure of the definition of these ages. Is there a site i could look at to get a more clear idea?

If she would fit the concept, my Lady Europe would certainly be interested in auditioning for the Squadron - she was my idea of a "traditional Golden/Silver age" heroine, if I understand the definition correctly, so I hope she would fit in.

Battle - funny you should mention Cyber Age Adventures - I just ordered three of those and have read the first - I think it was actually quite good superhero fiction.

I love the stuff and can't wait for issue 2 to be published, they're looking for funding. One of my emails to Frank is in the front--claim to fame . I'm very much behind the superhero fiction movement in its prose form and hope to see it sitting on the shelf alongside more mainstream scifi/fantasy. You should have a look at the sites I mentioned, there's some good stuff. At The Metahumen Press there's a good retro story called Century and a slightly futurisic one called The Militia .

By the way, Lady Europe conjures up a great WWII image for me.

Thanks - I will check out the links. The books I bought were available from Amazon and were three out of a series of 4 books (the last one wasn't available ) - I really hope they succeed in launching more.

Lady Europe is an EU-based concept, so no WWII - that's why I am also a bit uncertain exactly how she would fit in with the silver age/golden age terminology - she was actually the third toon I ever made, but I have had her mostly "parked" for the last 14 months or so, but now she could do with a dusting off

I've been thinking.

I've been reading Ultimate Spider-Man TPB's and the Ultimates closely resemble a group of super-powered secret police (om National Television though ) with their arrests of people for illegal self-genetic-enhancements etc.

How about we rethink the Liberty Squadron and turn them into a group of Golden Age "themed" heroes trying to enforce Governmental laws on metas and paranormals?

I know obviously there are dozens of characters who could wash the floor with us, but there's always ways to get around that. One being we aren't just arresting everyone. Just thought it'd be ironic to be arresting folk, but calling ourselves Liberty.

Thoughts?

As an outsider...

Two immediate thoughts:

You are setting your group up to be automatically in conflict with some of the heroes you are going to associate with.

Perhaps more seriously, I don't think there's anything written down about what the government regulations on meta humans are!

So.. a bunch of Sentinels then?

Given the power levels of some of the heroes at the statue, I don't think they'd last very long!

It sounds inteteresting but were you thinking of arresting mobs or players? If players how?

Let's keep these theme ideas coming, they're interesting. The irony is good, especially these days.
