Paragon Comedy Central - Comedians wanted!

After the success of Proximity's quiz night on Easter Monday I was racking my brains for something else to do.

And then it hit me...

"A Mortificator, a Sapper and a Jaeger walk into a bar...."

How about a stand-up comedy night? Hold it in Pocket D, give it a catchy name like Paragon Comedy Central, and get a few aspiring comics to do short routines in front of an appreciative audience. Maybe chuck some Inf around for their efforts.

Would anyone be interested in something like this? I'm sure with some of the personalities we have in this game we could come up with a fun-filled evening. Jokes would have to be fairly clean, obviously, and wouldn't have to be related to Paragon/CoH at all. However there's a few threads on the General Forum with some great short CoH-related gags in like "What do you call a fat Vahzilok? Dead weight"...

I was thinking a weeknight evening from 8pm to maybe 10pm. We'd need a few people to be interested in the stand-up part and some people to heckle, er, applaud their efforts.

I would be up for compere duties if this got off the ground.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

A bit more elaboration:

If we get a few people willing to do a short set each, that I would get some kind of running order so that people knew when they were going on.

Jokes would have to be fairly short and ones that work with only one person typing them out.

The audience wouldn't be there to shout abuse or anything, it should be a frindly, fun environment like the atmosphere at my quiz night - ie a bit of banter but nothing too horrible.

This is how I see the processes:

First Prox welcomes audience, and tells a couple of gags, then introduces first standup. TG goes on stage area, types out a few gags, "noob" chant starts. TG tells a couple of Pyra n00b jokes. Audience raise number cards and laugh. TG leaves. Prox ushers him off tells another gag, introduces next standup.

Nothing too strenuous. It's not like a gameshow or anything. If I can get a couple more people interested in the standup side then I'll try and set a date. It'll definitely be sometime in May though

You know, you don't have to swear to be funny. Not all humour is as base as South Park.

I had full comedy sets and song nites scripted on my SWG Wookiee, used to just tour the cantinas every weekend doing shows. Ironically I'm probably going to be too busy with IRL standup to make it along, but if you come up with a date I'll see if I can get online for a bit.

"I once said to Bill, 'Bill, why do you always have to use all those dirty words? Bob Hope doesn't use dirty words.' Well, Bill didn't like that very much...to be honest I'm not sure Bill liked Bob Hope very much either."

- Jim Hicks on his son.

Ah but its not the swearing that makes Bill Hicks funny, its the smoking, I mean its his view on life, or his hatred of the human species at least

"Well, they found my diary today.
They were appropriately appalled
at the discovery of the eight victims
They're now putting it all together.
Women wrapped in silk
with one leg missing
Eight legs, one body, silk,
spider, brilliant!"

Actually Hick's philiosophy was based on a profound love for mankind. That's what made him so powerful. Underneath the angryness he was basically a hippy, his angry style was born of a frustration at the direction of the world and as a way of promoting his veiws without seeming like an airy fairy Hari Krishna type. If you want hatefull comedy have a listen to some of Lenny Bruce's later stuff.

I think swearing can be funny. I know a few good routines by people like Alexi Sayle and Tony Allen (nobody has ever done sweary like the original Comedy Store lineup). The Tony Allen one is one of my favs and is about gender politics and the Alexi Sayle one is a 3 minuite high speed nonsense monologue which is made up entirely of profanities, it's funny because of how long it goes on and how every time you think he's finished he makes up something even filthyer.
