Effectiveness of Taunt?

I've never used Taunt/Confront powers; did the old Taunt bring ranged enemies any closer than their max attack range (excluding them cycling to melee attacks)?

How effective is the -Range in PvE play?

Apparently, I play "City of Shakespeare"
*Arc #95278-Gathering the Four Winds -3 step arc; challenging - 5 Ratings/3 Stars (still working out the kinks)
*Arc #177826-Lights, Camera, Scream! - 3 step arc, camp horror; try out in 1st person POV - 35 Ratings/4 Stars

The -range is of marginal use, although I'd imagine it's nice for Tankers where it hits more than just the target you've got the box on. Mobs that prefer range will just move closer, so they're at the maximum range that they can still shoot at you.

Still, even that can help a lot. There are several Mobs in the game that don't want to close the range at all, and Taunt makes them do just that. I can bring them into range of cones and AoEs where they weren't before. The -Range on Taunt was a great player-created addition to the power.

I'm not saying I don't like the -range, and "marginal use" means "still useful, but mostly in corner cases".

For the most part, things will close with you already. The ones that don't will continue to stay back even when taunted, they'll just be closer. With Scrappers and Brutes the -range only hits one mob, so if there's a group (Council Marksmen for example) then you'll only get one per Taunt/Confront. If it consistently pulled all of them in (like the Tanker version) I'd like it better, and even said as much ("nice for Tankers"). I just don't play Tankers (I have two, period, and neither has been played in over three months).

[/ QUOTE ]What makes you say that for Brutes? Brute Taunt is identical to Tanker Taunt. It's the punchvoke that's different between the two of them, and that doesn't apply -range for either, anyway.

CoD lists an "Unknown" effect on Taunt, but that effect just allows the -range to hit separately from the taunt in PvP.

I find the -range very useful on my tanks with taunt.

Brute Taunt is an AoE like Tanker Taunt. The -range component of Brute Taunt however is applied only to the actual target and not those around the target that were otherwise affected by the Taunt.

What makes me say that is the post - which I now can't find - where it was stated to work that way by Castle when the functionality was first put in.

In absence of that, I can't find anything to suggest that Brute Taunt only applies -range to one target.

I went to check the patch notes and was surprised that particular quirk went unmentioned.

I've always known Brute taunt to only have a single-target debuff myself.

[/ QUOTE ]

There is Taunt and taunt.

The former is a specific power - AoE, caps at 5 targets, and includes a -Range effect (caps at min. 25% range).

The later is an effect several powers in the game has.

Tankers have "Gauntlet" aka "Punch-voke" - a built in aoe taunt effect that will hit up to 5 NPCs even on single target powers, more on other AoEs - but taunt only, no -range.

Brutes have a "mini-Gauntlet" aka "Poke-voke" - built in taunt that only hits the normal targets of a power.

[/ QUOTE ] Looks like somebody is going to have to use the Mk analyser power and do some testing.

I meant Taunt. Hence why I mentioned a debuff.
