IE and security pop ups while browsing the forums.

There is a pop up that constantly appears while I am browsing the forums. It mentions that there are both secure and unsecure information, and do I wish to view unsecure information. This happens *constantly*. I've changed all my security settings for the forums to most lenient, and I've looked for a way to disable that particular pop up. No luck.

Any help on this? (other than changing my browser)

IE 7.

See if this works for you:

DON'T click on "My Home" until after you're done reading the forums. I only get the security pop-ups after clicking on My Home (to read pm's, etc). I never get them before clicking on My Home.

It did work. I read your post, closed all my browser windows, launched the forums from the updater panel, and clicked on a name to view last post (which would always bring up the pop up) and it went straight to the thread.

Thanks!

The solution is actually simple. I discovered it back during the I13 Closed Beta, when we were also testing the new forums that we'll be moving to Soon™! A lot of us kept having that same problem.

What you do is:

<ul type="square">[*]Go to Tools -&gt; Internet Options[*]Click on the Security tab[*]Click on the Custom Level button[*]Go down to the Miscellaneous section (it's near the bottom of the list)[*]Find the option Display Mixed Contet (also kind of near the bottom of the list)[*]Change it from Prompt to Enable[*]Click OK, then click OK[/list]
That should stop the Security Warning from popping up.

Actually, it doesn't always.

I've had mine set this way for some time. When I got my new system it was one of the first things I set since I knew about it.

On occaision, if I go to My Home and then start browsing other parts of the forums within the same browsing session, I'll start getting the popups again. If I close out the browser after going to My Home and then reopen it to read the forums, I don't have the problem.

I don't have the popup any other time.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

You can also go up to the URL and change https://boards..... to be http://boards..... The 's' causes the connection to try and be secure, which is what makes this mess.

I've been told its the sites that avatars are hosted on that causes the issue most of the time, and why it doesn't happen every time.

On a side note, I use Firefox, so I don't have to worry about it.

Happens with IE8 as well. Not a solution.

To you, maybe not.

To browsers, there is a big difference.

[/ QUOTE ] IE8 is out. I'm not exactly sure of all the features, though I have heard good things about it. It's just that newer versions are usually more secure.

I meant that adding the s to http didn't have an affect on the issue.

Actually, what zloth said was remove the "s" from "https" and use "http" instead.

But like you said, you're already using "http" (as am I), so that isn't the issue.

EDIT: Well, this is very interesting. Looks like zloth did know what he was talking about.

For some reason or another, when you click on "My Home", the browser adds the "s" to "http" and that seems to be causing the problem. Once this happens, just go back to your browser window and remove the "s" from "https" and everything should return to normal.

You're right, closing and reopening the brower *does* work! Thanks so much to whoever figured this out, it's been seriously annoying me for several weeks now.

Though I still don't understand why MS doesn't give you an option to tell it to just stop doing that!

EDIT: What I think is really funny is that since I put the CoH forum on my trusted sites list, when I try to go to "My Home" I get a message that asks:

"The current web page is trying to open a site in your trusted sites list. Do you want to allow it?"

I feel like emailing MS a definition of the word "trusted" every time I get that stupid message.

It's not a bug, it's a feature

No, seriously; the point of "https" is to put some security into an insecure network. Those pop-ups are supposed to pop-up when using "https".

My question is "what is causing the change from 'http' to 'https' when clicking on 'My Home'?"

My guess is that it's the website that is doing it, not IE. (This issue began a few months back, and my browser hasn't changed since then.)

Now, I'm not a network security expert, but I think that the reason this is happening is because the "My Home" section of the site is intended to be more secure than the rest of the site because that is where you can change your password, read your email, etc.

[/ QUOTE ]Yep, it's the website. You can see this by just hovering the mouse over the My Home link and looking at the status bar... it starts off with "https://".

@Finduilas,

"The current web page is trying to open a site in your trusted sites list. Do you want to allow it?"

[/ QUOTE ]This is an attempt to try to limit the ability of an untrusted site from being able to do things it's not supposed to be able to do by referencing a trusted site. I'd honestly never put any sites into the trusted list... there's just no reason.

You can avoid this situation by simply opening My Home/the new PM flag link in a new tab (Middle Mouse Button on every browser under the sun, except maybe IE), and then closing that tab when you're done with the stuff in it. Tabs ftw
