Need more Bandwidth?
Yeah, I'm gonna say "no".

I'm happy with my 15 down for $44 a month from Cox. Verizon has a history of reliability and quality of service issues in my area.
I'm stuck with U-Verse. But I'm ok with that, ANYTHING is better than Time Warner Cable.

How about 50Mbps down and 20 Mbps up? YUP! 50 DOWN! I think it is worth the measly $145 a month!

Good thing that's available to everyone. Oh, wait!

I've had a great experience with FIOS in my area, far better service than the other providers (where server would reguarly go down every weekend and evening). But, of course, that's entirely dependent on your area and how horrible their staff is.

I bet most of the issues people faced would be resolved if actual competition was allowed. One to three choices isn't real competition. For internet I have to choose between Time Warner Cable and U-Verse. Hooray for government sponsored (semi)monopolies!!!!!!!!!

Four letters long, and you managed to spell it wrong. It's FIOS.

Yep, duopoly is rarely any better than a monopoly... especially since they don't have to worry about getting in trouble with anti-trust laws when they try to screw over the customer...

Yup I got it wrong.. I thought it was fibre optic internet service. And Technically it is FiOS.
I'm not so much worried about throughput.
A measily $20/month bottom-tier DSL line has that.
What I'm unsure of with FIOS is latency.
Satellite has decent bandwidth. But I wouldn't try to game with it if you paid me.
Why? Multi-second (not millisecond) ping times. You think you get rubber banding bad NOW? Try playing when communications with the server are in the 1500-2000ms range JUST FOR THE FIRST HOP.
Granted, it's probably fine for FIOS. Most current wired tech is sufficiently low latency to the head-end. Just worry what happens during bandwidth aggregation (where they take all your traffic, bundle it up with everyone else's and push it out to the Greater Internet).

Go easy on him man. He's probably still broken up about what happened to Rawhide.
You Americans have no idea how lucky you are.
I have download caps.
I can seriously say that thing's look positively terrific for you folks in the States with a service that fast compared to what I have in NZ. As pointed out by Hyperstrike for gaming latency is a key consideration, but still!
I deal with 4Mb/s UP and 0.14Mb.s DOWN. Latency of first hop is 120ms. According to Speedtest.net North America has an average rating of 5.94Mb/s, so at least some of you don't know how good you've got it.
I'd be interested in this fabled 50Mb/s, but somehow I don't think they'll be in my area any time soon.

[/ QUOTE ]While playing HL2 on FiOS, I generally always have the lowest latency of anyone on any server I play on. But again, different areas might have different quality- I'm in one of the early areas that they rolled it out so I'd imagine the used the best equipment here.

Wait, you have a faster upload speed than download?
I know you're on the wrong side of the planet but...
(JOKING!)
Or did you get those mixed up and mean 4 Megabits download speeds (coming in to you) and .14 Megabits (143 Kilobits) upload speed (for you sending out)?

Reminds me of my Quake2 days. I was the first person signed up on a brand new loop from MediaOne (which eventually wound up as Comcast). For nearly three MONTHS, the only other node on the network with me was the head office. At the time, there was no capping. I had a full 30 Mbit pipe to myself (though I could only use 10 Mbits of it, as the ethernet port on the modem was only 10-BaseT.
And my GOD were my ping times low. I actually got booted from more than one server as an LPB because of it.
