AE Babies + Gold Farmers = ZOMG?

While searching for some cheap IO's Blueside I came across something that shocked me.

These prices!

Now, us normal players would never pay Two Hundred and Fourty-Three Million for an IO that normally sells around 10,000-100,000, and even those people who DO use the gold farmers wouldn't waste that much money on something so small and trivial. I mean, this was a level 25 Accuracy/Endurance Hold set, a cheap-o Uncommon set at that, it drops fairly regularly, it's not like Purples or the Must Have Uniques.

I checked the rest of this IO's level ranges, and none of them were selling for ungodly amounts; but the low ones were. The lvl21 was last sold for 6 Million (the other 4 were 10-500 or so) and the lvl20 was last sold for 5 Million (and the other 4 were 10-1000).

Cash strapped young players wouldn't pay that much for the uber-cheap; and veteran players who can play the market wouldn't touch paying near that amount for a cheap-o set. The only conclusion I can come to is that this is from someone who's just walked into the game, was PLed in the AE and is now a high level with no clue how to play, what does what, and so on. Years ago they were called Winter Lord Babies since it took only a few hours to go from 1-40 just kicking Frosty the Snowman; now AE is the easy way to 50, so I'm just calling them AE Babies (and I know I'm not the first to do so).

How would an AE Baby get so much cash? I seriously doubt that they were given that kind of cash from a veteran player (I've only given a million or so to players with no vet badges), and I've hit SPAM on my e-mail so many times I nearly know their prices by heart. Most of them advertise 100-200 Million Inf for X amount of dollars. The connection there is too easy to make.

Way back when City of Hero closed down their gold farmers started showing up en masse. Before there hadn't been too many or were that bothersome. When they all showed up Market prices went bonkers. The Must Have IOs suddenly went from a wallet stretching 50-60 million to 150 Million. My efforts at saving up enough to afford a Luck of the Gambler: +Rech in CoV went down the tubes (I never seem to be able to 'play' the market, so I just work with what I can get/sell through normal missions) when the farmers showed up. Merits are working better for me in that regard anyway; but this kind of stuff shocks me.

How can we help the new players not do this? I don't have any worry that the cheap-o Uncommon sets will skyrocket in price, but if this continues as things did when the Gold Farmers arrived it could mean trouble for anything above Uncommon. Maybe even Uncommon at that, I'm not sure.

Does anybody have any ideas?

That picture you took was just an influence transfer.Notice how zero are for sale that's what people look for when transferring influence/infamy.

Edit didn't notice Sweet on the 666! Now I don't wanna post anymore

Possible that they were trying to transfer money? It looked like it said 0 buying, 0 bidding, so maybe he was looking for something obscure so that he wouldn't accidentally give his inf to someone else?

Edit: Ninja'd. Grrrr

Double Edit: Also, Lucky, you have 666 posts now.

Within the last 5 sales, one sold for 20 influence.

Anyone can afford to buy for 20 influence. And if you can then actually flip for 200 million? Gold mine!

Yeah ok, influence transfer. The point is, if one of the recent prices was for 20 influence, you can put in a bid for say 2,000 influence and wait patiently and you will be rewarded. It may take days, but that's how the market works.

There was one left for sale, I got it 100K, that's why there's 0 in the picture.

And I hadn't thought of it being a transfer. That must be it.

DOOOM!

Or... like others have said... there is an alternative explanation.

While searching for posts to rage at, I came across something that shocked me.

These assumptions!

Now, us normal posters would never assume that the person is a noob and a farmer and a whole lot of other things, because even farmers and noobs have the sense not to waste two hundred and forty three million on a cheap-o Uncommon set.

I checked the other posts in this thread, and noone else arrived at the same arrrrggghevilfarmersgah conclusion that you did; but you still managed to.

Post-strapped young posters don't typically arrive at these biased conclusions; and veteran posters have the sense to realise that this topic has been beaten into the ground. The only conclusions I can come to is that this is someone who refused to look at the obvious rational explanation, preferring instead to further his or her own biases by blaming teh ebil farmerz.

How would a poster lack such sense? I seriously doubt someone hit them upside the head to cause that much brain damage, and I've hit so many people upside the head I nearly know the max jail time by heart.

Way back when AE arrived, the anti-farmer bias started showing up en masse. Before there hadn't been too many or were that bothersome. When they all showed up the boards went bonkers. The posts with SUBSTANCE suddenly went from few and far between to a complete non-existence. My efforts to reinvigorate the CoH/V boards went down the tubes. Shocking, etc.

How can we help the biased ones not come to these ridiculous and utterly absurd conclusions based on no evidence and thin assumptions? I don't have any worry that the trend will continue, but if this continues as things did when the ED dweebs arrived, it could mean trouble for the posters above "Legend". Maybe even Super-Powered at that, I'm not sure.

Does anyone have a freakin' clue?

Doom.

Yep.

This is really doom.

Maybe because they had no experience with the topic and couldn't possibly have known anything. Everyone has to learn sometime. The original poster even posted again and said "aha, I hadn't thought of that". Sounds like a rational, capable of learning human to me.

It's nice to know you have such love for others who haven't thought of every angle or option.

So I'm guessing you support the RMT people in selling their Inf and PL services, you probably wouldn't be defending them so if you didn't.

Something tells me that the RMT people don't need defending.

I've helped Winter Lord Babies understand the game better when I bumped into them in game, and I help those who ask me now. Those I try to help be better players; the RMT people. . .I don't see what can be defended about them.

I support the farmers who earn their Inf. RMT is not the issue at hand.

Everyone has a right to play how they want. If you don't like it, well, I really doubt they give a damn.

Given what you're likely to hear when you pass through Atlas or Cap, it's hard not to know something about that. And the RMTers keep dumping stuff in our in-game email boxes all the time.

And to be honest, I jumped to the same conclusion as he did at first. Sure, the transfer makes more sense, but... I'm sure we've all delt with enough stupid people that we can believe someone WOULD pay that much for those things. Especally if they don't know the game and are spending "easy" money.

Actually, he's talking about people PLed in AE, and then buying a ton of cash off of the RMT folks. From what I can see, he didn't say anything about farmers at all. And when a more reasonable answer was pointed out, he changed his mind about what he had seen.

Are you sure you're in the right argument?

Really? Then why did you jump down my throat? I never said anything against the normal farmer crowd. Unless you normal farmers are sending e-mails trying to sell it for real money. And RMTs were at hand when I had thought that the sale was done because of the RMT providing the funds.

If you REALLY want your mind blown go browse some low level training enhancements that nobody ever uses.

Anybody who wants to swap inf around without worrying about getting your transfer sniped, I highly recommend Fulmens. Service with a smile, and his rates have gone down since I engaged his services.

People just do that on the internet in general. This forum is no better than any other for the type of behavior, even though people would like you to think so. There are worse but there are still people who act that way and always will.

Because with the rates the RMTers charge, do you really think anyone would buy such a worthless IO for such Inf? That thing would've been, what, 60 bucks with their rates?

If someone did do that, they'd likely have a couple billion on that one character, and they'd likely have earned it themselves instead of buying it.

I jumped down your throat because you blamed a bunch of players for what you perceived as idiocy, without looking at all possible facets of the issue. Even if inf transfers didn't exist, you cannot sit there and claim even an AE noob would be stupid enough to pay that much for one enhancement without being completely sure it was the CoH/V equivalent of the Ultimate Bear Sword of +99 Awesomeness.
