Anything that can drop level 50 recipes has a chance to drop purples. They are just rare - I've had none drop for months, then got 3 in one (or two) missions, then nothing for a while.

They drop from defeated enemies that are level 47 and higher. [ As with all enemies, they must con green or higher in order to drop salvage/recipes, and not be underlings].

It is a normal random drop. Anything that can drop a normal level 50 recipe can drop a purple. That said it is very very rare. My 50 on test has 2 he has found but on live the same character has yet to find even one. ::sigh::

It's something like 1 per 2000 minions (= 1 per 667 bosses) based on numbers I vaguely remember, from Topdoc. And of course on teams, all drops get split between team members.

Yup, and all too often you find that it drops to the team member that contributed the least. I was on a mission that had a number of 50s, a 47, and a level 6 defender SKed to the 47.
.....Guess who got the only purple drop on that team?

Someone posted on the Wiki that the rate was 1 in 1500. As long as the foe cons green or better and meet the same requirements as being able to drop a level 50 recipe (thus, excluding pets, underlings, and summoned foes, e.g.).
Whether Purple drops follow the ranking weighting that other Pool A drops follow is, I think, open to debate still.

Nope. It's even been Dev certified that Dev-Choice missions do indeed drop Purples (when you chose drops over Tickets).

Techically, AE missions only drop tickets, but purples cannot be bought with tickets. And the devs have been adamant that purples will never be obtainable through any way but random drops.

This. And as Z stated, you need to select "drops" when doing DC arcs in order to benefit from this now, but it gets the same drop rate as standard missions. I've had a number of people ask me how I got purps to drop on my DC arc, even recently, so the drop effect is still in play AFAIK.

I have been playing my lvl 50 controller for a while now and nothing has dropped accept for regular invention recipes.
I switched toons last night to a lvl 50 brute for a SF, and BAM! first mission and drop is a purple.
So, how do purples drop? Is by missions type, mob lvl, or just plain random?
