White costumes and skin tone

So I enjoy oldschool superhero costumes. Simple, lots of usage out of the tights options and all that. I started playing CoH right away when the game came out and I've played off and on since then.

For YEARS now I've been baffled that I absolutely cannot make a character with a white face mask because for some reason some kind of skin tone bleeds through. It looks like crappily applied makeup. I don't know how else to describe it. Why is there no way to make a white face mask that matches white costumes?

I figured this fit more in suggestions than bugs.

I can't stand the color bleed-through on white masks either and have completely avoided using that color mask. I would love to see this fixed.

Also, good first post and welcome to City of Heroes.

I really killed my poor emp defender. I have a nice crimson and white costume, tights, some stripes, little starburst action going on with the cape... And wrap sunglasses. Because he looks like a complete moron with a white mask on.

Oh, and welcome to the forums you mean. *proudly wears his "Dedicated" veteran title*

The bleedthrough on the masks annoys me almost as much as the bleedthrough on the white "Tops with Skin" options...you would think someone would have fixed these by now, but no.

City of Heroes taught me that when the world is burning, you don't just stand by and watch, you grab a fire extinguisher and do whatever you can to stop it-even if it's not much at all. Sign the petition to keep City of Heroes alive HERE.

Great first post.

Yes please fix.

IIRC, it happens with any light color, specifically because of how the color to those tops is applied. It's just easier to note with white because of that specific interaction (and happens with a pretty solid variety of those whites as well).

I'd like to see them fix it, but I'm sort of curious what it would entail.

I'd believe you but, if I remember correctly, even if you choose a different skin color the same generic skin tone comes through light colored masks and tops with skin. I'd check but the servers are down FOR FOREVER. (C'mon guys...hurry up heh)

I've got a lot of characters who need white tights, but white tights + half of the skin tones looks naked.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

Yeah I have to agree, right now I'm playing a "white skinned" alien girl, whose white skin is kinda... yeah, tinted. :/

I've a dark-skinned chica that wears a white shirt, and it comes through looking sort of brownish. It's mostly due to the fact that (iirc) the color is being applied as a tinting layer over the base (which is why with Tops with Skins, you're only allowed one color - the 'skin' part inherits the primary color from the Skin sidebar, and applies the 'top' portion as a layer over that). With the way they've talked about how some of the colors work in-game, it looks like that specific category assumes that Color Brightness = Opacity for those selections, and thus with the brighter colors the layer underneath bleeds through.

Or I'm not understanding it right, and Jay and/or BaBs (or someone who remembers them talking about it) will come bop me over the head, and be all 'Nooo, Foxy. That's not how it works!' and I'll be all 'Oh. Well, okay!' when they explain how it does work. << As I'm just assuming.

[/ QUOTE ]Multiplicative blending (simplified: Black{0.0} * anything = Transparent Black; White{1.0} * anything = anything; Gray{0.5} * anything = Translucent anything / 2)

The alternative is additive blending (Black + anything = anything; White + anything = Solid White; Gray + anything = something between anything and Solid White)

Since costume pieces don't make you invisible, they can't be solely multiplicative, though I don't pretend to know exactly how the colors are calculated. (My multiplicative vs. additive comparison is also simplified; there's usually more that goes into each than that, especially with regard to how the overlaps occur)

That makes some sense, though the math hurts my head.

Just think of Red, Green, Blue, and Alpha as being numbers between 0 and 1 (0 = none, 1 = full). Combine the RGB to get the color just like you did in first grade art class, and then Alpha is how solid the color is

QR: All i want is WHITE skin. I mean really white. Ghost Widow-white. WHITE!!! Not white with tan shading!!

Although white masks would rock, too. Since we just got some new faces, I'd like to see the Mask file updated too, with some NEW masks with texture to them - think Jester mask. Masks with texture you can actually make white and have them show up.

More masks, please!

Oh goodness YES! Fix those stupid white masks! They irritate the crud out of me!

There isn't any "bleed-through," it's just really aggressive shading. Here's a thought experiment - pick a trenchcoat and make it pure white. Now watch how it looks as though it's dirty or dusty. That's because it's very heavily shaded, as people were I guess expected to want them all black. Skin is shaded in many places with a brownish tinge, and when you apply lighter colours over it, they get shaded with the same brownish tinge. Darker colours generally hide the shading because their base is darker and their shading ends up just being black and melding with the colour itself, but white and other bright materials are shaded with an odd tinge.

Personally, I'm convinced we need a better technology than "bare torso with pattern" for tights with skin and even tights, a technology that allows for the blending of two textures over the same mesh, rather than just a uni-colour pattern over a base texture. It may even allow for tights with skin and tattoos, or non-human skin textures and tights and so on. After all, notice how masks over faces still show your eyebrows and ear canals? They shouldn't.

Well even if the issue is aggressive shading... white should not have a pink/brown tint.

I would love to have my costume pieces actually be opaque where they're meant to be. Hopefully the color issues are being addressed with the whole power colorization thing, I'm crossing my fingers but not holding my breath.

I can't see it taking much work at all. All that should need to be done is create a bump map for each pattern/mask. The Tanker chest option for Males has a bump map (No, I haven't pigg-dived, it's obvious if you've ever done any 3D modeling at all), and you can make it white with no problem. But the Tanker option for Females' Tops with Skin still has no bump map, so we're left with the wet t-shirt look, minus nipples.

There are some Tops with Skin options that have obvious bump maps (Metal, Leather, and the various Plus options come to mind), would it really be that hard to add a simple bump map to the rest of the Tops with Skin options and the Full Masks/Face options? I could probably do it for them if they send me the patterns/masks, then it's just a matter of changing the code to enable the bump map (which I'm guessing is a variable in each piece's code).

Well the issue there is, they HAVE been upgrading some of the older sets.

And every time they do, people throw a hissy fit. It's like clockwork. Remember the hair? Ogod I remember the hair.

A simple bump map would do nothing but make the colors work right. The only people it would anger are the people using white to make naked-looking toons.
