Why do Untimed Missions keep failing?
The mission could have been a 'prevent boss from escaping' and somehow the boss got activated

Where there any mission objectives? Like Don't Let So-and-so escape? Or don't let So-and-so die? Or don't kill So-and-so? Etc.
Obviously the game didn't want mayo on that sammich.
Can you be more specific about the contact and exact mission?
One posibility could be that one of the objectives was to keep the hero from escaping. While you were afk, he may have escaped. Who is your contact and what was the mission name?
It was Defeat Selestar and Guards
This happened a couple of days ago on another Mission that was do not let so and so Escape. Never got to them and the mission failed without a timer as well.
If there is a hidden timer for the time allowed then they need to say you have X time before he escapes.

According to your link, you had to prevent him from escaping. Apparently you took too long to get to him and he got away from you. There isn't a visible timer for any of the "runner" objectives, either, so you've gotta hustle and find 'em quickly.

Then they should just make them timed missions IMO. Well I know in the future Escape == timed.

Currently there is a bug with the 'flee when near defeat' scripts. The boss is running as soon as he detects you (before you even target, let alone damage him), and his detection range is HUGE.
The boss might detect you when you enter the first floor of a multi floor map, and book for the elevators on the floor he's on. When he reaches the elevators YOU FAIL!

But it can't be timed. The mission failure depends on whether the target gets to the door, and you can slow down, distract or defeat them.

I was in the third fight at the beginning of the mission. How did he make it to the door to escape if it wasn't timed?

because he ran past you to the door...
and if I remember right, they don't even have to make it to the front door, an elevator or any door they can interact with counts as an exit.

No, I never got to an area where he was. Either the missions have a hidden timer or something is just wrong with the misison mechanic.
this was a Tsoo tunnel map, there is no door other than the mission entrance.

He ran past you while you got up to get a sandwich.
No he didn't. I was at the entrance of the mission map. there were 3 sets of mobs directly ahead. Into the third fight it failed.
Nothing was at the mission entrance or it would have failed before I even got back.

No, Inokis you're missing the part where *the aggro range exceeded your visibility*.
Some missions are like that.
In fact the old Cape mission (ooooold) was bugged so that the item you're supposed to be protecting would basically start getting hit the MOMENT you entered the mission. Since it was (at that point) a 2 or 3 level mission map, you might get through the first couple mobs before you get kicked out Failed.
Just because you weren't there to see the Boss run by, doesn't mean he didn't do it - he was the mission objective, therefore if you ignore him long enough he'll do exactly what he did: escape. It wasn't on a timer. It was merely that he NOTICED you coming into the mission, and his actions were triggered by that alone. You didn't need to start a fight or even be in the same room with him, for this to happen.

Running bosses are unpredictable.
I just took a mission to assassinate a hero. I went afk to get some food and do the mission while eating.
After about the third mob fight the mission kicks me out with a fail.
There was no mission timer and no reason why it should have.
