What do people do in RP? I see so many people talking about them but i still don't really know what they do. Do they like really get into there toons and always talk like a hero or something like that?

They pretend to be someone they're not.

As a random aside I wish the ignore feature totally disabled seeing threads by people you've ignored.

Exactly.

In college, I took an acting class. It was by far the most fun class I ever took. Throwing yourself into a role and pretending you're someone else is very liberating and fun. I also made the standard rounds with AD&D (good ol' pencil-and-paper RPGs).

When you think about it, playing the game as a true RPG is really the way to go. People complain about there not being enough to do in the game. When you play it as a true RPG, there's always something to do, as every RP session is necessarily different.

Give it a try sometime. You don't even have to dive all the way in. There are plenty of "light" RP groups out there where people are in RP mode part of the time but still go out of character (commonly denoted by ((double parentheses)) or the letters OOC) to handle the mechanics of playing the game.

Some people are into "ERP," or Erotic Role-Playing. I don't go for that, I think it's kind of silly. If you're offended by that, you might want to make sure you have something in your biography like, "NOT an ERP player!" just to hopefully cut off potential problems before they start.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.

We (The Stoned Templars) had 2 members who told us they were female and even went out of their way to maintain that "sex" in pretty much everything they did and said. Of course...they were "lesbian". *rolls eyes*

It wasnt until we added Vent and invited them that we came to the conclusion that they were both dudes. They both declined to use Vent every time we asked them to join it.

From that point on...I just assume punch RPers in the face. They're useless if you ask me. Dudes RPing as chicks......get a life. Seriously.

That's painting with a pretty broad brush, isn't it?

Light RP can be a lot of fun. We have a regular TF team on Saturday where the leader pretty much stays in character throughout, so I try to do the same. We talk about how Sister Psyche has enlisted our aid, etc.

Assuming that *all* female RPers are "dudes" is flat out wrong. I'm female, all my characters are female, and I RP as female.

So try not to overgeneralize, mmkay?

They were males pretending to be females. Not the other way around. I really doubt too many females pretend to be males while RPing, but since I'm not a RPer, I could be way off base in my assumption.

My guess is there are A LOT of guys running around pretending to be female. Those are the people I wonder about.

If you're wearing those shoes, then I feel really sorry for you. If you dont, good for you and enjoy your RP. mmmkay?

I don't get the entire "RP" thing anyways. You're playing a video game...and its not exactly text based. So I guess I'm missing the part where RP can be "fun".

So, just from your experience with those two people, you've formed the conclusion that all RPers suck?

What if they really were girls and just didn't want to broadcast that to people? What if they really were guys and just didn't want to use vent?

So we're useless, but at least we (usually) stay away from non-RPers or, if we team with non-RPers, we don't force RP on them. We don't go around saying that PvPers/farmers/PvEers are useless (At least I don't).

It's our $15 a month, let us spend it on what we want. If you can't respect that, you should just leave.

So what?

And to be honest, I kinda believe everyone is a guy on here unless I can confirm otherwise via Vent or some other method. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

The funny thing is...they were both excellant players. Its just a shame they had to RP and pretend they were someone else to enjoy the game. They werent brought in because they were female...they were added because they were good players...so I'll nip that in the bud before someone even goes there.

I do some light RP in character, nothing as complex as some who hang out in pocket D talking about their characters life stories all night.

But for me Light RP is saying stuff in character every now and then. For example, My Villain the Communist Threat always refers to our enemies on teams as "Capitalist dogs". Light RP can be fun, and i've never got a bad reaction from saying something in character.

Basically, for me its another way to have fun in the game

But there's a time to roll play and there's a time to be honest with those who spend a great amount of time helping you. We spent countless hours lvling, helping, instructing them on builds, tfs, ect and we didnt get the respect to know "who" these people were.

So yes, I formed an opinion about RPers in general. Get over it.

There are many different ways to RP. You can do so just by making choices not related to XP, difficulty, or powers for your character (he/she/it really hates the COT, was wronged by Crey, etc. so you pick those missions more often than not.) You can limit it to writing (and being reasonably faithful to) a bio. You can go "all out" into the character's personality, the way they speak (or don't,) how they react to other players ("You raise the dead? You'd better hope I don't see you in a dark alley, or I'll make sure you join them!") You can do so in-game or out of game (writing with a group, for instance.)

There's no one or two ways to "do" RP.

You said you don't "get" RP. I just pointed out that others don't "get" why others find different activities fun, either. I made no judgment about you "missing where RP can be fun."

Unwad the undies and, in your own words, get over it.

Sure, it's your opinion, and you are entitled to hold it. But you shared it with us in a public forum and you kinda have to expect that some of us are going to disagree with it. If you didn't want our comments, then don't post.

What difference is it that someone wants to pretend to be someone else in a Massively Multiplayer Role Playing Game? You already agreed that they were good players, so what harm did it do your own playtime experience to think (and truly by your own tale, you never actually confirmed) that they were playing someone they really weren't?

Of course, I guess you are actually a big brawny guy with a sword or can really shoot fire from your fingertips or something, right? Oh wait, you aren't? Then aren't you pretending to be something you aren't, as well?

OP's original question was to ask what was RP anyway - not a poll to take opinions about how many "dudes" are playing females out there....

I have male toons and female toons, so does my partner. In fact one of her favorite toons for light RP is an AR/DEv blaster called Corporal Numpty, a hard nosed cigar smoking military guy. In missions she speaks in bad movie cliches, its fun and doesnt hurt anyone. It gets more thana few lols from teammates.

If anyone asks us who we are IRL we dont lie though.

Screenshot of our military toons from the city scoop a while back in my article on military uniforms. And yes, my toons the gal.

Just a quick point on this as well - this is the internet, and as you already pointed out - it's a video game.

How sure are you that you "know" anyone in your SG that you haven't met face-to-face and hung out with? Anyone you meet over the internets could also be a serial killer, but heaven forbid, they be someone male pretending to be female, because that's just such a foreign concept and so radically different from being male.

Obviously, I'm not going to convince you to change your position on males RPing being female, but lol at the concept that they were somehow cheating you from getting to "know" them.

I'll answer this just because it deals with our SG more than it does with RPing....

Our SG has 5 members and in the top 75 SGs on champion. We're very active and play a ton. 3 of us talk via the phone while we play at times.

So that's how "know" about the rest of our SG and that's why we're perfectly fine keeping the SG small. I rather have 5 guys who I know than 50 who pretend to be someone they arnt.

Im just saying the problem might not be with RPers, but with your ideas about gender and sexuality. It sounds like just the idea of guys playing gals weirds you out thats all.

This reminds me of a story I heard someone tell me about in Everquest:

A girl in the guild was friends with everyone. She was a bit of a drama queen and a flirt. When she had an issue with her boyfriend she would confide in guild mates and such. Talk about her life as anyone casually does in a guild to those they are friends with. One day she decided to quit and told everybody they had a confession before they cancelled their sub, that they were actually a guy and they didn't feel right leaving without making it known who they really were. Needless to say, all the guys she had flirted with in the guild felt rather disgusted...

Roleplaying is one thing, passing yourself off as something you're not with the intent of deception is wrong imo.

Yeah, that's not cool. I had a friend who did that in EQ or an early MMO. He used to get gifted tons of stuff, he even had his GF do vent for him when needed.

Needless to say it didn't impress me at all.

You're on target now....guys playing girls DOES weird me out as it should a lot of people. Whats the point? I just dont get it.

I wouldnt have a problem with a RPer in general. Lord knows, I prolly team with a lot of them not knowing. But they surely dont come across as "females" being dudes and if they do have a female toon, I know its a male behind the screen because they had enough respect to tell me up front.

These 2 people led the 5 of us on (even my girlfriend) to believe they were female. That's just wrong on so many levels its......just......gross.
