forum question

Before I start let me say I am not new to the forums or the game, so any of you in a bad mood today should have no reason to denote me to a lower fourm I.Q. in your or anybody else's opinion. Now on to my question, I am not the best at forum-ese so I dont have the best understainding of all the abbreviations used here. So far I have figgured out <QR> as quick reply and IMO/IMHO as in my opinion/in my honest opinion (got the latter of the two/three just five or so minutes before posting this. So can anyone help me with this.

Another unrelated question is it considered bad if you make multiple threads if you have multiple unrelated questions, or should you post them all in one long post that is a solid wall of text.

For all help I am thankful and sorry if I am long-winded.

:Edit: A third question is how do you add a link to a specific post of someone elses that you want in your sig?

1. Always consult the wiki.

2. It depends on how related they are, how long they are, how relevant they are to where you're posting, etc. Don't cross post, but other than that, honestly use your own judgement. Some people, for instance, put "consolidated wish list / idea" threads up, but if they warrant longer explanations - break those out.

3. Search. If you want to link to a specific post in a thread, such as your original post, make sure your link looks like:

http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showf...umber=13634846

See the "&number=" part? Compare that to the number RIGHT under your thread title - the number on this reply will be different. That will take you to the specific post.

There are actually a few guides for in AND out of game abbreviations. Look in this section of the Guide to Guides, under "UNDERSTANDING ONE ANOTHER".

As long as it's in moderation, like just a couple questions a day, there's no problem with doing multiple threads. If you're going at ask a LOT of questions, then it might be best to post them all in the same thread.

The best way I've found is to click on their name, to bring up their profile, then there is a link on the bottom of their profile that says "Show all user's posts". Click that and then scan for the one that you want, then copy the url. If the URL is too long to fit in your signature, you can always paste the URL into TinyURL to save space.

Actually, I've never had any luck with that, it seems unreliable and only tends to show the PAGE. What I HAVE had luck with is the following:

https://boards.cityofheroes.com/show...ue#PostYYYYYYY

Where the Xs are the Original Poster's post number that started the whole thread, and the Ys are the post number of the post you actually want to SEE. It'll take you right to it, every time.

works as well. for instance:

https://boards.cityofheroes.com/show...0#Post13635050
is a link to Bill's post. That way you don't have to figure out two different post numbers.

Wall of text is bad. But most questions only need a sentence or two so having several in one post is fine. Keep in mind though, a few subjects have their own forum sections. If you have a question about badges and a question about crashing, you'd be better off posting one in 'Badges and Gladiators' and the other in 'Technical Issues and Bugs', rather than putting both together in 'Player Questions'.

Changing showflat.php to showthreaded.php will link directly to a single post, but you won't see the rest of the thread without clicking the links.

It's always been 'humble opinion' on any board I've ever posted on, too. If your posting an opinion, one would usually assume that it's an 'honest' opinion, so IMHO would just be redundant in that case. A 'humble' opinion is one that's a little more of a 'no brag, just fact' type of thing. At least, IMHO.

I want to say he's making a joke about how opinions are usually not so humble, but I can't speak for him.

Ah, I see. Personally, I've never felt the need to elaborate on the status of my opinion. It's my opinion - it's honest by default and my opinions are never humble by nature.

The idiom which people usually say aloud is "In my humble opinion,...." That is the more likely reference to IMHO. That's what it meant back in the days of Compuserve forums before 'The Web' even existed.

Also, there's IMNSHO, which doesn't make sense if the 'H' stands for 'honest.'

"In my humble opinion" - 1.3 million hits
"In my honest opinion" - 0.1 million hits

"in my not so humble opinion" - 96,300 hits
"in my not so honest opinion" - 148 hits

INMSHO - 121,000 hits

This thread is the first time I've EVER seen the "H" referenced as "honest". Every online experience I've had since '97, the "H" has been "humble".

"in my not so honest opinion" just doesn't make any sense at all.
