We need to pull a mob out of that mob of mob mobs.
(We need to lure a critter out of that group of mafioso kangaroos.)

What is a mod-mob then?

i actually agree with you part. I am well aware that the term originated in muds and meant a mobile enemy, but you know, it is generally a term used to describe a group, so real world to mmo conversion can be annoying, if not actually difficult. yeah spawns is generally accepted, but it seems immersion breaking to make that kind of a naked appeal to game mechanics.

Go with "[name of group]" then, it's not a bad workaround. "There's a lot of Council up there, be careful!" "Carnie patrol coming!"

Or heck, just "group". Hard to fault that one.

For singles, "that guy/girl", or "enemy".

I never understood the use of 'mob' for a single foe.

Main Entry: mob
Pronunciation: \mäb\
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin mobile vulgus vacillating crowd
Date: 1688

1: A large or disorderly crowd ; especially : one bent on riotous or destructive action.
2: The lower classes of a community : masses, rabble.
3: Chiefly Australian : a flock, drove, or herd of animals.
4: A criminal set : gang ; especially often capitalized : mafia.
5: Chiefly British : a group of people : crowd.

More than one mob gets you mobs.

Same...why overcomplicate things.

I like "baddies" also.

I use 'foe/foes' for simplicity.

I believe 'mob' is just too confusing because of multiple meanings.

Even for the MMO Illuminati who use mob ' ' correctly ' ', what do you think is meant by 'a mob boss'? A boss level mobile object? Or a boss who's part of the Family faction?

Are the immobile snipers not mobs since they're not mobile?

And when our own Devs, some of whom come from the old MUD/EQ world don't use 'mob' to mean 'mobile object', well that should tell you something about the efficacy of that term.

And so, I, too, think 'mob' should be defecated.

What? It's not an 'f'?

This has been the common usage long before online gaming came around. Folks, whatever you do, don't refer to a single person as a "mob" outside of computer gaming.

Mob = 1 enemy unit
Mobs or Spawn or Group = multiple enemy units
Critter = 1 Non-attacking/Non-attackable pet unit (i.e. a Kitty Cat that follows your toon around OR found wandering around a map )

Which, honestly, all sounds so non-intuative to someone who's never played an MMO before...even many people who have played a few before.

The only one of those that is correct usage in the English language, according to Merriam-Webster, is the "Spawn or Group". I can see why many people get confused, when in hectic situations.

I feel that this is a 'live and let live' situation.

Shrug. The new MMO player can either learn the terminology or you can confuse the existing player base. I think the former is preferable.

Uhhh.... no. They other way around.

Mob comes from the vulgate Latin mobile, which means '(the) movable (ones)'. That is, a crowd easily swayed into action, just fickle commoners.

Then the word 'mob' gets applied to the 'gang' controlled by organized crime. The -ster suffixed gets applied to make the word even more derogatory.

I find it good practice to avoid using terms which either have no meaning, or have a different meaning in the real world. In this case, "mob" used to refer to a single person when the actual word in the language is used to refer to multiple people. Or the Mafia. The old phase "a mob of Mob mobs" is a good, albeit manufactured example of why this can be problematic.

"Toon," on the other hand, is just irritating.
