The good folks in this forum have raised some pretty damn good points, so...well, this is just my personal two cents. I used to play World of Warcraft, and I think City of Heroes/Villains is better. But there's a few things I liked in WoW that we don't have here.

[u]PROS[u]

- Sidekick System: CoH is a lot better for casual gaming. Levels aren't a barrier to teaming. I can grab my Level 50 main and group with a Level 11 friend who's just started the game. That's huge. In terms of regular gameplay, it makes forming teams a lot easier.

- Costume System: The costume system is AMAZING. You can change your character's height, body shape, facial features. You can make a robot, a mutant, a werewolf, anything you can imagine.

- Better 'Gear' System: Most folks say CoH has no gear. That's true. But we DO have enhancements and crafting. 'Inventions'. They don't change your physical appearance, but they do affect your powers.

Now... if you like that sorta thing, you CAN invest a lot of cash in your characters to fit 'em out with epic bonuses and whatnot. You can turn your character into a small god if you spend enough on your build.

BUT. Here's the thing. If you DON'T like to do that, if you DON'T like constantly spending and crafting upgrades - you don't have to. You can just grab standard enhancements, make a simple build, and boogie. That's perfectly acceptable, and other players won't criticise you or anything. Regular builds are totally cool.

Bottom line. In WoW, upgrading your gear all the time is mandatory. In CoH, it's optional.

[u]CONS[u]

- Variety of Gameplay: CoH is basically a combat game. Well, yeah, so's WoW. But there's non-combat quests in WoW. Crafting and recipes can be pretty fun. I loved to craft in WoW. CoH...enh, no. Gameplay in CoH is just about beating stuff up. CoH does have some unique and interesting encounters, some really awesome special boss fights - but most of it is the same.

- PvP: While PvP isn't really my thing, I do acknowledge that WoW PvP is a lot better than CoH's. WoW has more kinds of PvP, it's got battlegrounds with objectives and stuff. PvP in CoH has never really been that great.

Hi guys,

I'm a new player to city of heroes and i like to know if the game is any good? can it keep me going for the next few years.

[/ QUOTE ]

I started playing this game nearly 5 years ago, and my main account hasn't been inactive for more than a couple of days during that time. My household has FOUR accounts total, two of which are active at all times.

Yeah, it's enough to "keep you going" for a few years.

I've been playing for about five years too. I stay mostly because I like comics and I like to pretend to fly and have superpowers.

I'd recommend not rushing through the content. Take your time, chat with teammates a little, read the mission text when you do missions.

Notes for heroes starting out. (similar concepts apply to villains):
You can travel to other maps by going through the gates along the edges of the map or by boarding the elevated trains (marked with a "T" on you map). Train stations have an ENTRANCE and an EXIT. If you are standing at the exit of a train, you will not be able to board the train. Most players experience this when they are new.

Virtue and Freedom servers usually have the most people playing.
If you get on a bad or rude team, politely excuse yourself and find a good team.

press the "M" on your keyboard to view your map. If you are on a team, you can see your teammates if they are on the same map.

Trial accounts now have some limitations but you can still get a good impression of how the game works.

Run the tutorial when you create your first character. It will introduce you to some of the basic game elements. After the tutorial, most players go to Atlas park. If you want to be alone, then go to Galaxy city instead. Atlas and Galaxy are the two lowest level zones

Players often start off by doing a few missions to get to level 2 or 3 and then join a sewer team in Atlas park until level 5 or 7.
Once you reach level 5 your team may want to move to King's row to do radio missions and the bank mission which will give you a temporary flying power. Kings Row, and the Hollows are good for level 5-10. Perez Park becomes available at level 7

If you enjoy teaming, you might want to join an active supergoup. Don't be afraid to try a few different Supergoups until you find one that is a good fit. Some are very active, some are completely inactive and there are all kinds of personality types involved.

Well, I've rambled enough. You'll find lots of helpful tips in the GUIDES section of this forum. Welcome to the game.

Welcome to CoH I only skimed over the others post but looks like they put a great amount of starter material here. The fact that you came onto the forums is a great first step as you will almost always get any help you ask for. The only thing I would add is after you choose a server come back here and post it so you can be advised on what the active global channels are. They are great for finding teams and tf's and meeting friends in the game.

Also want to note some servers are "know" for things like Freedom (called freedumb sometimes) is known for being the most populated server, Virture for being the Role Playing server, Justice for being a community oriented one that has alot of powergamers, Pinicle is the drunk server etc.

This game has some great people in it I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

If you wind up on Justice (my server), which happens to be the best in my biased opinion , be sure to introduce yourself on the Justice boards and you will get a very warm welcome.

(as a note to those who have seen some of my posts I happen to love this game and that is why I have been so damn vocal about the recent stuff)

Many of us vocal posters are extremely passionate about this game. I hate this game because it has killed my interest in all my other games for 5 years now.

This game is very friendly for the casual player.

Jump in, do a mission, or hang around, join a pick-up mission team for a hour, or less, or whatever.

Or, ready to do a caffeine/sugar/hot-pocket fuelled 20hr gaming day marathon? Do it! You'll find someone to join you. Task Forces/Strike Forces and trials can make a lot of a fun day.

Supergroups (guilds, in other words) can range from incredibly casual to incredibly strict, so find one that works for you. Or don't join one. Some heroes and villains aren't the supergroup type. Or start your own! (Minimum level 10 required). Supergroups will take as much time and effort as you are willing to put into them.

If you find yourself stuck, or frustrated, or have a question, I'd first suggest you ask it in the help channel. For example,

/hc How do I get a cape?

These forums are a friendly source of information, but please do a search or two, because your question may have already been answered!

Also, www.paragonwiki.com is a great source of information. The rumour is, the development staff use it as a reference!

Father Xmas reminded me :

One huge difference between CoH and CoV is the Safeguard vs. the Mayhem.

Safeguard missions, you want to rush the bank. Get there fast, and defeat the villains fast, because if they get away, you lose (they have a marked getaway vehicle on the map, once they grab the loot). You can fly all you want here.

Mayhem missions, do NOT rush the bank, as these missions have various spawn-wires (not real wires, of course, just what I call them) that spawn homing ambushes of Longbow. If you fly too high, you can trip spawn-wires that spawn flying longbow (Also known as the LEDS - Longbow Eagle Death Squads). If you rush to the bank (entering it spawns one or two ambushes itself) you can have several ambushes hit you at once inside the bank while you are fighting security. Also, stop and destroy the roses. Anything destructable can get you more time. The larger the team, the more you have to destroy for the bonus. Several items, solo, will give a time bonus after 1 is destroyed. But it always takes a lot of parking meters to get the time bonus, even solo

The impressive gameworld is 99% irrelevant as soon as you can fly (level 14), as missions put a destination marker on your map to travel to - just ignore everything and fly straight there. Hop into the bland, randomly-generated maze portal and wack the bad guy. Done. Fly back to your contact and do it again.

[/ QUOTE ]
Wait. So you admit the gameworld is impressive but it's irrelevant because of the playstyle *YOU CHOOSE* and this is a shortcoming of the GAME?

Dumple is right. This guy didn't even give the game 12 hours. Good riddance as far as I'm concerned.

Funny that he decided he didn't like it by level 5. Makes me wonder how he managed to get so far in WoW.

So tell me the pros and cons from the game and if you could suggest me the game.

Thanks

Is the game any good?
Why even ask?
I'm not attacking you so relax. The point is: People are different. My sister bought CoH back when it first came out, and got me a copy. She also got my brother into playing. Many of her friends in CoH jumped to EQ2 and she followed them. They all hated it and switched to to WoW. They all loved it.

My brother tried Wow for about 6 months and returned back to CoH. Then he left CoH and tried Guild Wars. He stuck with GuildWars.

I've tried both Wow and guild wars. Couple months for each. I just couldn't get into either of them. Does that mean I would call them bad games? Nope. They must be good games because they have huge player bases and make a profit.

They just are not games suitable to my tastes. CoH does play differently from either of them, and I'm sure it plays differently from many other MMOs. The feel of the game is different.

There's a chance that this game is not for you. Yet, there is a chance this game is totally for you. You'd have to play to find out.

As others have pointed out in this thread, you most certainly do not have to get all the toys and such. I have several level 50 characters. Some I have totally IO'd out (IO = Invention Origin enhancements) with special Set Bonuses. Most I have not and I have no intention too.

However, you'll be pleased to know that if you should choose to IO Set Bonus a character out, you will not have to work on maintaining it. The stuff does not degrade or take damage and become less effective. Once you got them, you keep them as long as you want them.

There is no end game content. But then I've never seen anyone adequately explain just what is End Game Content, and why is it important? Personally, I can't imaging the relevance of 'End Game Content'

Somethings to keep in mind:
The servers are generally listed from least populated at the top and most populated at the bottom. By population I don't mean the number of Players who play there, but the number of players who are currently logged in. Freedom is very consistently the most populated server. Personally, too much population = lag fest. For others with great rigs this is so not a problem.

I find Infinity (fairly consistently the third most populated server) to be a decent trade off of population over lag.

Regarding AE, (a.k.a. Mission Architect) it is not all there is to the game. Even though most of your teaming experience just might seem that way. AE is a recent addition to the game which, much to the Devs dismay, turned into a major farm factory. The Devs are working on making changes to try and find a suitable balance between AE and the rest of the game.

Edit:
Oh, and one more thing, welcome to the game. I hope you enjoy it!
