Here's a nice dead horse to beat the stick with.

You all have become tender little morsels of writhing wormwood. Soft. Soft. Sofly crying about your exposure to "bad pugs" ... or worse! "Rookery threads"! Is that the best you have? Spitting vile against harmless self-contained "fluff". Find a worthwhile target. There's nothing wrong with the daily existance of Rookery. There's something wrong with the distinct lack of everything else in terms of volume.

Now I'm not talking about being better at being mean. Not talking about being better at being inciteful. Not talking about being a better troll. No. I am talking about the air in these forums reeks of incompetent angst. This town deserves a better class of criminal.

Until then, you're all fired. <grin>

[/ QUOTE ]

I remember when this forum had a better class of criminal. It was an utterly repellent place that drove off a ton of really good, worthwhile people who had interesting things to post about. Not what I'd call an upgrade to the relatively bland but harmless stuff going on now.

[/ QUOTE ]

It was actually a lot more interesting then. Mostly because we had really interesting things to post about. These days? Not so much.

Bland and harmless is about as interesting as wonderbread and mayo sandwiches.

I'm going to retch at the thought of that now.

[/ QUOTE ]

Not buying it. I've been around at least as long as you have, maybe longer, and I don't remember this golden age of interesting subject matter. Unless of course what one finds interesting is flame wars over who godmoded who, which Gemini Park RPers are snobs and which aren't, whether or not the D sucks, etc etc. If that qualifies as interesting, then I guess you're right. But I don't think it does.

The nice thing about wonderbread and mayo sandwiches is they're pretty harmless if I choose not to eat them. Metaphorically speaking, of course.

Having said that, I'll concede that Ara and I may be talking about totally different things, so she and I may not disagree as much as I'd initially thought.

Also, skip using mayo in chicken salad and tuna sandwiches. Low fat ranch dressing is tastier and marginally healthier.

Actually, y'know what? We get these threads periodically complaining about how there's nothing of substance on this board. How about you guys who like to complain actually try posting something of substance? Rather than posting QQ about it, put your money where your mouth is and actually contribute positively to the community, with something other than complaints. Because y'know, this past week we've seen two event postings (the Dawn Patrol anniversary shindig and the SG recruitment fair) that none of the usual complainers posted anything to, despite these clearly being content posts that contributed something to the community. You want to complain? Step up and be part of the solution.

Hey, we had some substance in the Rookery today. Don't go knockin' my attempts to proselytize.

Potentially fair point. I actually don't read the Rookery threads, or most of the other fluff threads on this forum. I just don't object to their existence, or buy into the idea that flame threads are more valuable. Like I said, the wonderbread and mayo sammiches don't hurt me if I don't eat them, and that's OK by me.

Golden Age might be putting it too much. But at least occasionally one would find threads about interesting scientific developments.

In other words, threads in (my idealized version of the past) weren't just saccharine. Y'know, we'd all pretend the internet was srss bsnss.

The good stuff has long since been drowned out. HEROID and Glory keep some fiction going if my casual perusal serves me well enough. Interesting you choose the meaning of "good stuff" to be whine threads about cliques, pocket D, flamewars etc. when really all it has ever meant is partaking in a little collaborative fiction, reading of said fiction posts thus fleshing out peoples characters in ways the game simply doesn't allow or organising and running events that may or may not have had some meaning to someone, somewhere beyond rofls, lulz or titters.

YMMV, whatever.

There comes a point where raging all over your keyboard becomes a waste of time, and long since has that moment passed by. The old guard has been replaced. The cycle begins anew.

Honestly? Collaborative fiction and fan fiction always make my teeth ache. That going away doesn't sadden me in the least.

Frankly, the content of the forum will shift over time, and probably go full circle in time.

Yeah, it's great when you basically get told "Oh, the forum rules only apply to that forum when we feel like it."

In other words, don't bother trying to organize anything Virtue based on the virtue server, it's better to just use some other communication source.

Personally, I found that at least the fiction was an honest productive effort on the part of the characters.

Not saying it wasn't, just was never my thing. I've written some myself, over the years, and could never really get into it.
