Why do I still think of this when people use that word?

Dear Og, I haven't thought of that in YEARS! The trauma resides.

Okay, don't have pics right now. Describe it though.
Will post pics so you know it happened.

Main System:
C2Q 2.5 Ghz 8GB RAM, GTX260, XP-64
Dell 24" LCD, Dell 20" LCD

Domain Controller:
P4 1.8Ghz, 1GB RAM, GeForce3 bench tester, Server 2K3 SBS

Web Server:
P4 3Ghz 2GB RAM, 1U Rackmount

Shared Monitor: 21" Dell CRT on a 2 port KVM

320GB NAS device

Compaq open rack

Network Equipment:
Linksys WCG200 Cablemodem
Motorola DSL Modem
Linksys WRT54G Wireless AP
Netgear FVS336G Dual-WAN Gigabit Firewall
Netgear JGS524 24-Port Gigabit Switch (Unmanaged)

Laptop:
IBM ThinkPad T61p
2.53Ghz C2D, 4GB RAM, 320GB HD, 1920x1200 LCD

As to why I have $500-600 in "Prosumer" networking equipment? I got sick of all the lousy stability, low throughput, and screwy quirks of various high-end consumer routers (basically anything that had more than 4 bare ports on it).

Since I put them in last year (part of my tax return), I've had ZERO stability issues.

Throughput? Oh, never mind, it finished downloading while I was typing that.

Quirks? None really. Setting up bridged routing through the dual WAN connections (one cable, one DSL) was a bit hairy, but it works.

Bottom to top.

Matrox Millenium G200 (IIRC). Great (for it's time) 2D.
3dfx Voodoo 2 (looks like one of the 12MB models)

And my memory may be failing me but the top looks like a Hauppage WinTV card.

Ah: Just zoomed the picture up to full res. Yeah, Hauppage.

And condolences on that Sonata case.
After going back to a full-sized Coolermaster, I've sworn off the Sonatas (and I've owned one of each of the first three versions). Doing any work in them was just too much of a female dog.

What is the point of having more than one monitor?

[/ QUOTE ]

Ah. A multi-monitor virgin! Prepare the sacrificial stone!

Okay, if you're ANYTHING like a screen real-estate junkie, you'll know you can only usually go up so high before the monitor gets recockulously huge, expensive, and sluggish. Also, with full-screen apps, you have to alt+tab your way out (if the game allows it) to use something else.

Additional monitors provide:

More screen real-estate in a semi-economical manner.
The ability to have multiple apps open and viewable (when I'm gaming I have Paragonwiki open in a browser on my secondary monitor and CoH on my primary), so it keeps application flipping to a minimum.
E-Peen: You get to laugh at all those poor so-and-sos who have less monitors than you do.

here's mine:

My Work Bench

Okay, that might be a bit confussing for you to look at, so I'll issolate the systems:

My Work Bench (Highlighted)

The Red box on the wall is where my 15" LCD media monitor used to hand, right up until it burned out about a month ago (Oh well can't complain I bought it for $5 and it lasted 3 years.)
The Red high lighted system in the corner is my media server... basically useless right now with out the monitor.

The Purple system is my Media production system, where I've got Adobe Premier, Sony Vegas pro, Office, Audacity, Adobe Photoshop and the rest of my media producing mumbo-jumbo loaded.

The Teal system is my gaming rig. That's what I've Got CoH loaded on.

The Keyboard is a Logitech G15 Gaming keyboard (LOVE IT btw), the mouse is Logitech G5 gaming mouse.

And just to answer any question that may be raised about it, no. I do NOT have one monitor per system. I have 1 monitor (The LCD on the left) hooked up for my gaming system, and I use both for my media production system:

Yup, I have a Split screen for one system.

That's an awful lot of "...for Dummies" books there!

Seriously, many of those are quite well done, but I couldn't resist.

Is that a rack of model paints there?

Hey, never underestimate the power of a book!

wow did that ever sound like an ad line for the public library...

Besides, most of those I bought when Comp USA went under so like 7 books was $15.

Dude, that's my old case from like 5 years ago. Why do you think I used it for the media server?

My good system is in an Antec P-180 baby!

Finally got a shot. Taken by my crappy camera phone.

In the shot is my brick-case, and sitting on the brick is my pill-minder (for my allergies), my USB wireless device (on an external HD), the fan to keep said device from overheating, and my remote collection. And some random detrimus that, as the picture shows, kind of prevails in my room.

Left of that is my (free) LCD monitor, a barely-visible CD case with my DS perched atop it (and my EVE pirate schedule), my usual arrangement of coffee and juice, tissues (allergies), my utility rack (I don't even KNOW what's on that thing anymore), the most durable calculator I've ever had (a Casio fx-115W that I've had since my Freshman year of high school), with my keyboard under the desk.

Right is my LCD TV, my incense/diffuser kit (matches, spare sticks/cones), a candle that I keep as a testament to how hot my room gets (It wasn't that deformed before the summer), a thoroughly crushed can of Tab, some peanuts (I forget to eat sometimes and need emergency rations), an empty Gatorade, and two ancient Mike's Hard Lemonades that I've had for over a year and really just sort of forgot about. Plus my defunct VCR and my cablebox.

The brick, one of my friends helped me build... in that he helped recommend parts (that I've long since forgotten what I've put into it), and is the first machine I've ever constructed from the ground up myself. I'll have to see if I can't dig up my specs at some point.

Ironically, that's only half of my desk, too. The other half is off-camera, and includes a lot of other random crap (including a desk-fan to help mitigate the heat levels in my room), my ASVAB study tools, and all of the clothes that I keep meaning to actually sew things back onto but keep forgetting.

Okay, here's a not-so-great picture of my setup.

Pardon the cable mess.

Had a storm that blew out several outlets in my place and had to haul stuff around so the electricians could get at them.

Not sure if I've ever seen a rack mounted server in a home computer room environment before.

for tinkerers and IT pros they're actually fairly common. Company overhauls their rigs, sells the old stuff for pennies on the dollar, you can grab all sorts of gear if you know where to look. I've got a rack myself, just never gotten around to actually doing anything with it. Got it in storage right now.

So here's my rig. Not much really. My new aluminum case is in the lower right corner. Just one 19" LCD display. On either side are my speakers. To the right of all that is my wirelessly networked printer - it just happens to be at my desk because it's a convenient spot. The keyboard and mouse, I won at Hero Con last year. Rig is Core 2 Duo w/ 2GBs RAM, GeForce 8800GTS, and Windows 7 RC (64-bit). The Musketeer on the front has been modified to control four case fans (2 in/ 2 out).

However, I was tired of not having 3D sound. Without much of a place to mount speakers, I figure out the best way to put up a pair of rear channel speakers was to mount them to the back of my chair. There is a cable, but I modified it to be more than long enough to reach the back of the computer and the power outlet (for the amp).

Not pictured, to the right of my desk is the 24" LCD TV w/ DVD player & cable TV feed. To the right of that is my wife's computer & desk. This is all in our bedroom since we have a roommate in the 2nd bedroom.

My wireless router sits in the living room with my NSA-220 network storage device. I use that box to backup important files (it has RAID1) and store my music. It can also download files for me (I can remote into it at work and tell it to grab FTP files (it can do torrents too)) and sync my USB key to it. The wireless router also does Homeplug so I can network via the power circuit. My old router is sitting unused on the far right.

Yeah, a few years ago, my buddy's law firm transplanted to a new data center and trashed over 50 server cabinets (not just racks, CABINETS) after they couldn't give them away to employees. He picked up one for himself with his van, but had forgotten that I had access to a box truck, storage and that these cabinets went for hundreds of dollars on the reseller market.

I was so pissed at him. It would have been an easy few grand in EACH of our pockets.

Yeah, I don't think I'm that much of a hardcore geek where I've had an actual server rack in my house before I've had a couple of personal servers at one point or another though.

I should really go back and make a second copy of that, and actually draw little lines to all the random junk. >> Because it occurs to me you can just barely see the melted candle behind the tab can. It's the squishy orange blob. Not to be confused with the stack of sticky notes infront of the can!

And you can aaalmost make out the nifty diffuser I have, but it's partially off-camera on the right.

<.< I should probably clean my room more often.

just takes a like minded or same organized, or lack there of, to see where one was going explanation wise I guess...
