The formula used for Player name colours?
Er, I think you can choose name colours in the Options menu.
No, there isn't anyway to select an individual name color for someone for you do see in the chat box that I know of. And for me at least it seems that the color someone gets is the color they always are for me.
Ironically someone in one of my channels name starts with "Cobalt" and their name appears red for me.
The only person that knows the equation is pohsyb, and so far he hasn't shared more than generalities.

I got as far as the phrase "blurtle hash" and gave up.
There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.
Other than the fact that it probably won't stick upon zoning, I don't see why they won't let us choose our own name colors. I mean, it looks kinda silly to have a max height huge male Tanker with a bright pink chat name... >.>

The basis of color is a hash function (who's name escapes ATM) done on your global name. The hash value is then used as RGB collor values for the name. There some extra thing done to make sue the color is bright enough, but that's the gist of it.
Not only on your global name. Does it on character names, too. Otherwise a person's character names would always match their global name, and that's definitely not the case.

And when your SG owes rent, the client does it to the "Your rent is due" message also. rofl.

Correct. I'm saying that that bug might end up affecting our names if we could pick the colors, instead of having it assigned to us.
We should be able to pick the color for our @Global Name and the color for Charcter Name. Let it continue to assign a random color at creation, but give us the option to change it.

[/ QUOTE ] The global chat colors is a preference that only affects our own client. Personal name colors show up the same for everybody. Even if we picked our own, it would be saved in the character data and wouldn't be affected by the same type of bug.
Besides that, I agree it should be easy to add such a preference... except that I'm sure we'd have so many people using similar colors, especially when in the same SG.. which would defeat the purpose of having the colors different.
It uses what Pohsyb refers to as a "Burtle Hash" (ref: http://cityofheroes.wikia.com/wiki/I...al_Name_Colors)

Technically, its using a burtle hash on the name string, converting that integer into a color value, then brightening the rgb values 5 at a time until its luminosity is at least 127
[/ QUOTE ]
However a Google search for the term finds only three references to "burtle hash", one of which is the Wiki itself. Luckily the Wiki page does have a link to a reference page:

As a lcoal thing - no problem.
As a global thing so everyone sees the colour you wish that color would have to be send with every text string, which does add to the overhead.
There is a reason on my laptop I dont enable the chat colours for names, it makes a noticable performance impact.

I agree though, it's easier for them to put in a client-side calculation with every text string instead of transmitting an extra value it every time.

Well that answers my question then. I was hoping to find some sort of application that duplicates this, but that's seems a bit unlikely now. Thank you for the info, nonetheless.

Open up the test server and try different names there.. it's the closest thing we have so far. lol
I would like to find out if anyone knows the formula used to determine the colour assigned to players names when Individual Name Colours are enabled?
Basically, I'm hoping to find a way to 'choose' certain colours by tweaking the names.
