Origins Continued?

Do they not often have names like mutate (I'm going off memory, being at work)? With their strange tentacle limbs and melted features, mutation is the only thing I can think of for the Lost. Besides, dont they drop mutation origin DOs/SOs?

The Mutant origin refers to people who were born mutated some way (i.e. different from their own species). Science refers tro people who were changed in some way due to exposure to something. So the Lost should be Science origin.

Sorry, going to take the chance to put a few ideas of my own regarding origins up.

I REALLY think we need some origin respecs, and multiple origin characters.

Honestly, think of some of your favorite comic book heroes and villains. Do THEY fall neatly into a single origin? Or do they grab at every available advantage to win the good/bad fight?

What would you list Dr. Doom as? Natural? He is a genius, and was able to do some wild things because of it. Tech? He did make that sweet armor. Magic? He can do that too...

Spider-man? Science, right? What about his web-shooters? Classically he made them himself. So that puts him up on Natural (For his genius) AND tech (For his gadget.)

Even the most basic, Thor. Naturally a god/magically enhanced.

Truth is single origin characters are far more uncommon than character who would claim multiple origins.

So gimme multiple origins already! :P

While this is true, the substance they're exposed to causes them to mutate. Their origin is kinda blurred, IMO, especially since all of them mutate into the same general being.

No - they are EXPOSED TO A SUBSTANCE TO GAIN THEIR POWERS - that's classic science origin right there.

What if they were never exposed to any substances themselves but came out of the womb with the capability to mutate or develop a mutation inherited from their parental units? NATURAL Origin all over IMO.

Sorry. It just looked like so much fun that I wanted to play too.

if not standard for their species, even if it occurs naturally, that's classic mutation origin. Now, if it's a stable mutation, consistently passed on (like Anne McCaffery's Talented) you would have an arguement for calling it Natural instead.

But what you described matches the X-Men, and they are definatly Mutant origin.

Heck, even in game canon we have multiple origin characters, like AkashiKnight who was mentioned as a technomagical warrior.

Yes, but I'm merely pointing out that the substance causes them to mutate, and they all mutate into the same "species". Every single Lost mutates into some kind of psychic-wielding Rikti-wannabe. I just haven't figured out how some of the Rikti seem to lose their psychic powers, though the Lost mutations could very well be the bulk of their psychic forces and the rest are generated by their homeworld reinforcements. /shrug

Many characters/factions in this game and in the comics can be explained with multiple origins. I think the Rikti happen to be one of them.

Why not just have 4 choice when you choose an origin that give the same boosts to all origins but just have different names to them.

They could all have minor things
such as
1) 5% boost to sprint speed
2) 2% boost to punch
3) 5% boost to "offensive gadget" (item at character birth)
4) free "jump enhancer"

taking the first example you could have natural be called "marathon training", magic be called "enhanced legs", tech be called "running servo's", mutant be called "altered stride" and science be called "sprint sustainer" but all would add the same innocuous boost to running... mind you not TOTAL running, just sprint.

this would allow a variation in descriptions, and in the starting powers granted to all, without drastically changing the gameplay mileu

(leaves 2 pennies on the bar)
just my 2 cents....

...I kinda don't see the point there. People are fine with power descriptions the way they are, doubling up seems like a waste of time.

The other reason this would be bad idea is that players will min/max around the origins...which is what the devs do not want.

This should also be moved to the S&I forum.
