Is it just me? or .....

Is it just me, or after seeing all the videos for Champions Online why couldn't any of the effects, energy, and time have been placed into CoX to kick the game up another notch? With all the advancements in graphics, power set ideas, and custom creations, I think it would have catapulted CoX into "the hero/sci-fi" game alot of people would be attracted to.
Don't get me wrong, I love CoX ... but with all the things seen for Champions Online, it would have silenced alot of the player base with their wants and desires.
Does anyone else have similar thoughts? or is it just me?

It's a common suggestion, with a common answer:

Graphical and code-base engine re-designs suck in both the time/man-hour factor, and in the cost factor. They have mentioned that they were looking at the feasibility of a graphical increase in an off-handed fashion, but I don't think they've ever stated, definatively, that they were going to do it.

That, and the fact that Co* doesn't require a high-end computer has been a major selling point for a lot of players, and I'm not sure how many we would lose because they didn't feel it worth the expense to update their machine just for one game. I won't even speculate on those figures.

Somehow get the feeling that this thread isn't long for this world, either, as it soooort of skirts the edges on 'direct comparison/contrast' that is taboo on the forums.

Because upping graphics doesn't -just- come with the graphics. You need to tell the player base that some of their graphics cards, or computers may no longer support it. You need to see if the game's engine can handle something new. You need to determine if the animations will work properly with updated graphics.

Etc.

I fully understand the graphics part being mostly client side, but the big thing I was looking at was the powers and costume pieces. So much of those could of been thrown into CoX and silented a large amount of the player base for some time. I just don't want CoX in 5 years to turn into the disaster that became of Star Wars Galaxies for Sony Online once they focused more on EQ2.

Why would it?

It's got a stable player base, it's got devs that actually enjoy their job, and are hiring more and more people to implement whatever new things they have in the future.

The powers and costume appearances in this game are far better than those in CO. If you like em, when it comes out, have at. I for one don't like them one whit, and can't stand to watch the videos because the garishness just ... bleah.

Just because another game is coming out, is not a reason to start upping the ante on this one in ways that the general populace seems to be okay with as is.

Asked jay about updating some of the older (and somewhat broken - Female, Tops with Skin, Stripes, I think it is that doesnt' line up at all, for an example) costume bits. Said there were so many demands for new bits that updating old ones, while he wouldn't mind, probably wouldn't be something to hold your breath waiting for.

Comicy crap, but crap.

I actually disagree with that. Yes, the cell-shading was a major step down graphics-wise, but their sliders, body-tones, and customization, along with everything? I'd say that they made up for it pretty well.

This. I'm in CO beta and it is even worse than that.

GAH! CEL-SHADING! I've been hostile towards that since Nintendo came out with Zelda: The Wind Waker! Please, devs! Do not update the graphics with cel-shading! It almost killed Zelda and it WOULD kill CoX!

Yup. While they might have "more" details and such? The fact that it's done with this process is abhorrent to me. I just can't even look at it. If they did away with that, it'd still be jerky, badly animated, and everything else it's been known for lately. But at least it might be *watchable*... *cringe*

It looks like a comic book, and frankly, comic books look like crap. Poor them for sticking to their heritage.

Doom.

Yep.

This is really doom.

No, they look like a *garish* comic. Those went the way of the dinosaur, mostly. It goes in phases, obviously. This game reflects a far more 'realistic' looking environment. My friend really loves the way CO looks. He's also been known to take a beautifully rendered Poser figure and overexpose/flatten/cellshade it until it looks like ... well, junk imho.

On Cel-Shading:

I decided to try the install of CO that my son had left running while he was off doing something else. I swear I was punching buttons, moving my mouse, and all to no avail...

then I realized I had been 'playing' the Windows Desktop graphic for 5 minutes.

This is the exact reason I'm not looking into any new "comic book games." I don't like comic books and I'm glad City of Heroes doesn't keep too close to them as it is. I've no desire to play a game that's closer, because all that brings is crappy stuff like mandatory cel shaders.
