City of Heroes crashing very frequently.

My City of Heroes has been crashing very frequently, often alternately between the one with an error message and one that is just a huge freeze. It is getting EXTREMELY annoying. This is nothing like lagging nor internet connection, it is very sudden and unexpected. Anyone got any advice or assistance?

I'm having the same issues, but only recently. Here's my Diag, if you can get some info off it. Thanks in advance.

You two aren't the only ones this is happening to. Before i-14, I never crashed and only had lag during server-wide events (i.e. Rikti invasions, Zombie invasions, etc.). And now? The game seems to crash at least once a day and lags at weird times... it's all very random.

And before anyone tells me to post a "Diag/HijackThis", I've always run a very clean and tight machine and nothing has changed on my rig since i-13... no new programs, firewalls, hardware, etc.

So, the problem definitely is NOT on my end. The devs changed something in the game's code and now everything is unusually wonky. Minor bugs I can live with, but when you start crashing for no apparent reason... that's just plain wrong!

YEP
I posted about this a few days ago, as well as some texture problems I was having that a friend now says he is having as well.

Everyone said it was on my end. Everyone said it was my card overheating and dying or drivers needing updating. I told them otherwise, they told me I was wrong. I've been playing Crysis and TF2 all day with no problems, and I'm pretty sure those games are more graphically intensive than CoH. These problems aren't caused by my card overheating or dying, or drivers needing updating (updated them a few days ago after these problems started). These problems JUST started after the last patch. PLEASE fix this problem. The FREEZE AND CRASH is especially annoying. It's happened to me 3 times today, once after being logged in only for a few minutes and again just now WHILE SITTING AT THE CHARACTER SELECT SCREEN. Is my video card overheating from a single model being displayed? I sincerely doubt it. Changing graphics settings in game seems to have no effect, these errors occur whether I'm at low or high settings. Changing my settings then applying will get rid of any texture glitches, but the CRASHES are my main problem.

tl;dr IT AINT OUR SYSTEMS ITS COH FIX IT PLEASE

Yeah having constant lost connection to mapserver errors since the anniversary push too. no issues before the anniversary but now constantly.

ANother for the crashing. I'm getting two or three in a row more and more frequently.

Let me go ahead and add my 2 cents in, I too have been having the same issue, I'm thinking its only with Vista 64bit because me and a friend have that type of cpu and havn't heard anything from non 64bit users. But yeah since I14 I have been losing mapserver very frequently when I had hardly none before I14. I also take an extremely long time to request the patch when I double click the COH Icon, anyone esle having these problems and is it only happening on vista 64bit OS?

Posted

XP here. Haven't played on my Vista systems in ever. I should patch them though and see.

Posted

Nope, not just a Vista 64 issue, either.

I'm using XP-Pro on an Intell Duo-Core system with 4 gigs of memory, which is more than enough for COX. Not only that, I upgraded my graphics card to a NVIDIA 9500 GT (512 MB DDR2) about a month prior to I14.

The game was running like a dream pre-I14 and I was quite a happy camper... now I'm just frustrated... someone give me a hug.

I'm sitting on a Quad running XP-64, 8 gigs, and a GTX260 in a case ventilated by 4 120mm fans and a 60mm fan under the motherboard tray (plus the CPU cooler).

I got a LOT of crashes yesterday. But I spent 14 HOURS in-game. And it was probably some of the absolute HEAVIEST fighting I've ever seen on the game. 6-8 Kronos, a few dozen Zeus, and dozens of Malta Quantums and Sappers within a half-block area.

Not to mention 30-50 people at my back...

Ironically, most of the crashes came during off-peak times (when I wasn't fighting).

I upgraded to a Q6700 2.66GHz Core 2 Quad processor and added 2 GB of memory (for a total of 4GB) this afternoon, and as a result I'm now crashing left and right in the game.

The first time was just standing around in Atlas chatting with an old friend who is taking advantage of the reactivation weekend.

The second was while cycling characters to get everyone the "Jubilant" 5 year anniversary badge.

The third time (especially annoying) was while the updater was verifying the files after the second time.

After that, I had a good hour or so in the game with no crashes, then a sudden crash to desktop while trying to load into an MA test mission.

I know my new hardware upgrades are working fine, because I spent all afternoon playing other games which are more processor and graphics intensive than CoH with all the settings cranked to max and no problems to speak of. I'm running on Win XP (32 bit) SP2, and had zero problems at all with the 3.2GHz Pentium D I was using prior to today.

I too am having this frequent crashing problem. And I'm on a brand new computer with 2.3 Gigs of video. It can't be my machine.
I have noticed that it happens most often in AE missions, especially if it's a full 8 man team. The map City 02 seems to be a crash-trap for a lot of people.
It is VERY frustrating, as this is stopping me from helping my SG get prestige! I got so frustrated earlier I just logged out and played another game for awhile.
It has to have something to do with AE. And the only real difference between AE and what we used to do is the custom made mobs. Hmmm.

Believe it or not, I've only ever crashed once during an AE mission and the whole team crashed at the same time. The most frequent crashes seem to happen outside of AE. In fact, I just now froze trying to enter a normal mission and had to manually quit the game.

I sure hope the devs have enough time to take a look at this problem before pushing out I15, cuz the whole system seems to be F-U-B-A-R.

My crashes tonight occured in two situations:

1-Superspeeding into a huge melee with tons of effects and particles.

or

2-Rapid clicking for random reward rolls with MA tickets.

Either way, it seems that there was too much going on for the client to keep up with so it dumped me.

I have experienced the "clicking for reward rolls" crash fairly often aswell. This happens on both the merit and ticker sellers and seems to occur just when i click on the menu to click into reward rolls.

If I were you, I'd run a Memtest on the system. Also, pull out a copy of CoreTemp and see how warm your CPU is getting.

If you're crashing all of the sudden like this, I'd do this to make sure the new components aren't the culprits.

Very frequent crashes since Issue 14.

Nothing was changed on my computer.

The majority of these crashes are a frozen "loading" screen, in which the loading bar fills about 1 inch and stays there indefinitely.

I've been getting insane mapserver issues since the anniversary, but no real crashes to be spoken of. I just mapserver so frequently that it's impossible to play through a mission, try the mission architect system, or do anything that isn't staring at the loading screen over and over again.

Only thing I can think of would be the amount of bandwidth or processing required whenever your near an AE building.

two things that point it towards that for me are...

I had a slight temperature problem on my pc last year and CoH was the only thing it showed up on. Crysis? No problem, Call of Duty? easy. CoH.. 20 minutes.. Freeze reset.

Out of everything I was using CoH was pounding my CPU more than any other piece of software. GPU is another story

To make another small point. I can play CoH for hours on my laptop, its running vista 32, has 2 gigs of ram an amd mobile single core chip 2650e (ergh being replaced soon) and a horrid Ati x1200 graphics chip.

I have even run ITF's on the thing, though on that 3rd mission it was more of an ITF in slideshow but you get my point.

Core temp idles between 43 and 45 degrees Celcius, and runs between 50 and 55 while in the game. The highest I've seen it go has been 60 degrees while alt-tabbing between windows and opening multiple browser windows with CoH in the background. The processor is rated to get to 71 degrees Celcius before it starts throwing crashes. I also made sure to get a heatsink that was rated appropriately for the processor with high CFM airflow.

I'll try running the memtest while I'm out running errands this afternoon, but again, I haven't had any problems with anything other than City of Heroes.

EDIT: Now _Jets_ on the other hand sounds like he's got a definite overheating problem. I'm getting crashes to desktop; he's getting complete PC reboots.

Agreed for _Jets_. Or a slightly underspec/defective PSU that's bombing on high current draw.

Your temps look fine.
Question, how current are your motherboard/driver controller drivers?
If the answer to the above is "fairly current", and the Memtest comes back fine, it's probably something in-game. (See "You Are S.O.L. until they patch).

Did a complete reformat three weeks ago with all the latest drivers from the Intel website, and patched to the latest BIOS release this weekend after I ordered the new hardware (with no issues between then and the processor swap yesterday).

HOWEVER, I ran into 4 errors on the first pass of memtest and 1 the second pass (ran it again to be sure)... so it very well could be related to the new RAM.

Later on, I'll pull the sticks that were already in the system and run it again with just the new sticks so I can be sure it's them. If I get errors again, then I'll swap the slots and run Memtest to ensure that the motherboard isn't the issue. If I don't get errors, then I'll test again with just the old RAM... it doesn't happen often, but sometimes perfectly good RAM goes bad after a while.

My computer is freezing up and have to manually shutdown as well. Running XP Home edition with a GeForce 7600 GT. My video card is very suddenly overheating, but it doesn't seem to happen while I'm doing anything intense, rather when I'm just... standing around. Standing around in Pocket D at 4 in the morning, freeze, standing around in Atlas Park, freeze, letting CoH sit at the damn CHARACTER SELECT SCREEN even got me a freeze up. Yet, Crysis, TF2, any other games have all run just fine. I don't get any frame rate lag or indication of gradual overheating while playing CoH, it's like it's just VERY suddenly spiking up in heat and freezing. Video card shows signs of damage.
