Some of the feedback this arc has been getting (global names removed).

- "Tiny bubbles!" I loved it. Funny and well written, down to the bio's on the disco army. I loved it!

- Brought back some bad memories of the dark times of disco. Good dialogue, funny characters. Well done!

- Excellent! Great custom enemy group! Finally a cause worth fighting for!

- lol .... great fun. The dialog was hilarious and I had no probs solo on my corr

- NICE! While I enjoyed some Disco Music... I certainly appreciated the opportunity to destroy it!

- Awesome concept. I loathe disco and love rock, so this spoke to me. Thanks for putting it together.

- 1 star for content, 1 star for original group, 1 star for not being tedious, 1 star for fun, 1 star for Rocking! Full on 5 from me - could use more bell-bottoms and gold chains though.... Nice mix of villain powers and good naming of villains. Bravo!

- Very, very funny! Thank you for that mish!

- Okay. Friggin' brilliant. Nice level of challenge, not overly long, interesting plot. 5 stars.

I ran it solo; It is fun, light-hearted, and shows us just how close we came to a diso-ocroacy. Nice work on the critters' costumes.

I have done quite a few tweaks on this one that I really think have improved it. These include:

- Added a few more Rock references

- Adjusted the boss and kidnap group spawns spots in the first mission (they used to both always appear in the last room).

- Added a clue and dialogue to tighten up the link between the two missions.

- Adjusted power sets on a couple of the Disco Nation faction.

Thanks to every one that has provided me with feedback.

Long Live Rock!

FYI if anyone tried to play this or any of my other arcs today they were broken due to the patch. They are all back in working order now.

Aww. I'm finding this thread just before bed. Can't save Rock if I'm faceplanting the keyboard.

But tomorrow, in the name of Bill Veeck, Disco will be Demolished once and for all!

@GlaziusF

Running this on a low 40s DB/Fire brute, since Mission Enginner inexplicably refuses to earn itself.

Also, due disclosure: I know pretty much nothing about disco. Not how it started, not how it went, not "why it deserved to die". I liked classical music as a little boy, and while my palate has broadened, mostly it's to other forms of instrumental music.

I am pretty much 100% guaranteed to get no in-joke.

---

You know, I was about to say "you can call him 'God of Rock', but no, you can't.

The President has been kidnapped by disco. Can I rock hard enough to save the President?

...um. Crey? Crey was only established in the 90's. I wonder if they time-traveled.

Ah. And so they... er, apparently did? It's not really clear.

Also, Carter was grey-haired when he was in office.

---

A forest. Why am I in a forest? Wasn't Disco Demolition Night in Chicago? If this is supposed to be a park or something, you ought to say so.

Rock seems to have the upper hand, though. Handily, even. None of the rockers seem to go down in the combats.

Though I have to say I don't exactly get the disco powersets. Katana? Dual blades? The sonic/sonic I kinda understand, but the ice/electric dual blaster just doesn't make sense.

I think there are axes, maces, and broadswords that resemble more normal objects and would make more sense to give people who are, essentially rioters.

The costumes are pretty nice, though. As are those huge crates.

Though the boomboxes really don't work, given that they pump out mostly techno and electronica. Maybe just have the guards doing Dance Rave?

Hmm.. I know the doc needs to spawn off only one of your many alternate destructibles, but given how Disco Demolition night shook out maybe it should be the records?

Ah, okay. So these were Crey guys who came back along with their former janitor.

For some reason the objective doesn't count as complete until his body fades away. Since he talks about coming back I thought he might show up somewhere else on the map, but it was not to be.

---

Storyline - ***. My main problem with the storyline is that there wasn't enough of it. I was expecting a final showdown in THE HALLS OF ROCK-ock-ock or something, and maybe a little buildup to stopping the one fateful night as well.

Design - ***. Visual design's only really off in one place -- just have a look at some file photos of President Carter. Powers design is a little more problematic - I have no trouble with the Crey doctors having random-ish powersets, but some of the Disco Nation people feel off to me. The location for that mission also feels off - maybe call it rioting spilling over into the streets and Disco "fighting back", and put it on a KR map.

Gameplay - *****. Had a few bumps with the Disco people until I figured out to prioritize the Devas, and the Doc tossed me around a bit before the -knockback from the gravity controls kicked in. But no problems finding objectives or fighting it out.

Detail - ***. Part of my problem with the design is actually that the powers for the Disco Nation don't flow at all from the enemy descriptions. They're modestly biographical but in most cases (bar KFF and the Diva) do nothing to explain the powersets.

Overall - ***. It's an idea that could go places and it plays well, but the powers feel kinda tacked on, and I feel like the story stops about halfway.

Looking at your review it is clear that many of your problems with the story stem from not knowing the history it is based on. I hope after you read this you will go back and consider rerating it as will the rest of your team..

Let me explain some of your concerns..

…um. Crey? Crey was only established in the 90’s. I wonder if they time-traveled.

[/ QUOTE ]

It is clear that Disco hired them and he came back in time, So they easily could have come with him. People are often slammed for spoon feeding these sorts of details and I felt it did not require an additional explanation.

[ QUOTE ]
A forest. Why am I in a forest? Wasn’t Disco Demolition Night in Chicago? If this is supposed to be a park or something, you ought to say so.

[/ QUOTE ]

The Disco Demolition took place at Comesky Park in Chicago. It is an outdoor stadium and that map was the closest available.

[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

See above, the Disco Demolition was an HISTORICAL event.

[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

Again, most of the negative stuff is coming for the fact you did not know this was an historical event. As for President Carter, I get more “Great job on Carter” than most anything else character design wise. Not having lived through that time yourself, the portrayal of Carter may not resonate with you.

[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

Ok, not all the powerset are directly tied to the descriptions/names of the NPCs, but there are reasons for the powersets. For example, duel blades features many dance like moves which fit the theme. The Dancing Queen throws ice (as is Cold as Ice, though if you missed the other Disco and Rock references, I am sure that does not make sense either).

In summary, it is clear that most of the references, quotes, humor and the history were not understood. This is clearly a culture/age thing and if the story was based on today’s music or country music it would almost all go over my head too, That would not however make it a bad story, just one that is not for me.

I sincerely feel the arc was judged unfairly because of your lack of knowledge with the subject matter. It is one thing if the arc was truly problematic, but totally another when the ratings were based on incorrect assumptions.

WN

P.S. - You had three of my arcs to choose from to review. I would be curious as to why you picked the only one with a subject that you have no interest/investment in?

Then why on earth would you pick this arc to review? It is a humor arc loosely based on historical events. If you have no chance of getting the humor and no chance of understanding the references it seems like there is no possible way you could have liked this arc from the word go. So, why bother to review it at all?

I've played another Disco arc but I'm pretty sure this is a different one, so take this with a grain of salt.

What's the difference between downgrading an arc because you don't get the cultural references and downgrading it because you don't know the writer's Supergroup and all the injokes there? Whenever you write for a niche, you're either going to work to ensure that the common person understands it, or you're going to endure reviews from people who 'just don't get it'.

I'm working on the second draft of a novel that takes place at a Fantasy/ Sci Fi convention. It's overloaded with jokes about con's and about fandoms. But I know going in that I'm unlikely to be published, and if I do that it's unlikely to sell well because it's niche and I can't unniche it without gutting the story to explain every single joke.

It's part of the compromise I have to make as a writer.

And it's possible that Death to Disco might be in the same group.

I'm curious why you'd even play an arc for which it should have been obvious you'd have no interest? That'd be like me playing any of the various catgirl arcs.

QR - I played this a while ago, and i thoroughly enjoyed it, and to be perfectly honest I didnt know that Disco Demolition Night was a historical night when I did. As far as I'm concerned, the in-jokes and references aren't all that hardcore nichework at all. Disco and its tropes and characteristics are fairly well-known in popular culture, at least in my experience. I felt that the arc flowed well, had a variety of objectives, wasn't too long, and had interesting, amusing and well-balanced customs. The writing is good and the authors preference for telling a story and not pandering to the tickets/inf crowd is clear. This is exactly the type of arc the MA is designed for.

It looks like you didn't have much fun playing it, Glazius. Which is a shame, but then, Disco isnt for everyone...until they realise that it actually is, baby!

Eco.

EDIT: The more I think about it, the more I realise that this arc was FUN to play. Knowing about exactly what Carter looked like etc is irrelevant. So often, I find myself wading through dull as ditchwater arcs for a mission and a half and then quitting with a /facepalm. Not this one. It's all about the Fundom, dudes!

I meant to post this earlier...I played this one a few days ago and I really enjoyed it. As has been mentioned, that probably has a lot to do with my remembering those days, and Demolition Night at Comiskey Park, quite clearly. I was one of the original disco haters.

It was fun to play. Five stars.

How about just one more mission on this arc, so we can know that all those grannies and kids who've lost their (temporary) culture and source of happiness to a muscular bunch of rockers and a violent superbeing do actually end up in a better place afterwards?

The grannies could become Tina Turner. Kids could go on to perhaps survive breakdancing. And as all the rockers come back out of hiding, there'd still be... Rick Astley. Seems like a mission to me.

This was great fun and innovative (and the Hard Rockers really ROCK) so well worth my 5 star rating.

Only gripe is the end boss. He seemed a tad bland compared to how garish everyone else was (also making him hard to spot). I'd have expected nothing less than FULL GARY GLITTER.
