The Course of Superhero Romance... (Discussions)

Yesterday, Dark Respite twittered the following comments:

With Cende and I writing concurrent stories, I'm trying to think of how to describe our respective works...

She's writing DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, I'm writing... hmm. I'd say TWILIGHT, but that'd be REALLY 'damning myself with faint praise', as it were.

(when I wondered about Doctor Zhivago - really?, she responded:

Well, yours is this huge, deep, historically rooted love story. Should I have said THE THORNBIRDS instead?

Some, yeah. It's a little improvement over a Russian depression novel, at least.)

So I got to thinking.

Twilight (we'll go with it) vs. either Doctor Zhivago or the Thornbirds.

I'm writing a huge, dense novel that very few people read, but the ones who finally make it all the way to the end usually wind up remembering (which I suppose is reassuring). It doesn't sell well, but it turns into a timeless classic that's assigned as torture reading in English lit college classes.

She's writing a light, easily approachable love story that will sell millions, is panned by critics (so far so good on THAT count at least), and the fans of which will be completely, totally rabid (ditto).

Mine will turn into either a movie or (more likely) a mini-series staring the Serious Dramatic Actors of the day, who will give critically acclaimed, intense performances. It will go on to be called, like the book that spawned it, a classic of its art form. English lit college students will watch it instead of reading the book and mostly get the story.

Hers will turn into a summer-blockbuster popcorn flick that will make teenage girls sigh over the male lead(s) and spawn all sorts of fantasy sites on the female lead(s). The critics will hate it, and the fans will be completely, totally rabid.

Between the books and movies, I'll be penniless (good thing my husband has a good job) and she'll make a fortune.

The really funny thing in all of this? I've never actually read or watched either The Thornbirds or Doctor Zhivago, and she's never read or watched any of the Twilight saga.

Thank you
I do believe she's been working on it, but she's going to be at the IGDA Conference all day for the next two days (Mon and Tue). Not likely til after that.

Where to find me after the end:
The Secret World - Arcadia - Shinzo
Rift - Faeblight - Bloodspeaker
LotRO - Gladden - Aranelion
STO - Holodeck - @Captain_Thiraas

Obviously, I don't care about NCSoft's forum rules, now.

I believe "Tavatron" was invented by me. Possibly.

Numitron was invented by a rabid, badge-less n00b on several designer substances.

Edit: Yep. It was. As was Posirina, which DR found to sound like tea. I would drink that tea. Whuttaboot "Positash?" Sounds like something Sylvester the Cat would say. "Sufferin' Positash!"

You asked, you got. Next chapter is up in the main story thread.

And I said that "Posimina" sounds like a type of tea. (As does "Posirina", admittedly.) "Posivisch" sounds likes a Russian slang word for something vaguely offensive." If I had to pair their names, I still like Tavatron.

... Not to be a scrooge, but where and how was Positron able to leave his armor without irradiating all of Rhode Island?

As I read more, I'll keep asking questions. I'm a lore-bastard.

That's okay, so am I.

2002 - Rikti Invasion 1.0 - Positron, while fighting the Rikti, loses control of his powers. (Exactly how it's never said, but stranger things have happened.)

2007 - Back in Issue 10, I believe it was, when the Rikti Invasion 2.0 kicked in, they released the last of the Top Cow comics, where the Phalanx, ignoring the warnings of Vanguard, decided to take on the Rikti and the Honoree... who promptly killed Synapse, Positron, Sister Psyche, and Manticore (Ms. Liberty and Statesman barely survived, only thanks to divine intervention, for lack of a better term). Lady Grey, the Dark Watcher, Borea, Levantera, Gaussian, and Serpent Drummer showed up to save the Phalanx's bacon and sent the Honoree fleeing.

Dark Watcher then rezzed the deceased Phalanx members, and in the process, 'cured' the mutation that had caused Positron to lose control of his powers. After that, he continued wearing the armor because it still enabled him to focus and better use his anti-matter-generating abilities, but he no longer needs to be Sealed In a Can, as it were.

Since then, Posi in Steel Canyon stands around holding his helmet under one arm.

I see... Well, I'm reading through it and finding it quite enjoyable. Any chance of you doing a novel featuring viewpoints from the villains side?

Also, where's the link for the main story again? I can't seem to find it this morning, and I despise forum reading.

Re: villain-side writing - hmmmmm... well I know that John aka Bloodspeaker (my husband) has occasionally mentioned doing one-off stories from the villains' perspective (especially from the perspetive of Banestar, the leader of the Nova Dominion - the nemeses of the Star Patrol). But that's not happened as of yet.

The link to the story (on the forums) is always in my signature as "Book I: A Tale of Nerd Flirting"... as is the link for "Book II: Courtship and Crime Fighting".

Theeere's the PDF.

Yea, I'll see what I can do about promoting it on Virtue. While there are a few dumbasses running about over there, I know a few that actually have a bit more positive feedback than myself.

Still, reading and writing down criticisms.

The life of an Arachnos Soldier would be an interesting story, even if its short. I'm a Lord Recluse fanboy.

Well, I just finished the first story...

And honestly? I can't complain about anything. As far as I've seen, you've followed lore. You didn't turn this into some fap-fiction. You've fleshed out characters properly and appropriately. I'm not sure about the Furies part, but heck that looks like it might have been written around the time the Incarnate Trials came out.

Nice portrayal of all the characters, as well as an acceptable amount of drama. I also enjoyed the way you explained all of the in-game events so they would actually look like dramatic, action-filled combat scenes instead of how they are represented in the game. You did an amazing job, and I honestly think your fan-fiction has the potential to draw in some more players to the CoX universe.

Of course, I'm not one for romance fan-fics, but the end nearly had me B'aawing.

... Just -how long- did you pester Positron and other members of the Freedom Phalanx for help in your story?

First, before I forget my manners, thank you for the compliments. Not sure about the term "fap-fiction", that's a new one for me! But as long as I avoided it, so far so good.

Ironically, the Furies' storyline was written well before Incarnate trials made their appearance. (The whole story was written and completed before Issue 15, actually - I just checked, so I beat iTrials and the whole Incarnate thing by a little over two years.) They're actually based upon in-game lore as well - an offshoot of the canon mission "Project Fury". It's unreal just how much lore really IS in this story, and there's still more to come!

As for pestering Posi and the gang...

It started out as only pestering two people - Hero 1 (because at the time, he was the story bible guy - I started this well before Dr. Aeon and Protean were hired at PS!) and Positron (coz it's his character). I asked:

Quote:
"1) how old is Positron (the character)?
2) is he involved with anyone?
3) does he ONLY do superhero work anymore or does he still have any interaction with the scientific/technological/academic community?

I'm curious because it's become something of a running gag (for lack of a better term) for our SG on Justice that our group's resident theoretical physicist/gadgeteer occasionally meets with Positron to discuss tech matters, science, and whatnot. And now as a result, her teammates tend to tease her about secretly dating him (although she has denied all allegations of involvement of any kind other than professional with the superhero).

Since now our SG has a website, and our leader is encouraging us to put stories on there, I'd like to do one or two of Dr. Tavarisch and Positron and how everyone rags on her, but I wanted to see if this is a storyline I should stop in its tracks coz Posi is unavailable/too old/not interested/gonna steer her towards Synapse instead/whatever."
Matt's inbox was full at the time, so Hero 1 wrote back:

Quote:
"I pinged Matt on this. Here's what he gave me:

1) Early 40’s

2) No, but that’s not to say he wouldn’t be dating if the opportunity presented itself. He probably only goes for really smart, brainy type women.

3) All he does now is hang out in Steel Canyon and watch n00bs get pwn3d. Err, I mean, yes, he does scientific work in between hero missions."
And that was it - that's all the help I've gotten.

So I started writing TCOSR.

(Actually, that's not quite true - at HeroCon 2009, I did ask Hero 1 in person a couple questions about Praetorian Earth that I needed answered, and FWIW, I actually anticipated the official in-game storyline by about a year and a half. More on that in future.)

Now, I have it on the best authority that Matt has NEVER read it (and I don't think he ever will), probably because on a personal level, I kinda weird him out. But that's okay.

Don't forget to start on Part II (which is a work in progress, so no PDF, I'm afraid... yet).

I'll wait until Part 2 is done. I don't like waiting for a completed work, because then I become very annoying.

'Fap-Fiction' = Erogenous story-writing meant to be sexual in nature, with very little plot outside of a characters adventures into sexual deviance.

Everyone on the Dev staff is weird. Well, except Beastyle. He's cool. In fact, the only major complaint I have with the Dev's is that they don't visit the servers more often on their Signature characters. Not sure if he even has a dev, but I know quite a few Arachnos who'd love to see Lord Recluse just 'pop in' to their VG base once in awhile. Or just patrol around Grandville a bit.

Anyways, can't wait to see more of your writing. I'll just be waiting until you finish Part 2 before I start reading though.

EDIT: Where can I find some information on the Furies/What Story Arc are they a part of?

At this time the only major Signature characters who have dev players officially anymore are Posi, War Witch, Black Scorpion, and Synapse. Well, Hero 1 too, but he's a little on the strange side to have just wandering around. Protean and Dr. Aeon are secondary characters that are run by devs. I believe all the rest are arbiters, detectives, or general contacts.

I think there's a major problem in the studios these days in that the majority of the people in it seem to have no concept of the lore within their own game. The new stuff coming out either conflicts or contradicts, and there's no care taken with it. I don't know if the number of devs who have no attachment to the story has anything to do with that, but it certainly can't help.

Some info can be found on the Paragon Wiki in the "Project FURY" article. However, the BIG source is the first COH novel, "Web of Arachnos." You can probably find it at a bookstore without TOO much trouble. (They're not mentioned at all in the second COH book, "The Freedom Phalanx", except in very brief passing.)

They're mentioned every now and again in a couple of Arachnos arcs, but not much.

*sigh*

One of my personal gripes with this game is how rich of a history and lore it has, and how little they really go back and use it.

*****

FWIW, if you like my writing, you can always try my AE arcs (if they work - just search @Samuraiko in the AE and you'll find all mine). Otherwise, hit my website (link in a slightly earlier post where you found the PDF) and troll my other writing.

Just finished reading TCOSR a week or so ago and wanted to give a big thanks to you, Michelle, for such an incredible story!

I was amazed at how well you fit common gameplay events/mechanics into your world and kept it so grounded with the personal relationship of Posi & Tava. I'm guessing there's a TON of easter eggs and shout-outs that I didn't catch, but the ones I did brought a smile to my face.

This was my first fanfic read and also the first book I took from a PDF and converted to .MOBI to read on my kindle. Aside from the occasional spacing issue it was a perfect conversion and an easy way to read it!

I look forward to Pt II (when it's done) to do the same

Wow, thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it that much, and sure, not a problem. I was planning one of these years to write an actual 'back cover blurb' for it, but I guess I should do that sooner than later!

EDIT:

Quote:
Dr. Raymond Keyes had all but given up on ever finding a relationship. Although brilliant in a laboratory and eloquent at conferences, he was all too awkward and tongue-tied around women to find the right one. Then, of course, the whole superhero gig didn't exactly help - spending his nights as Positron, knight in shining body armor and scientist of the Freedom Phalanx, didn't leave him much in the way of free time, either. So he was understandably surprised when a relationship found HIM... and his life would never be the same.

****

Dr. Sorina Tavarisch somehow never had life go as she'd planned. Her quiet life went out the window when the world was invaded, and her skills as a physicist and electrical engineer, desperately needed in time of war, drew her out of her laboratory and onto the battlefield. Finally, after five years as a soldier, and then three more as a superhero scientist with the Star Patrol, she thought she had everything under control. Until she asked a colleague and fellow hero out for dinner one night... and life turned her whole world upside down yet again.

****

Now two of Paragon City's smartest scientists are about to get a crash course in relationships, whether it's a date interrupted by a Rikti assault, putting up with teasing teammates, or dealing with a group of supervillains whose sole goals are taking over the world and killing them in the process. But some things are just beyond any rational, scientific explanation... one of which happens to be love.

Fighting crime. Falling in love. Saving the world. It's all just part of...

THE COURSE OF SUPERHERO ROMANCE.

A novel set in the CITY OF HEROES universe.
Now all I need are about a half-dozen famous authors praising the book and I'm set.

On that subject, I have been working very closely with Cende, Bloodspeaker and by association Michelle ( Dark_Respite) on refining and moving my story forward. (shameless plug warning) found here, and (spoiler alert) the main character in that story Lylith/Helena is by and large an alternate version of my Star Patrol character Agent Collins, whom has has a couple of cameos in both TCoSR and Prophecy and Dreams. Anyway, in game Lylith was transferred to Justice and has begun to interact with both members of the Star Patrol and Nova Dominion and when I get off my lazy butt and start writing again will run concurrent with both Cende's and Michelle's stories mostly focusing on what is happening on the Isles.

Also Prophecy and Dreams found HERE has had a couple of glimpses of some interactions of a couple villains.

I stumbled across TCoSR sometime last year. Internet could be spotty in Iraq, so when I needed a CoH fix and couldn't log on, I'd just break out your pdf. I like your characterization of the Freedom Phalanx, which was a surprise because I can't stand Manticore in-game. He struts around as if he's a hardcore badass, just because he's the only one in the comic who can tie his shoes without drooling on the instruction book.

Toward the middle of your story there were several times I wanted to grab Positron by the shoulders and shake him out of his dithering. Statesman's dance was a nice touch.

The second story has committed the awful crime of not being finished yet!

"Positron Gets Some" is a quick mission seemingly set before "The Course of Superhero Romance" and pitting you against Carnies. It's a defeat-all, which is kind of a drag once you hit 50 and don't need XP anymore.
