Anyone create art like this?

Not to start trouble, but a friend of mine pointed me to this gallery. What this artist does is take screenshots of in-game images and photoshops them to create dynamic new images.

Does anyone do something like this for CO*? Looks like a really neat way to keep characters looking true to their in-game roots.

Say, that's a pretty neat style. Not sure if we have people around here representative of it, though.

Makes me wonder if that's some strategic blurring. Still looks very nice. I haven't seen anyone around here who does that type of work.

that actually looks really cool, may have to take a stab at that seeing as i can't draw

It looks like either screenshot editry, or actual CG work.

...Not to detract any, but that's just the general impression I get from it (having seen similar works, though nothing with quite that exact style).

Of course, that's just over a cursory skim/glance, and not any detail work. Hard to make out the difference at smaller resolutions. :s

Wouldn't be too tough to do, but what would you want different in a piece of art, that you don't get from your game screen shot? Smoother curves maybe? Strategic lighting? The overlaying wouldn't be hard to do, that is to say drop in portraits in the back or smaller "team mates"... What I think this comes down to is the coolness or slickness of your graphic cards abilities, then everything else is just smoothing and swirl adding.

This is like 80% photo manip, 20% artwork if even.

+ a little bit of havng a good enough rig to be able to take decent screenies.

Well, actually... The process apparently is explained on that site right here: Behind The Scenes

I was curious, because... My experience looking at WoW was VERY brief (Blech), but I did not recall it looking quite like that (Regardless of rig).

It's interesting. Take a sceenshot and then not only photoshop edit it like crazy, but then paint onto it.

Not positive how much freehand painting they are doing, but it's interesting.

Me? Sure... Hey, I'm a grubby, raw penciller at heart, so... I loves me some pure came-from-my-brain and out-of-my-pencil, but whatever, hehe.

Sounds like they enjoy it and t does look nice. Fancified screenshots.

I've seen people do slight photoshopping to screenshots when they make their own Comics, but nothing to this degree before.

It's a lot of work, no doubt there. >>

I was more trying to pinpoint the technique used, to maybe better help out in finding an artist that specialized in that sort of thing.

I sort-of know (as in, technically I know them, but technically, they're a [censored], and I downplay the association thereby) at least one person that specializes in this sort of thing, and it's very cool and snazzy.

Technically, it's like standard photography. Only taken to a bit of a more artistic lean then photography already is.

...Digital photography, plus!

^^ soooo, he takes a screenies and photoshops it. Yup, that's pretty much how I thought the process went.

Yup, but it's still pretty cool. Especially if you've got a client specifically looking for that kind of look. I mean, it's not much different than what's done here to show off potential costume designs, but using this person's technique, it'd be possible to take a player's in-game avatar and replace their Nemesis Staff with some other cool item of power. I know it might not seem like much but sometimes that's all some people really want.

It is nice work... my wife's company does this kind of thing, but entirely from their imagination "using" premade and altered elements. They call it a "Photoshop Steelcage"... kind of like what we did in this forum a couple of weeks ago... thanks for the background on this, I may do this with one of my WoW toons whenever I get back to that game...

I'm impressed by his avatar. LoL. The movement is subtle, but enough to catch your eye. How'd he do that?

I wonder if, "by the book" there are any legal restictions there? I mean, with that process you're actually using artwork/assets from the game to create the final image.

It's an interesting approach though.

Yeah, the only stuff i can think of would be some of those coh wallpapers. If you go to them there are several fan made ones like that.

There is also some coh comics that a few people make. I dont have anything like that as I dont know how to use photoshop but I have seen some really cool demoedited/photoshoped worked by the Spectacular Sparky available at www.cohcomics.com and City of Heroes: Invasion (which i dont have the url on hand). Both of those have some frames that were demo edited and then photoshoped to be really cool.

I believe he used that video editor most people use to make fab base videos for the game, the name escapes me, but there are threads on how to use it somewhere on the site. The animation is the normal "waiting" movement...

but remember that that is a 800k avatar ... doesn't really matter but ... it's far from the good old 4k gif/jpg files.

The same time of work that Kincade will do with a limited edition print... they'll actually 'touch it up' with a bit of paint to make the details stand out and make it unique.
