Rereturn of the Leviathan Guild

OK, I can't let that little blurb be Prof. Candelabra's only description here. However, my research into the academic world of Paris in the the 19th century reveals it to be... complicated.

What year exactly have we Leviathaners leapt forward from? And how long have we been assumed to be together before then?

Also: Six years of casual play begins to look an awful lot like one year of hardcore play.

Also Cas, if it were me, I'd just roll with it, pick the rough year that works best for your character, and if it winds up being contradictory, the man was simply ahead of his time, or a bit out of touch, both of which are fine for men of dubious sanity anyway.

Prolouge:

To Lord XXXXX:

My lord, I’m sorry to inform you that today, January 6, 1887 we have lost Countess Clink Clank, Patches, Professor Candelabra, Baronne Cimitere, Civil Twilight, and Aluriel Twilight. As you know, we had sent them to investigate the disturbances occurring in Bath, particularly the incident involving Lady XXXXXXXXXX and the apparition. Our observers note the squad had entered near the old Temple of Minerva, descending past the spring font and into the abandoned aqueducts. We do not know what has happened since then, but other members of the Guild are anxiously divining to see what has become of the missing heroes. One of them is already spouting forth about “crossing time and oceans, slipping down the time stream to the sea, powers lost in the tides,” but I have nothing further to report on that front. We are considering sending in a two-man team to investigate the area further, but are awaiting volunteers.

I will keep you apprised of the situation as it develops.

Sincerely,

XXXXXXX
Guild Leader

Ah, 1887- before reform, post-Napoleon. Then- et Voila!

Professeur Emile Candelabra had been considered one of the leading lights of L'Academie d' Paris' faculty of sciences. He was, however, denied tenure and subsequently fired for endangering students after a death and a maiming resulted from a tragic ballooning accident. Shaken at the loss of innocent life, but adamant in the knowledge that great height was necessary for his Oscillating Aetheroscope to revolutionize the world of optics, Prof. Candelabra gathered up the remnants of his fortune and traveled east, vowing to launch his Aetheroscope from the highest of the Himalayas.

He vanished from western society for four years, and may have remained permanently lost but for the intervention of the Leviathan Guild. In the case afterwards known as the 'Yeti Incident', a remarkably transformed Prof. Candelabra was responsible for the rescue of the premier Leviathan field team from the upper slopes of Nanga Parbat. Demonstrating heretofore unheard-of abilities, Candelabra repelled attacking monstrosities and flew the team to safety, healing them with a light he described as 'ripped from zee 'eavens zemselves'.

For services rendered (and to keep a watchful eye upon him) Candelabra was invited to join the Guild, which he did. He glows softly, drifts in the air when distracted, and has been known to speak in tongues even more alien than French. Whether these voices are related to the monstrous forms he manifested in the Guild casefile 'Monsters Within', or are truly, as he claims, the voices of angels, has yet to be determined.

Some housekeeping before we launch:

We'll meet at the sewer entrance near the Yellow Line in Atlas Park. Anyone who wants an invite to the actual LG SG is more than welcome to one and yes, that includes access to the bins. The SG is just us and Mr. Text, so likely no one will take your stuff, but mistakes do happen, so use at your own risk.

We'll take care of all of that, and I'll provide an in-game reason for the other members of the SG (all stupid names belong to Mr. Text, fyi) once we escape for the sewers. The role play will begin once we're actually in the sewers, in the interest of doing the best we can within the limits of the game.

Since we're running two nights a week, I'm going to be fairly observant of the time slot, starting on time and ending on time. I'll also post a summary of the nights adventures here, also in character.

See you at six!

so is there still room in this?

Yes, we still have room for a Warrior from a Lost Civilization and a Mysterious Master of the Occult!

Roll someone up and join us!

mysterious master of the occult sounds fun. i will read thru this topic and try to catch up on what i'm supposed to do.

I sum up:

The Leviathan Guild is THE group who investigates the supernatural in Victorian England. Comprised of English citizens and allies, this particular group finds itself whisked into the sewers of Paragon through events which have yet to be explained. Each member represents an archetype of the period. (Although, since this is my leisure time and I don't want to deal with crap, we're the most progressive set of Victorians EVER, in regards to race, gender, etc)

So for Mysterious Master of the Occult, well, that's just want it sounds like! Do you hunt vampires? Do you dabble in That Which Man was Not Meant to Know? Have you mastered the powers of darkness? Of light? Fire? Ice? Do you do battle armed with a book and sword? Where are you from, what's your name, how did you find us?

Think about it, and post your story here, and I'll edit your name into the prologue.

nice, that helps, i'll give the story some thought and post it soon enough. is there some kinda powers i'm supposed to stick to? or whatever i come up with long as it goes with the group concept?

I think the rest of us just decided what AT and powerset we wanted to try and shoehorned it into the Victorian concept.

Edit: I'm playing a ff/elec defender, myself.

I went the other way. i looked at the achtypes and thought of a character to fit. Decided which powersets made sense for each concept, made some builds and decided which 2 I'd prefer to play. From there I looked at what other people were wanting to play and made my final decision.

Then decided it didn't matter and I'd shoehorn at least one of the characters into any of the slots.

..and by "shoehorn" I mean ram down your throat

HERES HER STORY. HOPE I DIDNT WRITE WAY TOO LONG LOL.

The Mysterious Master of the Occult:

Issabelle Dean was a poor but happy woman who lived in England with her husband and 3 children. Her family was her life. She cared for her family and her husband was a hard worker. Unfortunately, he didnt make very good wages so the children were also obligated to have jobs. And here is where the tragedy starts.

In a period of 2 years, all of her children had died as a result of child labour. Her middle child died in the coal mines. Her oldest child died, stuck in a chimney he was sweeping, and her youngest died in a factory accident.

Issabelle had gone insane with grief and had to be kept medicated and hospitalized. Her husband became a soldier in order to afford her medical care and he would visit her everyday he could. But then her husband was called away to Egypt in 1882 which was the beginning of its occupation by British troops. He wrote her everyday and sent her packages. But she was so "out of touch" with reality, she was never able to actually read his letters.

Not even a year had passed before he was killed in the line of duty and decorated as a hero.

After the loss of her husband, she could no longer afford hospital care and was forced out and stayed to herself in her lonely house.

Finally reading over the letters and opening the packages from her husband, she was amazed at what he sent her. Books and items of magical properties. And a last letter read :

"My Sweet. As a last ditch to regain my lost heritage, i journeyed to Egypt to recover my family heirlooms. I never told you, but I am from a long line of men who practice and master the study of the hidden wisdom. Having fell in love with you, I disregarded my heritage and was content being in your loving arms for the remainder of my life. But if you recieved this letter then I can no longer be with you in this world of flesh. However if you want my spirit and the spirit of our children to accompany you thru this life, read the books i sent you. They are powerfully unnatural in the way that you can only read them once. And when you do, the book will disappear into another dimension. But dont worry, reading a book once, imprints the knowledge into your mind for the remainder of your life. And even if you dont understand what you are reading, once you finish the last word of a book and it disappears, you will be endowed not only with the full memory and knowledge of the books contents, but the ability to use them how you see fit. I trust you with this knowledge above anyone else and know that you will make me proud. Send for me. Send for our kids. Whatever shape, whatever form, I wait to be by your side again. I love you, Belle."

6 months of studying along with mental, psychological and spiritual training and Issabelle became a master of subjects such as magic, alchemy, extra-sensory perception, astrology, spiritualism and numerology. She embraced the study of a deeper spiritual reality that extends beyond pure reason and the physical sciences.

In the victorian era, a popular form of entertainment involved 'spectacles' where paranormal events, such as hypnotism, communication with the dead (by way of mediumship or channelling), ghost conjuring and the like, were carried out to the delight of crowds and participants. Such activities were more popular at this time than in other periods of recent Western history. And this is exactly how Issabelle paid her bills.

She was known as the "Mistress of Prophecy". Her shows were very popular and her reputation was that of an eccentric quality. She always showed them just enough to wow them but not scare them. But she had caught the eye of the Leviathan Guild and was recruited as an expert to help them track a vicious and smart serial killer by the name of Jack the Ripper.

Even though history will say Jack was never caught. The true knowledge is within the guild that Issabelle tracked him down with an elite team. And they were so amazed at her abilities, they recruited her as a permanent part of the team and gave her the handle of "Prophecy Mistress".

She is an Illusion/Rad troller.

Having always been a master of illusions and summoning spirits, her husband and her 3 children are with her always and will protect her in times of great need.

Later in Paragon, her time in the sewers gave her a new ability to use the chemicals to either heal or even greatly weaken any given target.

I presume this is the door by the stairs, underneath the tram? Anyway, that's where I've parked the Prof. See you there in a couple of hours!

Oh, and woohoo! A controller! Kheldian status protection ftw!

From the diary of Countess Clink Clank:

Stranded in the future, with only De Profundus, my least favorite mystic, to offer insight into why. My squad found itself in strange sewers, surrounded by the undead, weakened. We fought forward anyway, determined to clear up this most recent mess involving Bath and the foolish gentry dabbling where they ought not. But we were not, as we believed, in Bath, England, but rather a strange, future America, in Paragon City. A later trip to the biblotech, and a longer tutorial on how to access the reference system (computers, I am told, are based off of [u] looms?! [u]), reveals just how much this country has grown and changed since our departure in 1887.

Emerging from the vile tunnels, who should contact us telepathically but De Profundus?! He told us he had predicted our arrival, to everyone's surprise but the Prophecy Mistress, we were in the Americans, in the City of Paragon, and he would contact us later. He advised us to seek out the one known as Miss Liberty, and indeed, she helped us regain some of our lost powers.

Civil Twilight attempted to communicate with some of the natives, but while we all seem to speak English, I am unsure real raport was established. Exploring, we found a train in the sky, and went to the Kings Row, hopefully to speak with him. But we found no king, and lost Patches in the process. We eventually tracked Patches down by following his thoughts of "Patches? Trolls? Kitty?"

In the Land of the Trolls we had better luck, meeting with one of the consultbury and aiding him in his fight against the minions of evil. We agreed to meet with the one known as Flux on our next assembly and among ourselves agreed to serve as beacons in this dark modern world, until the Fates return us home.

Some OOC notes:

We will complete the Hollows arcs.

Remember that just because you, the player, knows what's going on, doesn't mean your charecter does.

There will be NO TEAM on January 20th.

i'd be very disappointed if we couldnt finish this. i joined 3 superteams in the last couple weeks and it seems like they end as quick as they start

or maybe its my bad luck, i dont know.

had lots of fun and sorry for the couple crashes, slowing everything up. i'm sure it will get better and i cant wait for us to "regain our powers" and really start cuttin loose.

Who said anything about not finishing? I have an excellent track record.

But on January 20th, I'll be glued to the television watching the presidential inauguration.

Not to worry, Ghost- you're in good hands. These folks are good, consistent players and won't flake out on you. They've been very kind to me and my connection issues for the past few months, and I'm sure you'll find them just as accommodating. And this particular theme team has been in the planning stages for a long time now, so I doubt people are going to abandon it lightly.

In a less serious tone, it was a great start Tuesday! I've already started piling up IOs and inf here on Guardian in anticipation of busting into the teens tonight. If you see a bunch of lvl 15 acc IOs stored in base, those are mine. I'll be donating them to the group after we hit SO levels, but for now: hands off! Heck, if we follow the rate of level gain we had in the Refugee villain group, doubled because of playing twice a week, I may have to start nailing down my permanent IO sets. And that's hard to do when I'm not sure what powers I'll be grabbing...
