I just upgraded to new, shinier rig myself and like Obsidius, this was the first reference I thought of as I was prepping to transfer all my files over to the new system. Thanks a bunch Bill! You saved me many hours of waiting!

As a side note, I was also one of those folks who ran into the installer appending the installation location with "\city of heroes" (i.e. I selected c:\games\city of heroes" and it'd try to do a fresh install to "c:\games\city of heroes\city of heroes"). It took me a little while to figure out why the heck it was popping into a full install! I didn't realize at first that installer was adding in "\city of heroes" to the installation location until I read some of the responses in this thread and looked at my installation path more closely. Once I realized what it was doing, I just selected "c:\games" as my location instead (so the game would install to "c:\games\city of heroes" instead of "c:\games\city of heroes\city of heroes") and it worked like a charm!

Got a new system that should be here Monday, as usual one of Billz threads saved me some headaches.

As of an issue or two ago, the -renderthread 1 flag is enabled by default.

However, the game will not use more than 2 cores.

In other words, no, you'll need to seek other causes for your framerate issues. Best bet is to post dxdiag and hijackthis logs to a new thread in the tech forum.

On a quad core box can you use 2 each in a dualboxing scenario?

Yes an no. You can set affinity for two separate installs of CoX, so that each one will only use two specific procs. Not sure how well it works though. Never tried it, as I only have one machine that could do that and it is my wife's machine, so I seldom mess with it.

*If you have a dual core or hyperthreaded processor, add the -renderthread to the shortcut's target line for the shortcut that the updater created. Example: My shortcut's target line looks like d:\games\coh\cohupdater.exe -renderthread 1

[/ QUOTE ]

OK, about this part - My new laptop has a dual core Intel Centrino 2 processor and my shortcut's target line has quotation marks around it:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe"

Should I eliminate the quotation marks, or just add a space and then -renderthread 1 so that it reads:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -renderthread 1

Add a space, then -renderthread 1.

HOWEVER, this is the new default (to utilize multi-core processors if present), so you probably don't need it anymore. Of course, using it won't hurt anything.

Thanks. I left it off and so far (knock on wood) the game has run seamlesly for me. I have had no problems with Vista or my graphics card.

Also, a big thanks to BillZBubba for this guide and the time it saved me.

A gazillion thanks to BillZBubba for this great info (and also to the kind folks in Player Questions who linked me to this thread) I really think this should be stickied somewhere.

Thanks for your post too Manoa. I ran into the same issue and fixed it by reading what you did. This community is awesome

Thanks for the guide Bill, used it some time ago for getting CoXTest set up, and decided to finally move CoX to another drive last night.

Ran into one problem, I wasn't getting the prompt for the install location. I had copied the whole CoH folder to D: (but I was too chicken to delete the original) so the Updater was still looking at the original folder.

I was able to fix it by changing the name of the original folder, then running the Updater (copied from D: to the desktop) threw up the install location prompt. A quick login, confirm that, the chatlog in the D:\CoX was the one being updated, and now I can free up some space on my main drive without worries.

So if anyone else has run into this minor issue, just rename your original folder before running the new copy of the Updater.

EDIT: And this still isn't stickied!?!

Gonna try this tonight on my new PC, seems pretty straightforward.

1. Make copy of entire CoH directory from old PC
2. Copy to desired directory in new PC
3. Run cohupdater.exe
4. Voila!

Did I get it right?

Yep, it was exactly this easy. Thanks Billzbubba!

ok...this didn't work for me at all. i have both the CoH and CoHtest save under my program files. here is what i am doing. i go to the program files and select Cohtest and copy the CohUpdater.exe to my desktop, and then i copy a shortcut of that copy to the desktop. i then change the second shortcut to the -test and click ok. i run the file. nothing pops up or prompts me to install in the Cohtest place.

what am i doing wrong!

Does this still work?

I've been trying it for two days now, and it never goes as planned. I've followed this and the official test serve installation process multiple times now, and it always results in the same thing happening. The updater ultimate ends up "fixing" files at less than 10kb/sec, stating that it's going to take upwards of 10 hours but never getting more than 1/4 of the way through. Sometimes I don't even get the CohTest installation popup when I run the shortcut for the updater.

What am I doing wrong?

A few things not working.

Firstly, following the instructions, the default path it chooses to install the new copy is /cohtest.

Secondly, the install is just simply not working correctly. I have tried multiple different methods, and they have all ended up with the "fixing files" problem. Aside from completely uninstalling the original game, I have tried everything I can think of.

I have a big question, i have done everything you said to do on installing test server, i even named it the same thing for purpose of ease. but after i copied the shortcut of the cohtest updater and pasted it to my desktop, i go to change the target line by adding "-test" after ".exe", i get this message, "The name 'C:\Documents and Settings\jackfortman\Desktop\cohupdater.exe -test' specified in the Target box is not valid. Make sure the path and file name are correct. " please help me!! i feel dumb but idk what else to do but ask lol.

Close the quote after .exe then add the -test.

...cohupdater.exe" -test

not

...cohupdater.exe -test"

It's true. This game is NOT rocket surgery. - BillZBubba

I have to wonder if those having problems are having those problems because they insist on using the program files directory.

As I don't use directories with spaces in the name and I don't ever install games to Program Files, I've yet to experience any oddities, nor do I ever need quotation marks in my target lines.

Be well, people of CoH.

Everything worked up to the point of opening the copy of cohupdater... it never asked me if I wanted to install etc. Right now it is attempting to "fix" the existing files.... it is showing 72 hours to fix..... I followed instructions to a T but I don't think this is working for me.

My City of Heroes directory is in Program Files. For the instructions to work I had to select "Program Files" when prompted to select the new directory. The Updater automatically wanted to use C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\. If I choose C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\, the updater would want to look in C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\City of Heroes\.

There is a Guide in the Gameplay/Technical Issues & Bugs forum section.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.
