Discussion: COH/COV Myspace!

Let's see....
Approximately 100,000 subscribers TIMES $15 a month EQUALS 1.5 Million US Dollars a month.
Yeah, no way in heck they could possibly afford to have a TV commercial air during the Heros TV show or put a commercial on the screen as the preview to Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
I mean after all... if you can't afford it and you can't be certain you'll hit your target demographic why bother. Right? That clicking sound you're hearing is my eyes rolling in my head.
MySpace may indeed be free, and you get what you pay for.

Yeah yeah, I've already heard in other posts by amateur marketeers that think they can run NCsoft better than the guys that do run NCsoft.
Making a coh myspace page was very cool in my opinion and I'm not going to pretend to outthink the decision makers.
And doing one thing does not automatically oppose you to other ideas like you seem to infer.
son: "thanks mom for the shirts"
mom: "which one are you wearing?"
son: "the blue one"
mom: "why? don't you like the red one?"
What a bunch of frakking tools.
First of all, Television is the suck. Especially broadcast Television. Commercials are the worst form of advertisement. Anymore, people are editing commercials out of their DVR copies or if you're actually watching live TV, glazing over during the commercial break with dull cow eyes.
The return on investment for a TV Commercial only makes sense if you have a subscriber base like WoW. Even they don't advertise on Broadcast TV.
The bottom line is : A 13 year old could code up a MySpace page in 20 minutes. There is no drain on resources here, just another way to network people who love and play City of X.
Cease and desist with the dickhattery already for crapsake.

Pseudointelluctualism strikes again...
There are costs associated with business. This is called overhead.
Can you tell us what the total cost is for Cryptic and NCSoft for the following items?
<ul type="square">[*] Property tax/ building lease[*] Building security system maintenance[*] Utilities[*] Employee Salaries[*] State Taxes[*] Federal Taxes[*] Software licensing[*] Hardware licensing (router/ switch support & maintenance)[*] Tariffs (if any)[*] Bandwidth costs[*] Workstation maintenance and other IT costs[*] Server maintenance costs[*] Road show costs[*] Giveaway items[*] Any of the other (possibly innumerable) costs I can't even think of[/list]I don't pretend to understand the accounting structure of NCSoft and Cryptic, like I don't pretend to understand the maintenance of a nuclear submarine But I do understand there's more to most businesses than revenue and advertising.
But there again, SOE put out movie theater adds for EQ2, and it worked for them, right?
Erm...

Gee, if there was only a hit TV show about super heroes that they could pretty much be a goldmine as a target audience for. I see your point, but this is one year that this aspect kind of fails. Before this year, it's dead on.

A commercial would have been good for that show. I really think product placement would have been cool though. Zach in a CoH t-shirt, or better yet Sylar in a CoV one. It's shown Micah playing video games, have him playing CoH.
Back on topic though, I don't use myspace. A couple people have tried to get me interested by showing off their pages, but that usually turned me off of the whole concept even more. I do think that the City of myspace page was well done (certainly the best myspace page I've seen, acknowledging that I generally stay away from there unless someone I know tells me to go check their page, so my experience is limited).
An official City of page won't get me to start using myspace, but that's not the intention. A myspace page might get others playing the game. I don't think anyone is going to stop playing because there's a myspace page. To that extent it's a good thing. It will probably do more to promote the game to new people than the comic book did. I only hope this isn't going to be the extent of their advertising.

Actually, thats a bit contrary to what one would learn in Advertising 101, but I can see what you meant. The reality is, however, that telivision advertising is a VERY harsh, expensive, and rather elitist sector. What channel do you use? What timeslot? How do you know if you're reaching your target demographic?

Heroes? A show about heroes advertising a game about heroes? Or yeah, pick a superhero movie. FX was reshowing the heck out of Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 all around the release of part 3. Same with X-Men and X-Men 2 last year. Target audience for a superhero game might be people who watch superhero movies.
The Myspace name is actually City of Heroes/Villains. Look for City of Heroes/Villians in search section if you use Mozilla ans have trouble getting on myspace from directly from the link.

More publicity, the better. This game has the potential to far exceed WoW if only more people simply knew about it... but then TR would exceed CoH still
Just when you thought the forumite e-drama was about as pathetic as it could be, now we've got a whinefest because somebody spent 60 seconds pasting coh.com art on a myspace page. Thanks for the reminder of why I stopped posting here.
Thank you sirs for the nice myspace page. You are on my top 8. Now what else would be nice is a CoX layout for me to put on my page so I may help advertise this awesome game even more.

Myspace costs time, only. and is 24/7.
A TV ad would cost time and money to make the commerical.
And approximately $171,000 for a 30 second slot during heroes. Once.
[/ QUOTE ]
Also:
"So big corporations should keep in mind that ads don't have to be 30-second cinematic experiences to get our attention. The lesson to be learned is that ads need to be relevant. That's why online advertising works so well.
Boring blue text links on Google (Charts) or Yahoo! (Charts) may lack the glitz and sex appeal of a slickly produced commercial but they get the job done. Sure, a big difference between a search ad and a TV ad during say, "Heroes" or "Grey's Anatomy" is that the consumer is choosing to look for something. A TV ad, more often than not, is an interruption.
"TV advertising is essentially an uninvited guest. You are watching '24', the world's about to blow up, and suddenly there's a damn commercial," said the University of Texas' Burns."
From here.
TV has a wide reach, but it's generally pretty shallow. The vast majority of people who would see a CoH/V ad on "Heroes" wouldn't probably pay attention to it. In order for any sort of cut through to occur, NCsoft (who pay for the promotion of the game afaik) would need to run the ad multiple times. Which is why it ends up costing millions of dollars to buy advertising time on TV. And I'd strongly doubt that NCsoft has a seven figure advertising budget for CoH/V this year.
Online, however, the costs of advertising are cheap, the people are already online (because not everyone in TVland is) and if they are interested enough to click through to a MySpace link, they might be interested enough to even try the game out on a trial. And once they've tried the game, CoH/V is in a prime position to actually generate revenue from these people.
NCsoft's aim is not to generate awareness of CoH/V, it's to promote trial and purchase. MySpace is certainly a more efficient way of achieving that aim than TV.

... which also ignores that marketing department lawyers may not wish to sell ad time to products that could be seen as passing off on the televised IP, or may wish to charge more for CoH/V advertising in order to be "officially licensed" or some such.
If I knew nothing about CoH/V and I saw a City of Heroes ad during "Heroes", it wouldn't be a big jump for me to assume that "Heroes" now had its own video game. Which is the last thing the company who could actually make money off a real "Heroes" video game would ever want to happen.
As for CoH/V appearing before a Marvel film? Not going to happen. MUO will get plastered from here to eternity on Marvel-related releases, but CoH/V is a direct competitor despite being produced by the same games studio. Marvel isn't going to allow their movies to promote a competing product when they have something on the way (and I've got no idea if Marvel comics ever had CoH/V ads in them, or if they still do now that MUO is on the way).

Or a television channel the focuses on video games. There are lots of places to use targetted ads that would have a positive affect.

You mean that channel I avoid because, frankly, it brings up too much irritation at the death of a another, much better channel?

In the end, its all the same pie. NCSoft pays Cryptic to continue developement so Cryptic's slice (as big or small as it may be) comes from NCSoft's pie. I'd rather see the sliver being used to improve the game and fix long standing issues instead of being used to create another webpage that will not (based on experience with the COX page and the items trimmed from it as 'fat') be maintained properly once it 'gets old'.
[/ QUOTE ]
Except the pie is already split.
It's like you want to give the Jones more pie (or take it away) after they already took their share home.
NCSoft has obligations to it's owner(s) - it needs to make profit.
NCSoft and Cyrptic decided how they were going to split they pie as it came in before they got it. That, combined with their need to make a profit to satisfy their owners, means they are not going to take the part of their budget marked for advertising (such as they do) and give it to cryptic for free.
And that assumes that having some of the community rep types even took any actual time away from something else. If it just took up "free time" then they come out even, ahead if they even get one more sub!
