City of Heroes/Villains Live Events Poll!
You've told me that before. As soon as I can get the money together, I do plan on visiting you in Phoenix PMan.
Until then, Indy all the way. Sorry, but Indy > Phoenix.
I agree with Indy. If'n any of you live around the chicago area, you'll kindly remind everyone that the drive between say... Northwest Indiana to downtown Chicago (approx 20-30 miles, includes most of I80, I90, I94, and even most of the upper I65 interchange lately) is now approximately the same amount of time it'd take someone to bike from New York to Austin, TX. The main thoroughfares are totally hosed, with plenty of single-lane, flagger-manned expressway action. Seriously. And yes, with it being construction season, all the spillover screws up everything else, from jams at lights that can't handle the throughput to madcrazy parking fees because everywhere else is tore up with construction bits)
However, I like Indy, and not just because I live in Indiana. Every convention/event/whatever (business or pleasure) I've been to in Indy has been above and beyond just about anywhere else I've been, even against places like Orlando (all tourist-ed out), Atlanta (terrible venues), LA (smog.... and creepy california people).
Although i'd be interested in one if it was in Austin (Hello?! The only reason why Texas is allowed to exist!), San Francisco, or Boston. (all nice-ish places that had events/conventions/company thingies that didn't suck).
So, sounds like we're having it in Indy!
OMG! whats with all the mid-western posters-- what about- PHILLY or ALLENTOWN or NEW YORK or BOSTON!!! east coast peeps-- it's time to speak up!

I vote for DC! Midway down the east coast to get all the people from the mid-Atlantic and it wouldn't be a far drive from NYC/NJ or even South Carolina.

Yeah, we could do that, but then the hotel rooms cost twice as much.
Indy cheap hotel=10 min taxi ride to downtown=$5-$10: Cost: $40 per night
East Coast hotel=WHO KNOWS HOW LONG taxi ride to wherever in those 8 states you want the convention in=$10-$50: Cost: $60 per night.
Indy: CHEAP hotels, CHEAP gas prices (currently at $3.04), CHEAP space for the convention (they'll save THOUSANDS here vs anywhere else, cause that's what Indy's all about for tourism, conventions and racing), GREAT road systems (465=circle around city, 65=north/south going straight through downtown, 70=East/West highway going straight through downtown, end result? anywhere in Indy to anywhere in Indy in under 20 min), Central location in the country (30ish hour drive to NY, 48 hour drive to Califonia) Low Crime Rate, Mild Summers, Mild Winters (Summer temps in the low to mid 90s, Winter temps around 10-20) oh, and the Colts rule.
East Coast: High hotel cost, High fuel prices, good public transport, but which of the 8 states on the east coast is the con in?, high cost for convention space, crappy road system for those who drive there, High crime rate (depending on where it is, but especially DC), FAR too crowded if held in NY or similiar, 30 hour drive to Central US, 78+ hour drive to Califonia. Cold and rainy most of the year in my experience. (in the negatives in the winter, lucky to see 75 in the summer in some places, especially coastal cities).
West Coast: REALLY far away for most of the countries population, California is awesome, but it's hot as hell in the summer. VERY high fuel rate, VERY high hotel rates, meh for public transport, not as many hotels as in Indy per square mile (meaning sold out as far as an hour away for some events), higher crime rate than indy, 78+ hour drive from east coast, 48 hour drive from Central US, high food cost (I've been there, McDonalds is expensive as hell there IMO), oh, and it's where NCSoft and Cryptic is, so the devs and stuff don't get to travel (and you know that's one of the perks for this kind of thing is traveling the country to see fans). Devs not as happy if they have to drive 1-2 hours to get to the event and then, since it's so close, drive home at night only to go back the next day. No way to justify hotel room costs if you live an hour or so away.
The reason Indy works so well is that if you put a population map up on the wall, you'll see that 50% of the US lives east of Indiana/Chicago and the other 50% lives West of Indy/Chicago. You don't want to be in Chicago for something like this cause the roads suck and the hotel rooms are outrageous, food is expensive and the winters get so cold you freeze to death, the summers hit 110 for weeks straight (I lived in Chi town for 4 years, REALLY hot there in the summer, the lake does funky things to the weather). Indy had better highways, cheaper rates, costs less to fly to than other cities in the US cause it's a transportation hub, it has cheaper rates for convention events because we're used to getting 100,000 people for a weekend (Indy 500, Brickyard, Formula 1, soon to be Superbowl, PanAm Games in 88, or was that 84, Star Wars Cellebrations TWICE, Gencon, ect......) Indy is THE place to have a convention. Period.
My final arguement to prove the cost effectiveness of Indy.
I bought a pack of Camels this morning for $3.50. Chicago is about $4.50, NY is what? $5-$6.00? Same with california.
You want to know where the cost of living and travel accomidations are cheap, look at ciggarrette prices. They tell you EVERYTHING you need to know. If Camels cost $5.00 where you live, then you'll also be paying $60 for a cheap motel. If they cost $3-$4 you'll be paying $40 for the same motel.
Indy it is.
Oh, and the best reason:
Mrs. Statesman loves her mommy and daddy (who live in Indy), and we should pay for her to see them. That way, Statesman is in a good mood because Mrs. Statesman is happy.
LIVE EVENTS, YEAH! YEAH BABY!!!
ROLEPLAY-LIKE PROTAGONIST ROLES FOR LIVE QUESTS/EVENTS, SELECTED FROM SERVER-BY-SERVER PLAYERBASE, YEAH BABY!!!
YEAH!
Even with all it's bugs and exploitable errors, THE MATRIX ONLINE prospered as the DOMINANT MMORPG for a good eight months purely for the fact that it did HANDS-ON, LIVE STORYLINE EVENTS that changed and altered the storylines of the following events based upon the outcomes. It wasn't "roleplay enforced", it was just so gracefully "in character" even non-roleplayers were roleplaying. It was probably the best mmorpg experience I've ever had in my life outside of NWN or NWN2, as far as roleplaying goes. MXO would've been better than CoH now (and it was for the roleplay factor. We have tons of roleplayers on Virtue, and they're all decent, great folks. But it'd be taken to a WHOLE 'NOTHER LEVEL if roleplay was validated and magnified by hands-on, live events ran by administrators and development team members. ESPECIALLY if one could earn themselves temporary protagonist positions within events. HELL YES.)
"You should play my game 2 earn magic sword."
Me: "Meh. Magic sword, Smagic Shword."
"You should play it 4 destiny and justice."
Me: "DESTINY -AND- JUSTICE?!?! HELL YES! SIGN ME UP! FOR EIGHT ACCOUNTS!"
Even after MXO got all it's bugs fixed when it got passed to the new development team and company that handles it, it fell far down the list of most prominent MMORPGs because there were no longer those fantastic, exciting, incredibly fun hands-on, live events. Check your charts, read backlogs! It's so terribly true it's not even funny.
I can name entire guilds stuffed into Ventrilo chats from World of Warcraft that have ranted with me about the loss of hands-on, live roleplay events whom I know would buy a copy of CoH at the drop of a frickin' hat if they knew it would happen here. I'd buy another copy of CoH even though I have one, just to feel safe.
Then another. And then I'd hack the crap out of FRAPS so I could constantly make music videos of my participation in hands-on, live roleplay events.
SOMEBODY SUPPORT ME ON THIS! ENTHUSIAM, COMPEL! COMPEL! COMPELLLLLLL!
Superlion, they mean live in real life events. Conventions. there's no indication that we'll have private GM's here in the game. while I think it's a great idea, that's not what the thread's about... Did you actually read the poll?
Please read my FEAR/Portal/HalfLife Fan Fiction!

A Philly-Allentown would be good. Most of the ones I have seen were usually west coast or in the mid-west; leaving a lot of the east coasters out to dry.

o,o thanks, though.. those look more buttonish than pin, but that could easily just be the photo. ^^ when I picture the badge pins, I see something like the pins that boyscouts or military have (or is it cubscouts? I'll ask my brother, he was in and might know).. sorta a cross between
these from the KD, and maybe some of the more ornate clothing buttons and/or cuff links that government and military officials have on their uniforms..

Oh. Convention things?
Cool. Uh. Ignore my post. Optimism and sleep deprevation caused me to read things incorrectly.

A man can dream.
Allentown um no hotels to speak of and rampent crime . noooo I say the only answer is in Rhode Island
Darn it I broke another. These things are not meant for my hands to ever touch
<QR>
Ex Libris, Lighthouse, etc: the poll only let us choose one server.
For my money, our SG/VG/etc is spread over Infinity (which I marked in the poll) and Champion.
I went to the NCSoft Meetup at Howie's Game Shack in Orange County. That was a good location for Southern California. (I drove from Long Beach. A friend in my SG and his son drove from near Magic Mountain theme park, which was pretty darn far indeed, driving an hour or more on the freeways.)
The US population is concentrated in the Northeast and Midwest on the poll so far both because of history (those states have been around longer) and because of weather.
If you pick the Spring or Fall in either of those areas, you should end up with more than enough people.
If you pick a high-pop but multiple-distraction area like SoCal, without the rest of NCSoft's games to pull people in...
Well, I think you may need to advertise these things with in-game popup windows, like you did with the issue 9 "technical issues and new features" popup window.
Or maybe the game launcher, except I think most people click without reading, unlike me.
You'll always have a disproportionately high percentage of forum readers show up, though in some cases they tell their forum-avoiding SGs about things
There are enough hotels in the Allentown area to accomodate conventions, there have been quite a few already. While there is crime, it isn't as bad as larger cities. And yes, I am from Allentown.
Ok, east coasters, here's a question for you.
How much is a motel room today? Call, find out, post.
MOTEL, you know, dirt cheap crappy room, the kind gamers can afford That's your base for cost of the convention.
FYI, Indy right now with the race 2 weeks away and the track being open, I found $30.00 per night. If you guys can beat that, I'll go with East coast too (even though geographicly it makes no sense).

There's a Raddison in Orlando (MainGate) that goes for $39.00 a night. Beautiful rooms, conciege service, indoor heated pool, poolside bar and a Pizza Hut. Outside bar and pool...
Umm back to the mid-west
Hold the Convention in:
Cincinnati, Ohio
Low Crime (if the bengals are in an off season), low hotel rates, non-smoking Ohio (if you like that sort of stuff), brand new expanded convention center, the beautiful riverfront with all its attractions.
Cincy FTW!

huff, huff, huff, <sigh>

Oh, you were serious....
but seriously, the non smoking kills it for me, and probably about 15% of the people who would go if not more.
And the Raddison here is $35 a night, so Indy's in the lead on cost.
i know of a motel in east st. louis that rents by the hour... altho the signs on the doors say "no [censored] after 1am" and 10 mins down the road is pops.. my home away from home bar thats open 24 hours... even on christmas...
Deffinately an awesome idea, EX! Of course you do know that Necronomicon is coming to Tampa this October 5-7 which is also my b-day (the 7th). Hint Hint. Wink Wink. Work with me here!
