Calling All Guides! Calling All Guides!

Hey Red...just a sidenote. I just printed off your guide while at work. Super job on that. You and Sandolphan really have helped out a lot with those binds and Macro's. Much appreciated.

Hah, nothing like a kick in the pants from the community managers themselves to get me to finish my fragging guide. Most of it is written anyway, I've just been dragging my feet on writing out the more in-depth portions. Robots/Poison guide coming real soon, promise!

Gee, I update mine every new issue without having to be told. Then I post it in the Guides Forum. Then I post a link in the appropriate forum's Guide thread. Then that thread doesn't get updated for two issues.

Why don't you update your Guides, Lighthouse. We've been updating ours anyway.

[/ QUOTE ]

Not everyone does.

And I think this would be his way of saying that he is about to update the Guide Guide. I don't blame him for not wanting to jump in and do it - Cuppa was the last one to do it, I think, which means there are a LOT of "weeds' to trim, so to speak.

[/ QUOTE ]

Point of fact, Cuppa wasn't the last one to do it. Not really. What Cuppa did was ask for volunteers to do it for her. Not that I blame her. It is an extremely long and tedious process. I did The Guide to Guides, Tanks, Brutes, Masterminds, and maybe Stalkers. She asked me to do Blasters too, but I was burnt out. Doing the main Guides sucks.

If so, now is the time to revisit it and spiff it up!

Well, you see, that's just the thing. Once we write a guide we have about a day to spiff it up at most, then it's written in stone forever. As the game changes, you have to keep re-posting your guide with updates. Honestly, I find it's a lot easier to just put my guide on the web (where I have a lot more formatting options anyway).

How's about if I put my guide on the web, make a topic to discuss that guide in the Guides forum, then get that link listed? Would that work out?

I'm almost done with my guide .

My SR Scrapper / Stalker guide is still up-to-date. Every time there are any significant changes to any of the powers I do a total re-write but in the mean time I answer questions. See sig for link.

Er, speaking as one of the last two people to update the Defender Forum's Guide to the Guides, don't you just ask for volunteers to write up the post and e-mail it in?

It's great to tell us you're getting around to that hefty task after several months, but "One of the initiatives the Community Team will be tackling" is a bit heavy-handed phrasing.

Can we have a deadline on this? I'll be computer-free during the holiday, and I'dlike to know if there is even a point in trying. Could perhaps be done abouth the 5th of January.

I'm working on updating the guides I've written for minor tweaks and I8 notes, but am wondering why many of the actual guide LISTS are out of date! Many good guides are either not linked to in the Guide to Guides section or their own sub-section, or have an outdated guide linked to when an updated version has been made by the creator and posted!

Good point, I'm hoping that's what this call is for.

*notes most of the guides I tackle aren't "how to play" guides, but stuff like backstory - though I do have aPVE'ers guide to surviving PVP zones in here... somewhere.*

Well, I wrote that Fire/Storm troller guide (in my sig) just a day or two before I8 went live. A few alterations have to be made now though due to the post I8 troller ner--er, changes.

oops, forgot to mention that I updated mine too

It says I7 on the title, but I've made the one change needed for I8 in about two lines of dialogue in a post within it. Enjoy.

Added a guide for Ice/Storm, it's fairly non-issue specific, but the little bit of APP info I have is in line with issue 8.

Have you written, or thought about writing, a Game Play Guide? If so, now is the time to revisit it and spiff it up! Or, get writing and put your game play wisdom down in black and white!

One of the initiatives the Community Team will be tackling is to update the many guide posts on our forums. These guides are an excellent resource for our community and we want to keep them current and up to date.

So, make it your new year's resolution! Forget the gym and write or update your guide today!

Huh?

Let me repeat... Huh?

Who is this "Community Team"? And how is it *you* are going to update *our* guides? Are you going to correct them, change them, update them yourselves?

Or... just hound us to do it?

NCSoft/Cryptic can't even put out a competent game manual. As much as we (mostly I) begged for you to put the text up on the web ahead of time so we can proofread and correct it. You didn't. What comes in the game box is incomplete and often wrong. Your game manuals are a 3 on a scale of 10.

Other information, like how demorecord works, how macros/binds are parsed, the hard numbers of powers... you won't release. At least not at once and comprehensively. We have to hound the devs in PMs for information you should have made available all along. It was the hard work of players who figured most of this out and published it.

Now that Statesman is no longer micromanaging things (and completely reversed his philosophy of keeping us in the dark with the numbers by taking a paycheck to put together Prima's I7 guide), the devs are more forthcoming with real numbers and info... but it's not enough.

Because NCSoft gives us so little resources on their own game websites, it is the players who've put together the best sources of information on the game. I go to vidiotmaps, badge-hound, nofuture, paragonwiki for information on the game. NCSoft's CoH and CoV website is a joke for information. Let's take an example: On the CoH website was an attempt to list all the emotes for us. Compare that to what Mantid did. Mantid gets a 9. NCSoft employee gets a 3.

If you really, really are serious about organizing guides and information, Lighthouse. Then NCSoft needs to have their own version of Paragonwiki that will serve as the online game manual. And you need to get the Cryptic people to look over the info and correct it and fill in the blanks so we know it's the real deal and not a player's best guess.

Otherwise, just organize the Guide to Guides for us and let it go.

Powerset Selection Guide mk III by Starfox.

It makes a huge pretention, in that it is an all-in-one guide to all archetyes and powersets, hero and villain side. Of course, it doesn't go into detail.

Extensive updates, as I have now actually played most of the City of Villains sets and archetypes I was only guessig about before.

We are not re-writing player guides. We are updating the posts that link to them since they haven't been updated since, oh around Issue 6! Sorry for any confusion.

What would really help would be the ability to edit your guide, regardless of age, instead of just posting replies to it. If that could be made possible for that forum only it would be very cool.

This is a good idea because the guides need to be updated to reflect changes and the discovery of new information as it becomes available.

True, True.

Inevitablely, changes occur, and the guides need an update. Posting a whole nother guide to update an old guide just adds to the clutter. Then you have multiple versions of the same guides floating around.
