Official Thread: Performance Issues
I cant stay on CoX for more than a few minutes without my computer freezing up.
Well I certainly had an interesting experience tonight.
I was playing in faultline, on a team of varying size. My FPS was pretty much normal, ~60. I did maybe 2 missions, and when I came out of the second mission back into faultline my FPS was suddenly in the 20s. I asked around and everyone else on the team was experiencing the same problems.
And my FPS pretty much stayed this way for the rest of the night -- outdoors, indoors, it didn't matter. We wound up getting a TA troller and man oh man did his arrows put a serious hurt on framerates. We were getting all sorts of lag and had numerous deaths due to not being able to act while the baddies kept attacking us. So not cool.
After I had enough I left Faultline and headed to Talos to sell/buy/train. Even after I left Faultline my FPS didn't return to normal (it jumped up to about 25). I even logged off that toon and logged in another, and my FPS still stayed at 25.
At this point I completely quit the game and restarted, logging in my toon in Talos. Finally everything was back to normal.
Now what the hell could be going on in Faultline that would crap out my FPS so badly that nothing short of a restart would fix it?? This is just unacceptable. I can deal with a lot of lag/rubberbanding/performance issues and let it slide, but this was utterly unacceptable. Has to be, without a doubt, the worst experience I've had in CoX since I started playing.
I don't know what has to happen to get this straightened out, but it needs to be fast. Real fast.
I am on my umpteenth freeze and reload - all since i8 it is making the game unplayable.
today's performance was horrid! I usually play on teams of 8 with my SGmates and this evening was nauseating (litterally) with the stop-motion inside instances as well as outdoors. This did not change even after we reduced team size and bumped down the graphics settings. There was little to no lag spikes on the Netgraph and my packets were ~200.
My specs are in my sig ( ihave the NVidia 93.71 drivers.) I usually operate at 30-40 fps, with drops to the lower end in zones like Steel canyon et al, but tonight my fps was routinely under 10
I've been playing the i8 update several nights this week and only noticed the problem today (versus normal server load lag.)
Seriously, we quit playing because it was giving several of us headaches and making me motion sick! I even /unload_gfx several times every mission, but NO HELP!
Hope they nail this one down soon
really bad after my post crashed three more times as well as other complaining...not DC'ed game crashes.
<QR>
While testing I8 on training room and since its gone live I have been having an issue with my computer auto-rebooting at least once per day <twice today actually> This ONLY happens while playin in City, other games and web surfing have not caused this problem.
When I tried to post a question at the PlayNC website regarding this issue I was unable to finish the posting because the system continuously required me to enter my email address, which I did several times. Each time I would enter my email address and re-enter the required fields which also reset after each attempt.
The amazing part is that this issue is ONLY on my brand new machine that is just over a month old. My VERY old AMD 1.05 Ghz machine with 2 gigs of RAM has NO issues. But my AMD 3200 with 2 gigs of RAM does the reboot thing at least once a day since I8 has gone live.
....just sayin
Because of the lag caused by powers (even just AM on a team of eight brought my display down from 30fps to 10fps) I had to turn my character detail down to 75% to get back to normal, non-jerky motion.

Just chiming in. I have noticed the frame rate problem. I got curious, and for grins I went and did some tests, for which I put a little Excel chart together for, along with screen shots showing base and end results.
Excel File (Recommend you *RIGHT CLICK AND SAVE*, then run local. Use at your own risk, ymmv, [censored], omg, lol.)
This shows two locations, different times of day for location 1, and the results are interesting, at least to me...
Location 1:
Base location 1, no GUI
Location 1, Menu only.
Location1, All on.
Location 2:
Location 2 Base, No GUI
Location 2, Menu only.
Location 2, All on.
What does all this mean? I dunno. I just found it interesting and thought I'd share it.
The first observation is the boxes do impact HUGE amounts of FPS in the system. The 3 level tray hits big, as does the map and the chat box.
It's just the first set, but I thought I'd report it.
Amazing to me that the addition of static boxes to the display (albiet changeable in size and location) can, in the case of my normal needs, can cost a whopping 40-60% of my FPS, and I haven't even got a big mob or lots of powers going...
Something is *seriously* broken, and I think it's more than power animations...
Please to find out for yourselves. I'm going back to detail each box's costs seperately. Same locations. See y'all later.
August 31, 2012. A Day that will Live in Infamy. Or Information. Possibly Influence. Well, Inf, anyway. Thank you, Paragon Studios, for what you did, and the enjoyment and camaraderie you brought.
This is houtex, aka Mike, signing off the forums. G'night all. - 10/26/2012
Well... perhaps I was premature about that whole 'signing off' thing... - 11-9-2012
I have noticed that after leaving zones like The Hive after a raid or the Warburg my frame rate would not improve, it would be stuck at around 15 fps, and play would be very jerky.
I would enter my base, which always would improve my frame rate, and there would be no improvement. The rate would be stuck at around 15 fps.
Only after logging out of the game and back in would my frame rates improve.
Typical frame rates for me prior to I8 would be
(All rates taken while solo)
Outside 15 - 25 fps
In Mission 30 - 45 fps
In base 50 - 60 fps

Wow, I gotta admit that was pretty interesting indeed. Great job! Though it would have been much more informative had you done this prior to I8 being released. Without that data there's no way to make an accurate comparison.
I do wonder if you would get different results if you ran the game in fullscreen rather than windowed mode.
I also took great interest in seeing how much things changed depending upon the time of day. I think it exemplifies how much server load can affect the game's performance above and beyond our rigs and/or graphics settings.
Since the UI overlays are all 2D I wonder how much is gained or lost by enabling the optimization settings in the nVidia control panel. Odd as it may sound, I actually found I got faster performance and loading if I set my graphics on quality with all the optimizations off than I did on high performance and optimizations on. You might also want to set force mipmaps to none.
I didn't read the whole thread to this point and I'm sure these problems are being repeated. But I'll post anyway to give my specs:
Athlon 64 4000+, 1gig, ATI X1900XTX (catalyst 6.11)
low water, no bloom, no distance effects.
4xFSAA, 4xAF, forced in the driver control panel.
1. CoV Office mission, 30-40fps with no action, which I'd say is the usual performance I'd been seeing since before I8. On an 8-man team, the fps would drop into the single digits (as far down as 4.8 or so) intermittently during combat then return to the 30-40 range afterwards. That's new. Performance always dropped in big battles, but now it doesn't take much and the effect is even worse.
2. Leaving a door mission once last night in GV my fps was suddenly 15ish instead of the usual 25ish around GV. It stayed that way into the next door mission (another office map). With no activity it was sitting at 10-15fps. After logging out, restarting the client, and rejoining the team, it was back up to 30-40 range indoors.
3. Had one crash to desktop shortly after leaving a sewer door mission in GV. I was just standing there motionless typing a few things in team chat and it crashed. Prior to I8 the only crashes I would experience were when fighting the self-rezzing Awakened enemies.
I have been unable to affect the slowdown problem much by fiddling with settings. A few fps here or there, yes, but the drastic slowdown in combat still happens even if I turn particle physics off and particles down to 100. Also doesn't show much improvement turning the sound sliders all the way down.

This mimics exactly what I saw last night. Leave a mission, FPS drops to 1/2 or 1/3 of what it should be and never comes back up till you quit the game compltely and reload. No amount of fiddling with settings makes any appreciable difference.
This is a completely new phenomenon, something I've never seen nor heard of prior to I8. Wonderful
Yeah, I wish I had done it prior too. Shoulda thought of this on I7. :P
BTW, the location information for my tests:
Perigrine Island Map
(671.8 -240 -5195.9) - Location 1, All Alone in the Sea.
(49.5 -8.8 -8646.5) - Location 2, On the lil' rock at the craggly tree.
As promised, here's the individual box FPS losses:
Excel file, individual box FPS losses. (recommend you RIGHT CLICK and SAVE, and run local)
And I added my machine specs on both Excel files
It seems that these are horribly broken in some way... or point to a severe graphics engine overall brokenness.
Also, a note that has been added to my first Excel file: The drop in FPS due to more people being on is pretty big. 12% is not insignificant.
This indicates a few of possibles (if not inclusive):
Obviously I'm being sent information about players *I CAN'T SEE!* That's an optimization issue.
It may also be that there is a server side issue, trying to handle the increase in clients, which causes a few more milliseconds delay in sending me information.
And it may also be that the number of people using the internet duing these times of days, and what they're using the internet for, is so very much dfferent it causes me delays in getting my information from the server.
There isn't much else that it could be...is there?
The boxes graphical delays are obviously client side.
Heck, I get a 2 FPS drop just by having something targeted in my Location 2 tests! It's not noted in the data, but noted when I did the target box. Had to turn off the targeting when testing, so I just got the box in question.
I don't remember if I did that for the earlier tests. So there may be another 2 FPS that's missing... Oh well.
Anyway. If that's what we're getting for the GUI... There may be no hope with the current engine without rewriting it... I just don't get it. Way too much time being spent drawing relatively static information...

The new "splat" effects added to the health/end/damage crystals in the Oranbega maps are causing some very irritating framerate drops. The strange part is that they hurt performance on the entire map, even though they're only in a few of the rooms. Since the devs apparently are unable to properly handle these effects, I'd rather them just be removed from the game entirely until they decide they want to bother testing them first. My irritation over this continued issue is about as high as it can be.
Also, lots of people have already mentioned it, but Orbiting Death is affecting framerate something fierce. Standing at a random spot in Brickstown, my framerate was 108fps. Turning the power on in the same spot dropped it down to 61fps. Now, of course 61fps is certainly playable, but this was standing still with nothing else going on and no other players around.
Freedom is BORKED....I have a wonderful gaming computer, and a great connection...yet when trying to go to certain areas I can't move 10feet without maperservering....and In Grandville I almost have to expect a crash between every few missions. Jus chimin in to say I hope the hotfix has a 'Resolved Client Stability issues' patch in it.

I have now crashed three times in this one mission (twice inside in two different spots on the map and once outside after calling Indigo), and I seem to be taking some of my teammates with me. I'm fighting or standing there and suddenly I get the 'We're sorry, City of Heroes has SNAFUed. Would you like to submit a report?' I didn't submit a report the first two times, but did for the last.
I'm not doing anything different in the background than normal -- HeroStats, TeamSpeak, Winamp, and a Firefox window.
I don't have an alt problem. I like trying new things.

Last night I noticed my framerate was very staggered and choppy.
I tried to figure out what exactly might be causing it, and from what I could tell it only happened when the team I was part of was in combat. I couldn't manage to narrow it down to what the exact cause was, however. We had a warshade who was running orbiting death very frequently, and I noticed a considerable dip in performance whenever he got near a vertical surface.
We also had a few energy melee tankers and energy manipulation blasters on the team, and for some reason whenever they launched a melee attack such as bone smasher or energy punch, I noticed that the game would very briefly pause as soon as the sound and graphic effect was displayed.

Ditto here, whenever I am on a team (Sometimes even solo), I am now running choppy. Before this patch, I ran smooth and NEVER had a problem.
My graphics card is a Geforce 6800 GT. Nearly 2 gigs of ram.
Having occasional (~once every 4 hours of play) crash-to-reboot while playing CoH.
i haven't noticed any pattern except that it happens. My screen locks up for a few seconds and then my computer reboots. Did not see this behaviour ever before I8 release.
Specs:
C2D E6600
2GB RAM (OCZ 667MHz)
2x(SLI) 7900GTO from BFG
Happy to post any other info as required. This is a mild irritant and I'd be glad to participate in understanding and resolving it.
i have been having problems CoH suddenly popping up a window stating "City of Heroes has encountered a problem, and needs to close" This NEVER happened to me prior i8. Today i was in Sirens call, and it happened 4 times in one hour. i was soo mad i shut my PC off and did something else! It only seems to happen at night for some reason. My spec's are as follows...
Intel Pentium4 3GHz
1Gig DDR
120 Gig hard drive
GeForce FX 5700 256MEG AGP Vidio card
56k Modem
Other than that i don't know what else i need to add to the list. But suffice to say, prior to i8 i have NEVER, EVER had this much LAGG, BOUNCEBACK, and any sort of "encountered a problem in CoH and needs to close" it's almost to the point were i can't even team anymore!!
I just noticed an issue with CoV crashing and causing my computer to reboot. This was after I first signed in and it was loading Mercy Island. This has never happened prior to Issue 8.
Here are the specs of my computer:
Windows XP Media Center Edition, Service Pack 2
Intel Pentium 4, 3.00 GHz processor
1 GB of RAM (2.79 GHz)
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 video card, driver version 7.7.7.9
Um, nVidia drivers are at 9x.xx. Dunno what that 7.7.7.9 thing is. But if that's your version... maybe a new update on the driver is in order.
However, if it's a Dell or HP or some such... well, that would explain it. I guess. In which case, buyer beware on the drivers...

i have had lag before, but since i8 it seems i crash on average 4 times a day when i play now. i updated all my drivers and at last check my pc is beyond the recommended settings for the game.
oops!! forgot my question :P
is this just becuase of a new issue (although i have been playing for almost 2 years and have never had this problem so much)?

Quicksand still "splats" and halves my performance. I have all the newest drivers, which I downloaded from the ATI site when I8 went up on Training Room. The usage of many Kheld powers hammers performance as well.
Last night we were doing many Portal missions in Peregrine IsIand. In PI itself performance was normal, typically 20-30 fps. After exiting the last mission, however, the framerate plummeted to 5 fps in PI. This was in the portal room, with no one present except our team. Poor performance continued all the way to the base portal. Once in the base the framerate returned to normal. This was on Pinnacle about 10:20 CST, 30 November.

I've noticed that splatting and/or framerate killing powers only need to be active in the vincinity of you, even if you can't see them. For example, when Force Fields had their splatting issues I could be running mine inside ICON in Steel Canyon and it would affect the performance of people outside of ICON on the street. They couldn't see me or the bubble, but they sure felt the effects.
