Official Thread: Performance Issues
Can VSync be disabled on an LCD? I got the impression from the previous poster that this wasn't wise.

You CAN disable Vsync. You may or may not like it without it on. It won't hurt anything to try running without it. You can always turn it back on.
Vsync prevents "tearing". This effect is more noticeable to some than others. Some never ever notice it at all. Me, the slightest hint of it bugs me batty. It is most noticeable indoors (where framerate is higher).
Try it both ways. If you don't notice the difference, leave it off.
MY problems are many
1. RSFs during 1 rsf any1 who had star DCed all 8 of us DCed 3-5 times and a normal 45-1hr run took 3 hours.
2. sound loop dc, since i8 i get 4x as many.
3. zoning DC, same as above
4, RV, i just DC alot
5. Loop Dcing, in order to break to loop i have to
- reset
-log a different account and toon
- log back to the original acount and toon and then he'll log back in MOST OF THE TIME.
Over all most of my issues are Cov releated, not near as many on coh and overall my dc rates since i8 as gone up by 10x. Its not my connection cause ill dc while my wife can play on, its not computer cause we got 2 totaly different puters and it happens on both.
PLs dont worry about Vet reward pets that do nothing for us or extra badges and anything else but rather fix the current issues and normal everyfay game play
There has been three times so far where during regular play that something strange has happened. Once was shortly after I8 and twice was yesterday. During play all the npcs, and in the case of the first occurance, automobiles all disappeared, soon followed by pcs. I could still see pc chat in the chat window but couldn't see anybody, npc or pc. Also while this is occuring I am unable to zone into missions, pocket D, or other zones by checkpoints, tunnels, trams, or ferries. It doesn't seem to be a lag issue since clicking on powers still activate the powers without the usual gap between clicking and power activation and I can only resolve it by logging off and rebooting my computer before logging back in. Logging out and then right back in worked yesterday but it wasn't long until it happened again. Logging and rebooting let me play without another occurance the rest of the night. Also during yesterday's occurance, I checked my map and by putting the arrow over my mission entrance so the markers spread out, my mission entrance was shown twice, almost like I was in a second instance of the zone or something.
Known issue. What happens is you see what you saw, and everyone else sees you about 6 ft. from where you think you are, hence your inability to interact with anything. Basically the client somehow gets out of sync with the servers. How on Earth than can happen just boggles the programmer in me, but there ya have it. *shrug*
Right now the only solution is to log-out and back-in.
Somewhere in another thread someone posted screenies of what they saw versus what their friends were seeing. Was wierd. I had it happen once Villain-side.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, and I have /bugged it. But I've noticed that 99% of the time after exiting an outdoor map is when I notice a significant drop in framerate. Going to the login screen doesn't fix it, you have to completely exit the game to correct the problem.
When I look at the netgraph for before and after the problem occurs, there is a very noticable difference. The before, as someone on the forums mentioned "looks like a well trimmed lawn." The after quite literally looks like _|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_|_
*looks around for any sort of Dev response since the first post*
Hmm I may be blind, but has anything been said about the crashing issues? I can't even pin a cause down still because the frequency of them around other players is ridiculous.
I've been experiencing bad lag issues since I8. Frame rates are erratic, ranging from 30 to 1.5. Solo missions run ok, with frame rates from 8 to 15 on average. Team play gets pretty choppy. I've dropped my graphics settings down to medium and low on most settings. I'm running an nVidia geForce 6200 256MB graphics card on AMD Athlon XP 2700+ processor with 1.0 GB of RAM. I'd noticed some lag in large teams before I8, but things have gotten ridiculous since.
I hope this helps.

I just got off of a system close to yours. I've never been above 20fps since I6 hit. I'm afraid that what is listed as the minimum system requirements for CoV and CoH are a bad joke in poor taste.
The only way around the problem so far, near as I can tell, is brute force. This game is now only truly enjoyable by powergamers with deep wallets. Even then, I know few people even with the latest, most expensive, high-end gear who can play with all the game settings at maximum and on.
Advice:
RAM: 1 GB minimum. This helps load times and delays when memory leak bugs take hold. 512 is barely tolerable.
PROCESSOR: Sad to say, but I think if it isn't dual-core of some sort, it isn't going to cut it. This game seems really bad about taking advantage of things like SLI or off-loading to PhysX cards, so it needs a robust processor.
VIDEO: SLI has some marginal effect, but if you only play this game, you'll need a single 7x00 card minimum.
FSAA: I was told to use 4x and higher by alot of people, but using 2x I coulnd't tell the difference and got quite a few FPS increase.
I feel for ya, my AMD 3000+, 1 GB RAM, nVidia 6600 system was decent in I5, but became impossible to play in Villains with I6, and nearly intolerable on Heroes with I8. As I suspected would happen, whatever eats FPS Villain-side got moved to Heroes with I8. The memory leak bug (or bugs causing the same outward symptom) was again, like with every issue, re-released.
On my AMD system (which in reality was just a small step above yours), I couldn't push beyond 20fps outdoors and 5fps indoors, and as low as 1fps on a full team in combat.
Now with an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 1 GB Corsair Twin RAM, and two 7950 GT KO (SLI with AFP...small improvement) I can run 50+ fps outdoors Hero side, 30+ fps outdoors Villain side, 20 fps in combat Hero side, and 14 fps in combat Villain side--all at a jaw-dropping 3840x1024. (Ironically, going to 1280 x 1024 only gains about 10-15fps outdoors, 5fps in combat in most circumstances...I think what little SLI gets used helps at the HUGE resolutions). Graphics settings are medium-to-high.
I've found the best combat experiences are 20+ FPS, though as low as 15 is tolerable. Outdoors, 30+ FPS is a good target to enjoy all the eye candy and have a fluid experience, with 20 FPS being tolerable and not game-breaking.
This really should be a wake-up call to the devs. Their core users since the early days were people with average or lower-end systems (and non-PvPers...best left to another thread) and they've been drifting away from providing a good gaming experience for those people.
We all realize that needing uber-systems is the norm for online first-person shooters and non-MMORPG, and that's fine. But many of the people who make the "community" of this game are fine, decent people, good players with good tactics, and AVERAGE systems...not gaming-specific, highly specialized systems.
Please devs, consider re-examining the core code. Delay I9 for a while and take some much needed time-out to work on the basic underpinnings of the game.
Blah...rant-mode today. Guess I'm just annoyed that I just dropped $2000 on a system that at the current rate of decline, will be unplayable (for this game) by this time next year. The $2000 worked, solved the lag, but is not sustainable year-over-year, and not justifiable relative to the rest of the gaming world.

I couldn't figure out what was going on, but after days of testing, this seems to be the issue.
After zoning to a city zone from a outdoor instanced mission, my framerate drops from 50-60 to 8-16.
This is on a Core2Duo at 3Ghz, ATI X1900XT (512MB version), 4GB of RAM system. I can only imagine that the game becomes a slideshow for lower end systems...
Interestingly, I have another PC with a Athlon X2 3800+ and a nVidia 7600GS - and while the performance is much lower, the "problem" affects both PCs equally - it drops to the same 8-16FPS range.
Currently playing:

Here's my report for the performance thread:
Here's my specs:
AMD Sepmron 3100+
2GB DDR 400 RAM
eVGA Geforce 7800 GS AGP
120GB HDD 7200RPM
SB Audigy 2Z Sound card
Pre I8:
No problems whatsoever with framerates on heroes side. On full teams, there was the occasional small lag because of all the AoE effects but rarely dropped below 15fps. Usually hovered within the 20-40fps with medium settings.
After I8:
On full teams, with critters, powers, auras, etc going, framerate tanks to 2fps and grinds to a halt, bringing my gameplay to a freeze before it gasps for air again and starts up and repeats. It's really bad, even on the lowest settings possible, with everything turned off, I still get framerate tanking.
Thinking that the possibility was on my end, I ended up reformatting my desktop completely, installing WinXP Pro and all updates, including the latest DX9.0c. My video card has the up to date drivers. All that is on this computer is CoH/CoV, Thunderbird and Firefox. I use my laptop for personal stuff. No change in framerate tanks.
I'm hoping this gets a top priority once the devs come back from holiday break. It's a serious problem.

One thing in game I did was turn off the Anisotropic Filtering. Pre I8 I was running it at 8x. While trying to figure out what was killing my performance I tried turning it off and the slide show diminished. I think it has to do with a compatibility issue with the NVIDIA 93.71 driver update. When I reverted back to the NVIDIA 84.21 update I would not have the same performance issue with the Anisotropic Filtering.
How is the AGP pipe set in your BIOS? I was running a NVIDIA 6600 and found that opening it up from 128MB to 512MB did wonders. Just make sure that your system is able to handle the larger pipe. I tried setting my AGP pipe to 1GB and it locked up my system at post. I was able to reset the BIOS and get the pipe set.
Pre setting change I would run a frame rate of about 60 - 80 fps. Post change I would run about 110 - 130 fps. I would use the same corner in my base to check my frame rates with my powers off.
Before dinking with your BIOS make sure to write down your settings incase you need to reset.
I am running 2.5 GB of ram, radeon X300 128MB video card, 2.8 GHZ processor
I am constantly crashing with all settings to the lowest possible setting.
I have had nothing but problems with I8 since it came out. Prior to I8 I could run all my settings at the max and never had a problem.
I have crashed approx. 20x in the last 3 days. Most of the time I am in the middle of a fight others I am just standing at a mission door. This is getting sooooooooooooooooooo old. I know programing isn't easy but come on this is freaking stupid. How the hell do you plan on staying in business with this kind of customer service. You don't see Wal-Mart not fixing the doors when they are broke? There is not an issue of money because at $14.95 per month and god knows how many subscribers you have a freaking huge monthly surplus in profit. If its a server issue get new ones you know Dell does sell those things and I think IBM does too. You get my drift you are getting greedy and not fixing the problem. I think you should relieve everyones debt and make it up to us somehow.

Average at 15FPS running at 1024x768 with Nvidia running 4x AA and 8x AF.
Settings at reccomended otherwise.
Turned on LoD and got a full 3 FPS outside increase.
I'm not running a cheap PC and I have to say this is rather ANNOYING.
BTW, the windows install is FRESH (like yesterday fresh). Nothing is killing performance on the OS or software side.
Between I7 and I8:
AMD 2.1 Gig processor
GeForce 6600 256mb RAM
1 Gig DDR RAM
80 Gig HD
When my settings were tuned down fairly significantly I got about 50-60 FPS in missions solo, about 25-40 in missions with larger teams.
35-45 FPS outside runnin around
Post I8:
everything the same except I upgraded to 2 Gigs of RAM
Getting about 25-35 FPS solo in mission, settings turned down.
18-25 FPS in mission with large teams, and sometimes lower.
25 FPS max runnin around outside.

The "city of heroes has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. Please describe what you were doing when this problem occured" message is getting annoying. Happens A LOT in RV. It's not my computer, it cant be when entire zones get the same thing and when 6 out of 8 people have their game crash during RSF or missions.
This never happened pre i8. Just the usual lag here and there but nothing to complain about.

ADDITIONAL FEEDBACK:
I've been playing Villains a bunch over the last week, and can now provide some feedback based on the Intel Core 2 Duo and TripleHead2Go system specs from earlier in this thread.
I am getting respectable frame rates now, nothing like sheer brute force. But villain-side the performance is extremely variable, not as "steady" as hero-side.
CHANGES:
--I've actually upped the World and Character details to maximum, it helps when using /camdist 120 on a widescreen. Also clears-up some "skirt anomalies" where from a distance the female skirt looks like a wierd loincloth (the sides disappear but the v-shaped front and back stay...very odd looking).
--Forced the SLI to "AFP 2" per some forum recommendations. It seemed to make a small 5-10fps difference over "nVidia default" when using the TripleHead2Go. My current running theory is that as others have pointed out SLI isn't really supported but at ultra-resolution needs (like my effective 3840x1024) the tiny gains in performance are more noticeable.
VILLAIN PERFORMANCE:
--Outdoors I generally am getting about 40 fps, but often dips for no apparent reason into the 20-30fps range. Grandville is all over the map, from 14fps to 42fps. Flight is fairly fluid, but using Teleport is still problematic due to the brief moments of framerate drop when appearing from Teleport. This zone just needs help. ;P
--Most mission maps I can sustain 30-40fps.
--Worst case scenario...Arachnos map, full team of Lvl 50s, corrupter-heavy (lots of AoEs and special effects), set for high difficulty (huge spawns) and tanking (so my screens are just packed with effects), I can sustain 14fps, and even maintain 20-30fps, but it can still dip into 5fps for a brief time. in other words, for the most part, *playable* again.
OTHER NOTES:
--FPS rates villain-side are alot more jumpy and variable than hero-side. What can be best described as "lag spikes" where I get 5-10 seconds of ultra-low framerates are common, especially outdoors. I would write this off as map complexity except that it is the responsibility of the developers to ensure fluid transitions, or to simplify the maps enough to make them more fluid. Grandville is the ultimate PvE example of this, with any Arachnos Base a close second.
--Villain-side still induces "memory leak" symptoms more than hero-side. Even with 1 GB of RAM, after 60-90 minutes of playing any villain I need to quit and relaunch the game because framerates take a huge hit. This usually happens after exiting a mission. Hero-side I can go 3-4 hours without needing to relaunch the game. /reloadgfx has no effect on the problem.
--I pretty much run with "/showfps 1" on all the time, since it gives me an objective "here is the baseline, here is what it's dropping to" metric.
--Villains is still, overall, good for a 30-50% framerate drop over Heroes on average. Standing perfectly still Heroes caps at 60fps (due to refresh rate limitations of the TH2G) and Villains never sees more than 51fps. Once you actually do anything useful, the gap widens rapidly.
Hey Lighthouse, we haven't heard anything despite a few of us giving hard numbers and loads of specific examples. Can you give us an update, maybe some "we think we have a few ideas" kinda stuff? ETAs, even vague ones? You know, you're usual reassurance that the voices-on-high are keyed-in to the problem and acknowledge it as such?
Thanks!

Since i8, i have been having a weird bug where i can't enter a mish cause there are no doors, can't get out of the hospital, into elevators etc. There are no mobs anywhere is how i notice the bug. I end up having to relog. This never happened before i8. Sometimes i get it 1-8 times a day, sometimes not at all. It happens when i zone into or out of something, train, mish.... All started with i8.
I crash daily, I don't see a need to do a huge writeup on the multiple way's i've crashed, they are so frequent that there is no definite cause it seems.
I have a great computer, yet I crash daily. My drivers and everything is up to date, yet, I crash daily.
Annoying? Yeah jus a tad.
One I found yesterday, I normally run at around 60 fps, I have a relatively new system 2x4600, 2 Gb RAM, 7600 GTX. I was doing the 25-30 devouring earth arc hero side and the last two missions have pulsing crystals containing the will of the earth virus that spam heal the bad guys. When these spawned (ie when I got within a room or two of them, long before I could see them) framerate dropped to anywhere between 7 and 18.

So have the developers ever really acknowledged the extent of this problem, getting pretty blasted annoying. If they have upped the graphic requirements and now you need a higher end system to run the games, then tell us so we stop wasting out time. If they have glitches in the game, which is what I believe is the case, the post a bloody reply to this forum and let us know you are at least aware of the issue and are working diligently on this problem. Unfortunately, a choppy framerate is one of my pet peeves and just makes me avoid missions. I prefer grouping, but when you chug along at 2-3 fps in a heavy battle, its tremendously frustrating.
Mudder
I sent Lighthouse a PM a few days ago, nothing yet.
I too wish they had a sticky with a realistic system requirements list and expected FPS from that system so we could settle things in an objective way. I know what's on the box is a joke, at least in my experience.

Just a final post on why I wish for more communication. After I8, I went and bought a new graphics card because I was so desperate for a return to the prior experience, but imagine my surprise when I realize it makes little difference. In fact, now I am holding off on upgrading my CPU until I know if they are going to fix the problem. Why waste the money on a new CPU for marginal performance.
Mudder
To be brief: 3GHz system, 1.5 GB memory, 256 MB AGP 8x nVidia XFX GeForce 6200. Not the best, but not abysmal either. Before I8, I got rubberbanding only after zoning, and not again within the zone. Now my rubberbanding is so bad the game is UNPLAYABLE.
Example: I would fly a toon on top of a building, then cut out flight. I would immediately get rubberbanding that pulled me back over the edge of the building. My toon would then plummet to the ground; I would try to toggle flight again, but the delay in activation meant my toon would hit the ground, THEN begin flight again. This NEVER happened before I8.
I can't target reliably, and who knows when the next power will activate.
This is ridiculous. I never had the graphics options turned up real high anyway, and when I back them WAY off, I still have the same problem. I don't have ANY of these problems, or any graphics problems at all, with EverQuest and EverQuestII.
[ QUOTE ]
--FPS is limited by Refresh Rate somehow. Since I re-installed the game it defaulted to 60 and initially the FPS capped at 60fps. When I reset to 75 refresh, my FPS capped at 75fps. I couldn't test higher since my monitor doesn't support refresh rates higher than 75.
