Drawing for my son

PMD,

My son does alot of his own drawings. This was an outlet for him to see where his imagination can lead. He is more excited now thanks to this turnout then I could have hoped for.

Thanks for the encouraging words.

I don't know if you can call me a pro, but i can give you some tips.

Don't use "How to Draw" books (i never did anyway), they don't help IMHO. Just go out to a comic shop and look through some of the books, look for one (or a few) with some poses and a style you might like (perhaps your favorite artist) and take them home (pay for them, of course!) and trace the poses, faces, whatever you'd like to get better at creating. Sort of give yourself "lessons."

After you've traced a few and got a feel for the anatomy and such, try doing some work of your own. Use the books as referance material if you need to.

And, last but not least, always always ALWAYS use your imagination.

I cant say I agree with you…at all. Its very important that you learn and understand the basic structure of your subject, whether it’s an inanimate object or a dynamic super hero. In fact I’ve had no formal training and got my basic direction from “How to Draw” books. As The_PMD mentioned, I have all of the Burne Hogarth books, Christopher Hart has 2 really good ones, and I have 4 or 5 great anatomy books that I reference on a regular basis. Another good thing to do is to just draw things in life. Just go out to a park and do quick sketches of people so you can see how they move and how they actually interact with things.

Yeah I can still remember the person's art I saw that inspired me to draw. I was sitting in a laundromat when I was 7 and there was a guy drawing next to me. Lol, I asked him so many questions. I know he must have been sick and tired of me. He is still a good friend of mine today. In fact I'm gonna give him a call tonight. So that being said, this may just be the start of something wonderful for your son too.

Here's Flame colored. I really had a lot of fun with this one; think this is my best yet considering that Smart Guy was the first sketch I ever colored.

A slightly edited quote of GillsBates above, but I agree with him, theres nothing wrong with how to draw books. I even have how to draw the Marvel way...........cough......ahem, ok lets move on. In fact I have many books that deal with fantasy Sci-Fi art as well as art in general from penciling to oils. I have just started getting a new Fantasy Sci-Fi Digital art magazine "Imagine FX" which is very good for tips ,software and equipment etc( no not an advert lol). I also without a shadow of a dought study other great comic book artist. Jim Lee, Micheal Turner (two big influences) Bryan Hitch and Alex Ross, to name but a few. And off course you can't go wrong by just checking out the awesome artist we have on the boards. Gill, Psibug, Poison,Troy Hickman, David Nakayama, Veikira, Cyberlynx and last but not least Darkjedi, man that is some great talent we have around. Not to mention some of the up and coming talent out there, Davenport, Juggertha_ and Gideon_B and I know there are more out there that I misssed Anyway practice practice practice. Man Thats the longest post I have ever done.

No kidding....the only posts I usually see are "Here's so-and-so, Later CB" But then I pretty much have only seen you post in your cards thread.

Btw here's the new Shape. The notebook paper lines took like 30 mins to git rid of but it was worth it.

The group shot looks great, Roxstar. It is cool how several different artists, each with different styles, can create different characters that still look great together.

I also like the way you colored Flame. Glad you enjoyed coloring him.

Guys, I couldn't stand it I had to do this!

Awesome work people.

Very nice work Roxstar! Static's son has to be... well, ecstatic!

And I agree with the thinking that comic books and cartoons should INSPIRE you to draw but copying or tracing them as your ONLY means of learning isn't the best way to go. You need to learn the rules before you can bend or break them.

Drawing figures from a "how-to" book may not be as exciting because there are no flashy costumes, exagerrated proportions or cool gadgets and guns and stuff on them. But underneath them all should be a solidly drawn figure with proper anatomy and proportions. Also, you need to be able to draw regular things and people so that your superheroes look SUPER when they're in the same scene together.

Too bad, was looking forward to draw Flame and Spike after finishing Rowr's pic. But they look cool!

Well, you still could... after all there are two Tellys, three Strengths and two Shapes.

And Psibug, your Spike looks great!

Here is my rendition of Spark

Im not used to drawing cartoons, so its a little sketchy and detailed, may not be ideal for coloring but you can give it a try. Anyway, I hope he likes it!

Okay, did my renditions of Flame & Spike.
It's about time we got a heroine and a super pet, Spike the Super hedgehog! (although he turned out like a mix of a hedgehog and King Koopa...)

In response to gill, celtic, and cyberlynx.... That's just the way i learned to draw... I couldn't stand "how to..." books and i never really used referance material- except sometimes the comic books i find every so often. I always have and still do just draw straight from my imagination.

I guess it's not the best advice then... don't listen to me

Hehe...when I was coloring Megumiko's version of flame I was thinking about him looking like a girl. All you'd need is a little chest, I mean he looks kind of feminine to begin with. No offense Megumiko, he's still my favorite.

I love Spike btw....just awesome!

No problem, Roxstar. I felt he had a bit of a Cirque du Soliel feel to him (you know, over the top costume), but I felt it was okay because he was meant to be impish.

Poison, I love your rendition of Flame and I think your Spike is just darn cute! Hedgehogs rock!

And Gill, that looks great. I think your coloring style is cool.

Woot I'll update the wallpaper when I get home....nice job. I'm actually interested in how your coloring differs from what I did with your little sketches.
