Sweet Meet n' Greet Street Report

Rowr, you're a jerk. I read through all that.. it sounds like it was a convention, except with jsut Co* players. I wish I could have gone Stupid Michigan.. so far from SoCal/Texas, where all the cool kids ('cept me) are.. *cries*
At least Origins is near MI, so I'll get to meet some of you.. lovely.. people. (note to self: take large beating shovel) Dang.. my large rock to beat Catwhoorg over the head with won't fit in my suitcase... I'll mail it to his wife and ask her to beat him for me.
[/ QUOTE ]
Well I'm a 4-year Quakecon veteran (though I haven't gone the last two years) so i'm pretty well versed with big huge LAN/Convention type things. And yeah it did have the look and feel of a convention albeit a MUCH smaller crowd (I don't think there was 250 people there, so I bet some people took the 'SORRY LIST IS FULL' sign as a sign to just not show up. Well you people MISSED OUT!).
Butyeah total convention atmosphere. Less people dressed up (though two people with cat ears and one person with a shoulder kitty *shifty eyes*) though, but I really didn't expect too much of that.
Sorry you missed out but I'm sure there will be other events that we won't get to go to (but you can bet I'll be trying my best to go!!)

I'd so be wearing an Anti-cat costume if Cat wasn't already.

Eh.. personally I'd only peg a few locations for this sort of thing.
Any backwater hole the company resides in (apparantly this one is in texas)
Boston
Chicago
LA
Any other locations... well, they're close enough to texas, boston, chicago or california.
Zeus - god of locations, locations and locations.
[/ QUOTE ]
So Tampa it is! Yay!
They should have one in central New Jersey.
Just saying.
But knowing my luck, the closest place they'd have one is in NYC. And NYC is a hellhole.
And you know how I feel about hellholes.

Rock, rock on Hamster.
Florida, that's only a little bit away from texas, right?
only a couple states between you if I remember right... oh hell... florida and texas are right next to each other! They're only seperated by a single waterway! just take a boat!
Zeus - god of alternatives

To throw in a plug for Tampa, both Busch Gardens and Lowry have convention rooms that hold a couple thousand people as well as staff and kitchens for food and drink. I got married at Lowry. The place has got an awesome menu.
I do gotta say thought that Arctic Sun should switch his avatar back to that little cute fuzzy one of the wolf I think it was. Fits him totally!

That's why I'd figure boston instead of NYC... it's close enough, (close to NJ for that matter) and a hell of a lot more pleasant than some of the alternatives.
But I'd actually wager more that this little get together is the preamble to an actual CoH con. They needed to test the waters a bit... kind of like releasing the arena when they're really just testing the waters for CoV PvP. Everyone there was really just a guinea pig. Did they make you press on a bar everytime you saw a light flash to get your pizza? HA!
Seriously though, I do see a Coh con in the future. Perhaps it's just hope, but it would be highly cool.
Zeus - god of some hope

This comment and another one further up the thread has pushed me to comment.
Austin is not a backwater hole, and it certainly isn't hicksville, as someone called it earlier. Sure, it's not a huge [censored] city like Boston, New York, or LA by any stretch, but it's a city of roughly 550-750K in population, and it's a damn fine place to reside. Unlike the rest of Texas, which is a pretty conservative place, Austin is a very laid back, liberal, and polygot place. It also has a HUGE number of tech firms here (Dell is here, for one thing), so it's not just farms and hayseeds.
Anyway, I just had to get that off my chest. Thank you for your time.

I passes cactus farms on my way into Austin. *giggle* I've never seen a cactus farm! (Actually I asked a resident Austintonian friend about it - wasn't actually a farm, they are just very close to the edge of a desert) And from what I understand from the other meet & greet thread, Austin is very much *not* the norm for Texas as far as people and the social atmosphere
Ignorance is being untaught. Stupidity is being unwilling to learn.

I also saw News 8 Austin there, so there was gonna be live/taped coverage somewhat. Too bad I wouldn't be at home to see the clips!

I heard an ad for the spots this morning, saying something about an Austin gaming company was certain that, from what it sounded like, places like Cyberjocks are the wave of the future for online gaming. They made it sound as if the feature will be airing all day today, so I bet you'll be able to catch it tonight, too.

Miss Informed in 2016! She can't be worse than all those other guys!
Hear Hear, Solarexx.
But let'em think what they want. The cool folks know what's up.
hee!
But yeah, now that i think about it, cryptic/ncsoft does tend to do these little 'test' things on small scales to see feasability for a big scale, so yeah! Hopefully we convinced them a CoH/CoV or NCSoft-Con is a GOOD IDEA and will be WONDERFULLY RECEIVED.

Yeah... I do love living in Austin - I just wish it wasn't surrounded by Texas.
Tech support IRL, CLR/DRU/MED/WHM/PRI/DEF. Hmm, I sense a pattern...

A few of my alts
wOOt! For Meet and Greet!! We got to meet all kinds of peeps from the area. And after getting 2 Statesmen Heroclix figures outside, I smashed Statesmen under my boot, "Take that! for all the Nerfs!". All that was left was a flattened tanker :P. But i still have another here sitting on my desk. Thank you guys at NCsoft for creating a game we can love on all levels. Infinity FTW!!!
oh i forgot, Don't forget to add Werewolf tails and Werefoxes!!!!
Boston, while a good band (Tom Shultz rules!) is a bit too damn far.
Maybe Phili. While Phili is a bit of a hellhole in itself, it's a bit easier to drive in/to hellhole over NYC.

Hah. Right. Only a little bit!
Only Georgia, Louisianna, Alabama, and Mississippi separate Florida from Texas! And if one lives in Central Florida like I do (god forbid that they live in southern Florida), then most of Florida ALSO separates one from Texas! Why, we Floridians regularly drive back and forth from Texas as day trips..It's only gotta be a 17 hour drive at the very least! Easy
Oh, and that "single waterway" is called the Gulf of Mexico

When I got there I saw a couple people in Red hats (turned out to be Auto Assault hats), and said Oooh I bet one of those is CuppaJo! (Turns out none of the three I saw standing outside were but that's ok) I also saw News 8 Austin there, so there was gonna be live/taped coverage somewhat. Too bad I wouldn't be at home to see the clips!
[/ QUOTE ]
I saw the News 8 coverage this morning, and you didn't miss much. Been there, done that and all... heheh. More importantly, none of the virtue folks were in it that I noticed... :^(
[ QUOTE ]
So then we finally got tired of that, and Moggie got a phone call from their babysitter so she had to leave to take their wonderful 10 yr old daughter (who drew a sketch of me outside, woo hoo! Fan art! now if I only had a scanner... ), so me and Masaokun (i'm gonna butcher that I'm sorry) decided to go try to find us some seats.
[/ QUOTE ]
Nah, yer doin' fine. It's actually supposed to be "Masao-Kun" (which translates roughly to Mr. Correct, or even better, Mr. Right), but the handle system wouldn't take dashes. I'm considering just changing it to my eventual pirmary character, Glow Plug, and be done with it. It would make name identification much easier. But I've been using Masao-Kun on various boards and such for a while, and it's hard to let go... *sniff*
[ QUOTE ]
In my goodie bag I got a CoV T-shirt, a couple posters, a couple bumper stickers ("I'd rather be fighting villains!"), some stickers, a CoH "Bootleg Edition" cd, a Lineage 2 trial cd (it's a cute little mini-cd!), a couple packs of comics (a couple Blue King comics, and a couple Top Cow comics), all nicely bundled up. I will keep them in the wrapper and in 50 years when I pull them out of the attic I'm sure they'll be worth like, 2 bucks! Yay!!
[/ QUOTE ]
I was really hoping the comics would have included the original 1&2, since those are the only ones we don't have... I was also hoping the 'bootleg edition' key would have activated a power or costume option or something, but from googling it, it doesn't. I don't know who I'll actually be able to give it to, but still, it was free! Oh, and I love the bumper sticker! heheh
[ QUOTE ]
I had a LOT of fun meeting and talking to people, putting names to faces, and was really sad when it was over. It was fun, after we took the big Virtue picture, we were standing around just chatting as things around us were closing down. It was like the end of a Task Force! "Noooo don't call the contact! I don't wanna break team yet!" It's so amazing that what we do in game just automatically translates to real life and we were all able to just smoothly roll into it like it was nothing.
[/ QUOTE ]
It was rough having to say goodnight to everyone. I wasn't sure what to expect going in, but it was a blast, and I look forward to doing this again, but even bigger! (although we need to figure out some way to match character/forum names to RL people better, though... I have a few other ideas, but I'll post them when I have more time.
[EDIT] And this is why I'm not a huge forum poster... in the time it took for me to do this little bit, a whole 3 pages of posts got on there... You folks are scary! :^)

It would be kinda fun to get a list of all the CoX players who were there... I know I didn't even meet half of the player base who was there.

Yet, somehow, you ran into someone else I know in game...
What sane conversation brings me up anyhow?

Man, I'm originally from Indiana and I still never thought that Florida and Texas were even remotely close together. Of course, I also realized quite early on that states in the south tend to be larger and filled with tons of nothingness between bastions of civilization (example: Georgia. Never have I seen a state so full of empty. And people say we're running out of room for our population..), as opposed to states in the north/northeast, which tend towards the more compact.
